Final Fantasy III DS

here's what's known about the DS remake of Final Fantasy 3.

Hiromichi Tanaka, executive producer of Final Fantasy XI, is heading the project, and staff members from the original game, including Kazuhiko Aoki and Koichi Ishii, are supervising the project to ensure the remake retains the feel of the original. Early screenshots suggest the layout of the dungeons and towns will be identical to the original. Their supervision is needed due to the fact the game will not be a mere graphics update like the updates for Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II, but a total overhaul using the Nintendo DS's 3D capabilities.

"The big news since the remake's announcement has been the switch to 3D visuals. Although it was made for the Famicom, Tanaka believes that the original FFIII was a technical marvel for its time, and when originally considering a port to a portable system some years back, Square Enix found it difficult to move all the technology and content over. Time passed, and the 3 color visuals of the NES title grew too dated to consider a direct port, and so we're seeing a 3D version.

But we're not getting a true 3D environment with the title. While in the fields or town, you can't rotate the camera, as the game uses what Tanaka refers to as "pseudo-3D" for these areas. You can, however, zoom in and out. It seems that you'll be able to rotate the camera while in buildings, though.

Outside of 3D, the game will also be using many of the DS's unique features. It's possible to play the game from start to finish using just the touch pen, for instance. The game will make use of the dual screen setup for a number of features, although Tanaka isn't talking specifics just yet. Also planned are wireless features. While the main game is a single player RPG and thus won't be compatible with multiplayer play, Square Enix is considering implementing some bonus features.

Gameplay changes are also being kept under wraps for now. Tanaka is hoping to balance the various jobs you can have as part of the job system, and also make it so that jobs such as the Viking that weren't popular back in the original will be used more frequently in this version. While discussing game systems, Tanaka also points to the more personable characters that have greater ties to the various game scenarios. This should be a big improvement over the original's story telling" - http://ds.ign.com/articles/662/662230p1.html

I can't wait for this, it'll be interesting to see how the game shapes up in 3D

I wonder if the battle camera will move rather than just having the same angle all the time. So far the pictures look spectacualr.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Hmm, interesting, for a 3d remake on DS the graphics don't actually look too bad. Wonder how they'll use the dual screens, probably menus and such on the one and the game world on the other. I think it would be cool/funny if they had the original 2d version on one screen and the 3d representation on the other. I mean, if the dungeons and such have the same layout, it would actually work. Of course there's pretty much no chance of that happening, but it's neat to think about.

I wouldn't mind having it so that all the action happens on top, and all menu-related activity happens on the bottom with the touch screen.

I'm super pumped for this. I hope we see some progress come E3.

I'm curious as to why Square Enix chose FFIII, a relatively obsucre game in the series, for this type of treatment. Perhaps because it is obscure (at least here in America) that they are remaking it.

Because it hasn't been remade yet for any console, so more people who haven't played it yet will look at it.

On one hand, the 3D graphics look nice for a DS game. On the other, I think they look kind of washed out, compared to the 2D graphics. Despite my indifference to most recent FF titles, I'm looking forward to this type of old-school remake. DS can use some RPG lovin, in any case, especially considering RPG titles are the only games I'm interested in for PSP at the moment.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Those are interesting screens. I'm curious to see how this game turns out since I only vaguely remember playing the original FFIII ROM years ago. It's good to hear that there may be changes with the job system though.

I think another reason was because they LOST THE SOURCE CODE. I mean, who does that? If they still had the source code, we'd have seen "Dawn of Souls: I, II, III" or something along those lines.

A mission should you choose to accept it: someone steal the FFVI source code so we can see a full 3-D makeover.

I just beat the NES version recently, and I must say this game is a truckload of fun, and that is saying alot for it's time, as FF2 and 1 areant nearly as entertaining. I would probobly place this game very high among the entire series as well.

I am heartily awaiting this re-updated-release, and if they keep the same gameplay mechanics, the essentials of course, this will have a great turn-out.

Also, I recomend anyone and everyone to play the original as well, that is if you haven't.

OMG, not even in my dream I wish the remake of this game. Now I really hope they will remake tracks from the OST as well. FFIII music is one of the best compared to others.

Btw, Is there any english version of original FFIII? I want to play it as well.

None of that approaches this:

Now all they need to do is turn Chrono Trigger into a 3D remake for the DS, and Sony will cease production of the PSP.

But that looks incredible. If they start doing this to older Final Fantasy titles, I can't wait to see what Narshe will look like in 3D, from VI. This game definitely appears more loving in 3D over the original.

You know that I'm getting this for sure; The only FF that I had not even bothered to come across a rom for so it'll be a totally new game for me. I don't think this will be fading away like Minstrel Song.

They were, but it was a fan-based one. Well it was for the PC. Unfortunately, they were forced to disband.

hey Teresa, Shonen Jump is reporting that it'll be released in July in Japan and they also have a rumour that it's somehow Wi-Fi compatible. More on the NA release date should be announced at E3.

here's a new game art pic
