Nurses found guilty of "infecting" children with HIV

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/africa....ap/index.html

This seems to scream "Scapegoat!" to me. Rather than admit to the faults of the government and the hospital (which according to testimonies is rather unhygenic), they decide to blame foreign workers for this debacle.

I'm sure Libya probably has an AIDS problem, but my guess is the govt. wants to blame them so that they don't seem to be responsible for causing that problem (or at least not doing much to solve it. Can't blame them entirely, as AIDS really sucks since there's no cure, and the drugs to treat it is expensive). But by finding those nurses guilty, they're just making themselves seem worse in the eyes of the world (the article even mentions the guy running Libya is kind of a crackpot).

So, do you think the nurses were fairly judged on this, and were guilty of an international conspiracy? Or are they just easy targets to blame on bigger problems in Libya?

I'll say one thing though, I'm not going to be visiting Libya anytime soon.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

An international legal observer, Francois Cantier of Lawyers Without Borders, promptly criticised the retrial for failing to admit enough scientific evidence. Research published this month said samples from the infected children showed their viruses were contracted before the six defendants started working at the hospital in question.

Luc Montagnier -- the French doctor who was a co-discoverer of HIV -- testified in the first trial that the deadly virus was active in the hospital before the Bulgarian nurses began their contracts there in 1998.

More evidence for that argument surfaced on December 6 -- too late to be submitted in court -- when Nature magazine published an analysis of HIV and hepatitis virus samples from the children.

Using changes in the genetic information of HIV over time as a "molecular clock," the analysts concluded that the virus was contracted before the six defendants arrived at the hospital -- perhaps even three years before.
Quote:
Some 50 relatives of the infected children -- about 50 of whom have already died of AIDS -- waited outside the court early Tuesday morning, holding poster-sized pictures of their children and bearing placards that read "Death for the children killers" and "HIV made in Bulgaria."

Idriss Lagha, the president of a group representing the victims, rejected the Nature article, telling a press conference in London on Monday that the nurses had infected the children with a "genetically engineered" virus. He accused them as doing so for research on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies.
lol civilization lol

There's nothing more to be said - they will die as surely as every uninformed moron screams "death to amerika" and "die fuckin ay-rab". People must be pleased first.
"look at us lol, we're killing the people who would harm your children - elect us again! we'll send nukes to the rest of them!
but we'll buddy up with good ones for UN aid! wee~!"

There's nowhere I can't reach.
