I think my hard drive is kinda fucked.

So yesterday I decided to reboot my laptop because, well, I hadn't done so in three or four days. I'd done this after some hefty file-movage (moved a 1.6gb iso from a flash drive to my desktop, and deleted a load of shit). Well, restarted, got past the Windows XP bootscreen, and after that... Blackness, and a rythmical whirr-whirr-click-click sound from the hard drive. That's not normal. Then it BSODs and reboots itself. Safe mode won't work; gives me the same result.

I've had this problem in the past - Roughly a month ago, in fact. Except that was the result of a hard shutdown; I got bad sectors from just turning it off when it was taking upwards of three minutes to shut itself down. It was kinda worse when it happened then; the XP loading screen wouldn't even finish and the BSOD was only visible for a tiny fraction of a second before it rebooted itself.

Now, here's how I fixed the problem last time: I took it to some of the IT people at my school's computer lab, and they helped me run a disc check with a preinstalled environment package called "BartPE". I've looked this up myself, and it seems to be what I need, but here's the problem: I have no fucking clue how to use it. Burn as an iso, bootdisc, yadda yadda yadda, but where's the "clear bad sectors without wiping the data from my hdd" option? I've also encountered a BartPE variant called Reatogo, but I'm just as in the dark over that one.

Any help as to getting my computer to boot up again / recovering all my data in the process would be VASTLY appreciated. Thanks.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

...I did it myself. Again.

Note to anyone who might be having this problem: Find an ISO of an XP recovery console, and run chkdsk. Fixed.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
