Advise on a gaming system
Hi everyone I'm new to this board and first off just wanted to say hello to everyone.
Secondly I was lookng for a gaming system and was thinking of geting either a PS3, Wii, or a xbox 360 and was wondering of the 3 which would be the wisest decision.. I kind of like the Wii's controlling aspect and interaction of game play, but I like the PS3's HD dvd and graphics portion, and x box because its cheaper then PS3 with more games currently and you can add on the HD DVD portion to it.. So therefor I'm a bit torn...lol... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Hi. I've moved your thread to a more appropriate section. You placed it in a forum that specifically exists for the discussion of video game music.
Ideally, this is a topic for a Journal entry (your Journal can be found HERE), but as you're new, I'll let it slide this one time. However, if this thread becomes a retarded debate amongst fanboys, I'll just close it right down. It's a request for advice, not an excuse to wave your banner and insult anyone who disagrees. (Not directed at you, mp123) There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
First off, HDDVD (on X360) and Bluray (on PS3) are only something you should worry about if you already have an HDTV. If you don't have an HDTV, then using these as a HD disc playback is the least of your concerns. If you do, then you really need to think about whether you want to use Bluray, or HDDVD, and also be willing to pay for the movies ($25-$40 a movie).
Putting HD disc movies aside, what kind of games do you like to play? Do you like single-player games, online games, RPGs, FPSs, racing games, strategy, quick pick-up and play games? Your play habits and preferences will kind of lead you to a system, so we need to hear those before we can make great recommendations. If I had to give blind advice, I would say the X360 is your ticket. You sound interested in HD movies, and X360 will give you that option later, and you can get one now without breaking the bank. You didn't use an anime/FF avatar, so I'm assuming you aren't a HUGE japanese-games fanatic, in which case X360 is gonna be your system of preference. You also mentioned graphics, so this seems to be an area that you are interested in, so the Wii might not be the best for you. I hate recommending Microsoft products, but the X360 is probably your best choice. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ~ Ready To Strike ~ :Currently Playing: League Of Legends(PC), Skyrim(PC), Golden Sun: Lost Age(GBA), Twilight Princess(Wii), Portal2(PC), Dragon Warrior II(NES), Metroid Prime 2: Echoes(GC)

Wii + PS2 and you're set for a very long time, not to mention you'll save money, so you can start buying games to play until late next year. The latter of the two has more than enough great titles to keep you busy, while the former has one already. Edit: I also forgot to mention, if you're interested in high definition video playback and HDTVs in general, it will help if you wait. Television prices drop, performance improves, HD libraries expand, etc... I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even.

For game choices I would have to say I prefer single player shooting games, RPG games and the wife love the cartoonish games.
I know the whole blue ray/ HD DVD are still in the process of being decided on and thats ok with me and probably th eonly thing from staying slightly away from the PS3 becayse at lease with the X BOX its only 199 in canada for a HD DVD unit. To be honst I like the Wi's interactive part as you actaully play the game and not just control it but graphics arent the same and the game look a bit old school and then X BOX has the HD add on but it is pricier, graphics are better but no interaction like the wii and obviosuly tons more games... if I had the cash I'de just go out and pick both up I guess thats where my dilema is ...lol... - I've currently got a 50" HDTV that I purchased a few months back. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Edit: Nice edit. What do you rank higher? Gaming or HD movies/shows? What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |

metal sphere - is PS still going to come out with games for its PS3 or will all the new games only be for the PS3 because I was looking at the elder scrolls oblivion and it doesnt lok like its going to be on PS2 and just PS3 ...

Of course, as the newest console in that family of consoles, it'll get all the next gen titles. I recommend you don't get one now, unless you believe Oblivion (one game) is worth $500. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
Perhaps, if that game is your favorite game, you might consider it for PC, and then get a Wii. That will give you the best of both worlds...so to speak.

I'd switch Wii to PS2 though. The former needs more titles, just like the rest of its next gen console brethren. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
If you have a 50" HDTV you come off quite wealthy. I'd say PS3, even though I'd recommend a Wii if you want to get the family involved. Oblivion's coming to the PS3, or so I heard, which is great. Nintendo isn't catering for HDTV but it's more of a gameplay console. If you're short on cash I'd say a 360. PS3 is you want to go all out with high def. It doesn't sound like you want the Wii but more high def gaming, so that's pretty much out of the picture. Either way, just try them out at kiosks and get a feel of what you'll be playing at home. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
1. FPS games... Most fps games are best on PC, and next best on X360. Not only that, it is not unlikely that Halo 3 will be quite a marvelous game (for those that get into Halo). Though many FPS games will be on also PS3, the difference between them will be miniscule. X360 has the best FPS games now, with great HD graphics, and will have at least one huge FPS exclusive. Though Resistance is exclusive (for now) its really not the big a deal as far as FPSs go. 2. RPG... Though not the console that will be receiving Final Fantasy or other SqEnix games, X360 has Oblivion right now and that game alone will last you many, many, many hours. And it's a good one. X360 will lack Japanese RPGs, but not American ones (like Oblivion), so if you won't miss those RPGs, then X360 will satisfy your RPG bug. 3. HDDVD Add on... You don't have to buy the HDDVD addon. That's why the PS3 is not a great bargain because you will pay high dollar for a Bluray device that you don't necessarily want. With the X360, you get the choice and you can choose later. They don't shove it down your throat, but give it as an option which means you don't waste money. An X360 would not be a bad option for you. But that really depends how much the next point means to you. The Wii is the best choice for the both of you. For the wife playing cartoonish games... The Wii cannot be recommend enough for multiplayer and gameplay and cartoonish. If you want to enjoy pick-up games with your wife, and enjoy a good solid gaming of your own on the side, the Wii might be a better choice. You will not get your HD graphics. Just realize that. But you do get great interactivity, and there will be (is) games for you to enjoy. Call of Duty 3, Metroid Prime 3 (soon), and even Red Steel are solid shooters that you can enjoy. RPGs will be sparse at first (no Oblivion ever ![]() All told, if you have the cash, Wii60 is the way to go. If it's too much money, go WiiPS2 and enjoy the PS2s HUGE catalog of awesome games and the Wii's gameplay. Either way you won't be disappointed. And if you care about your wife enjoying the games as well, just make sure you pick up a Wii. If you end up with a 360, buy Viva Pinata.
It's the most cartoonish game this year, and I'm sure your wife would enjoy playing it as well. I was speaking idiomatically. |

thanks so much for all the advice thus far... As for the PC option, it had crossed my mind a few months ago however when I looked into what I would need to start gaming on my PC propertly it would cost me more then I want to spend to just play a few games so not really worth it unless I end up rebuilding my whole PC in the future.
This might sound like a stupid question but how long do you think sony will continue to make new games for PS2 before they stop and only make them for PS3. I guess my desiction would be easy if sony continues to make new games for the next year or so for there PS2 as well then I'll go with a wii until someone wins the format war (hd DVD or Blue ray) and then I'll go with either X360 or PS3. How ya doing, buddy? |

Well, they didn't stop making PS1 games until late last year or early this year, if I'm not mistaken, so I think it's safe to say they'll keep making PS2 games. Unlike Microsoft completely abandoning their Xbox.
Fuck PS3 though. At least until they get most of the problems fixed and lower the price a couple hundred dollars. You can check out the PS3 discussion thread if you want to see my main problems with it. The Wii is a great system, although most of its games are pretty gimmicky right now. Zelda's definitely awesome and your wife would probably like Rayman or Super Monkey Ball if she's into cartoony games. The upcoming Elebits looks to be pretty fun as well. I think I'll wait for the x360 or the PS 3 then. If I can still get most games for my PS2 for even 1 year then I'm still happy with it and I can pick up the wii since I'm so impressed with the interactive aspect behind the console and then in a year or so when the technology gets a bit stronger and prices come down on both the PS3 and the X 360 as well as hopefully a winning format for HD DVDs AND more movies both on the shelf and in the rental stores I'll pick one of the 2 up next year then.
Thanks everyone !! Most amazing jew boots |
Good decision. The Wii is kind of a no brainer in some ways, and with your PS2, you'll have more than enough to keep you occupied and happily gaming.
