Bad Memories associated with Games?
Broke up with a loved one while you bought MGS2? Did you have a nasty fight with someone while you were just enjoying Sonic 3? When you play that same game years later, do you still recall what unfornate event happened when you first played it?
Talk about it in this thread. In my case, it would be Castlevania III for the NES. The same day I purchased it, I got hit with a nasty fever. Despite my claims, my dad egged me on to attend the Little League game that same day. I felt crappy as I waited for my turn to take the bat, but I tried to endure. I managed to get a good hit that got me to first and one of my teammates to score. The crowd cheered, but as soon as I stepped on that plate, I ran a few extra feet and puked in the grass. :/ The fever lasted a good week, with the occasional hurling in my toilet. So to this day, I still get a small queezy feeling in my stomach whenever I replay the game. Pretty unfortunate since it was probably the best of the three NES games. A recent addition would have to be FFXII, sadly. I waited a long time for the game, but by the time it came out I got hit with a rather continous streak of stress and bad luck. It involved a problem with one TV, and 3 additional months of juggling around a couple more TVs, along with some electrical problems that overall have kept me from truly enjoying the game. As of this writing I'm still barely halfway done, but now I feel that most of my problems are gone, so there shouldn't be any further delays. But the last few months have really sucked for me. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
Mostly with my Dance Dance Revolution Extra Mix... I let a friend of mine borrow it for ONE night so he could play it. Back then, he was still a hardcore DDR fan, but when I come to pick it up the next day, the CD was fucking cracked. It was a pretty deep cut also affecting some of the songs in-game.
I trusted that bastard with one of my most cherished DDR games, and the bastard fucking cracked it when he slipped on his stairs. What's worse? It was carpeted. THICKLY. :| I still hate him for doing that, and the dude I let borrow the game eventually became a drugee. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Should've forced him to pay you back for the disc. :/
That reminds me of another unforunate moment; my missing Super Mario 2 cart. One day, less than a month after receiving the game as a present, my cart just vanished one day. We tore the house inside and out but could never find it. I also interrogated a few of my friends too, who denied up and down that they took it (even though a couple of them weren't exactly upstanding kids. What's worse, I lost contact with them shortly after). I never found out what happened to it, and I never owned another copy of the game until Super Mario Allstars. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I played Sonic the Hedgehog 3 combined with Sonic and Knuckles when I had chickenpox. Great timing, yeah? Managed to to collect all the emeralds and make it to Doomsday zone (was it?) during that time. Of course dealing with the itching made it somewhat of a terrifying experience which I'll never forget.

Did you try HD Loader? That, along with a hard drive, a PC, and the right torrent sites and you'd be all set.

La Pucelle springs to mind for me. I was under a lot of stress around the time that I bought it, and as much fun as it was I never could get into it. When I got to the beginning of the second chapter progress just came a complete halt. Every time I tried to do the first section of chapter two something would happen to completely distract my attention or pull me away from the game completely, and I just got tired of it. Two years later I'm still in the same spot. It's at around the #4 spot on my list of games I need to get back to.
Gradius for the Game Boy was one of those cases of friend issues. I loaned it to my best friend at the time, and he promptly lost it. Not wanting to pay for a new copy, which would have been hard enough to find by then, he kept skirting the issue when I asked for it back. Then he stalled for time to search more, even though he was pretty certain that it was either lost for good or his dog had eaten it. The day before he was finally going to give me the money his mother found the cartridge under the guest room bed, undamaged. It was a relief, but it didn't help the weeks of frustration. Oh, and this one isn't about me, but a friend of mine held a massive grudge against another kid for deleting Super Mario World save data. He and his older brother, who moved away soon after, had gone through nearly the entire game together before this other guy accidentally deleted the file. That was back in elementary school, and my friend made his life hell in whatever way he could all the way through high school. During his senior year he bought a used SNES and dug out Super Mario World only to discover that apparently he and his brother had worked through most of the game again after the original file was deleted, but for some reason he couldn't remember that at all. Ouch. Brings up another memory. I cut my hand up pretty badly a few days after I got Xenogears. It wasn't bad enough to keep me from playing, but the doctor had to stick a syringe right in the wound to numb it up. The pain was unbearable.
Although I don't recall this whenever I replay XG, so it wasn't a bad enough experience. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Back when I was living in Ottawa, I got really sick that kept me home for over a week. It was that bad. Anyway, my parents, who were managing a video store at the time, let me play one of the SNES rental units to help pass the time. Yeah, awesome, except I was so sick that even moving made me nauseous. I wasn't in any condition to actually play anything, although I...tried.
Other than that, the only other bad memories I got from games was when I accidently deleted my SSBM save file, and when I felt like tossing my PS2 out the window, no thanks to Dodger Chocobo >_> How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Hmm, bad memories. I remember my mom reserved a copy of Turok for me back in 1996 or so and I couldn't wait I was so excited and when it was time for to go pick it up she refused to give me the rest of the value (we had put down half) and I never got to and never have played that game since. =/

Breath of Fire III has an annoying memory attached to it every once in a while which involves my bratty cousin. I brought my PS1 to the Phillippines several years ago. I swear my young cousin was the rudest child I had ever met and my aunt and uncle were always having trouble with him. He would throw tantrums especially and then somehow we had to switch turns in playing games. I popped in Breath of Fire III and when he said "you played too long, my turn my turn!" I just left Breath of Fire III in as the game and hid the fact that I brought any other games. He got tired and whiny after kicking things for a while (in-game) and complained about how I was cheater because he didn't know where to go, while I laughed to myself and also thought of how bratty he was and still is.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Final Fantasy Origins brings a few negative memories for me. I remember playing FFII while recovering from the pain of surgery after getting my wisdom teeth removed. I managed to finish the game in one week during my spring break, but I still remember that experience if I even see the game.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
![]() Xenosaga Episode I would be the only game I think that has a negative memory associated. Summer of 2003: I was still hung up about this girl I really liked. We were still friends after she rejected me. I rented Xenosaga to try and cheer me up since I hadn't actually played any games since I met the girl (she took up that much of my thought). We had plans to go to the bar with friends, but I was emo and tried staying home to play XS. Unexpectedly, she came and got me. That did make me happy. The arcade Golden Ax for me. My teacher let me borrow five dollars but gave me a twenty dollar bill. My class went to a skating rink and instead of skating I spent all afternoon pllayig with the twenty dollars... Especially Golden Ax in particular. When the teacher asked for her change I gave her none. Beating of my life.

New Years Day, year 2000, i had been at a new years party the night before, and ate more than i had ever eaten in my life. I woke up the next morning, and was feeling rather gross. I don't often throw up, even back then, and about a month ago was the first time i've thrown up since this event.
I woke up at around 6:00 AM, feeling rather gross, but because i do suffer from some minor digestive problems, i often feel sick to my stomach when in fact, i'm not. So i did the only logical thing to do when i couldn't sleep. I went and played Nintnedo 64. I popped in Donkey Kong 64. I was wandering through Fungi Forest with Lanky Kong, and eventually felt too gross to keep playing. Shortly after, i hurled something serious, and ever since then, using Lanky Kong in the main area of Fungi Forest has made me feel slightly queasy. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Towards the end of 8th grade I lent some guy my Kid Chameleon. The next time I saw it, it was sitting on a shelf inside a new/used videogame store. I recognized it was in fact my game because of markings on the case. I'm still bitter about that to this day.

Was he a stranger or a friend? Did you break his nose?
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Did you ever buy it back?
And that reminds me of my friends... Apparently they have some bitterness towards him because he's been a bad host whenever they go to his house... So they stole half his video game collection including his Guitar Hero. He probably has 5 PS2 games still left in tact. Mostly because they were bad games. And I guess I have one recently. :| Wii Sports. ![]() No, I didn't smash a TV or anything, but me, my younger cousin (11 years old), my next door neighbor (12 years old), and my friend were all playing the Power Throws training thing. I had just beat my personal best by smacking down a solid 521 pins in the challenge. My cousin proceeds after me. She told me she's played the game, but isn't amazing at it. By the end of the challenge, she ended up beating my score and smacking a score I can't even touch yet. She got 586. T_T I still have bad memories on that... It bothers me i'm not good in Power Throws either. T_T This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
FFVIII and FFIX, because that was right around the time I got my first "serious" boyfriend and both games were part of our relationship up until we broke up after about a year. Basically, I turned him on to the FF series, and VIII was his first one ever. So he totally fell in love with it, but I had been playing the series since the beginning and I wasn't all that happy with it. I guess on good days, I can find love for what VIII does (I don't totally hate it in the first place). It suddenly became "our game" and we went as far as to buy the jewelry for Squall and Rinoa, and watch lame ass tribute videos set to songs like..."Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon. *shudder* Just thinking about it irritates me already.
Eventually I got fed up with his "omg the graphics are so pretty I love Rinoa she's hot, Squall is so emotional and awesome!" and "all the FFs before this don't look very nice like this game so I don't want to play them." Add to that, FFIX released and he again fell in love with that one (and with Garnet ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Let's see... I was playing Star Wars: Rogue Leader when my dad walked out, and I didn't even find out what happened until the next day. That was quite grim.
Later on, there was a short period of time before we had to sell up to keep afloat during which I'd sit in my room playing TimeSplitters 2 with no sound. The room was almost empty of furniture, I could constantly hear my mother screaming down the phone downstairs, and on this particular occasion I was "enjoying" a half-term break off school - In that I didn't see a single person for two weeks. That was not fun. I can't really bring myself to play that as a result. Oh, and when I got Pokémon Yellow as a birthday present (I was ten, eleven?) I brought it to school along with my brand new Game Boy Colour. I went back to my dorm later that day and found that the spot in which I'd hidden it - Under the mattress - Had been disturbed. Disturbed as in "holy shit why is my bed all over the floor". Whoever stole it had had the decency to not take my Game Boy, but they did take the game. AND MY BATTERIES. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Legend of Zelda: TP/Lego Star Wars: ToT - I had hernia surgery a few months ago. When I first got out I was out from work for a week and thought, "Oh, I'll have time to play Zelda now, no biggie." Wrong - surgery + Wii-mote swinging = ouch!! So, to pass the time I instead played Lego Star Wars all the way through.
