I hate e-drama...

This is angst-rant. I don't know if I'm really asking advice, but I need to explain this somewhere and get it off my mind. You want to give advice, please do, I'll listen. You want to laugh at e-drama, you may do that too, I don't care.

So I'm the head-administrator at this other message board. I more-or-less inhereted the title. I had been with the board since the beginning, a moderator for about as long, and sort of the board's mother-figure, as even the people who hate EVERYONE on the staff, seem to like me. Yay, go me. Everyone comes to me with their problems. The board has pretty much died off now, but people still visit now and then, and I still poke it to make sure things aren't going nuts.

There are a few members on the board who are known for their e-drama. I will refer to them as Dick, Jane and Bob. Oh, and "Rich" who is supposedly Dick's "brother", but due to their location claims versus same IP address, I highly doubt they are different people.

For the record, Dick sets off alarms in the "woman's intuition" section of my brain. Something that just questions anything dramatic that he posts. The first of it being him having an asian girlfriend model, who was pregnant with his child but was killed in a car accident. Okay. Possible. I guess. I let that slide with the benefit of the doubt.

Then there's Jane, who I also question the validity of her claims. Being she's lost her model collection twice, which, supposedly both were big but we never saw any evidence of it, but... benefit of the doubt... also her claims of being a med school student for a while, saying it's easy to earn a six figure salery, as well as driving a big-rig... (please tell me you need a special license for big-rig driving, she lives in my state and that's just scary.)

So Dick and Jane... they start an online relationship. Not much was said about it until the broke up.

Then "Rich" came by to post that after the breakup, Dick went out drinking and was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

ALARM ALARM went the woman's intuition! Namely due to finally putting the "Hey, Dick and 'Rich' supposedly go to college in different cities, but their IPs are the SAME." Sure enough, Dick was not dead. Dick and "Rich" kind of disappeared for a while.

Then along comes Bob. Supposedly Jane met Bob through a webdesign job (mind you, we never knew what web design place this was, nor saw any of the sites they worked on). It was a small, but growing company... I think this was around the time she made the "6 figure salery is easy!" claim. Soon, Jane and Bob are living together. Bob also registers on the board. And now we have another set of people posting from the same IP address. Great. Supposedly, they were to get married or something. I don't remember well.

Time passes... Dick comes back... Bob has seemingly disappeared. So Dick and Jane are back together. They're a bit more vocal about it. They say they want to invite me to the wedding, since... I own the board and all. Okay! LoL, do what you like. I like my side of the state, thank youuuuu!

They break it off again. No traumatic DEATH this time at least. Both hang around, and then Bob's back. And Jane's living with Bob still and/or again. No one really likes them much. They make wordy posts without really saying anything useful or only saying stuff that's in contradiction to what they said before.

But hey! They haven't hurt anyone or broken the rules, so I wasn't going to kick them off. Every society needs a bit all types. Or so I thought.

Last night I get an IM from Dick. Starting with him saying it was him, then "i need to ask you something" and then, "its an emergency, trust me." Which of course causes an, "oh fuck okay" response from me.

He goes on to tell me that he was trying to get Jane away from her new boyfriend, I guess, and well, New Guy found out and was now trying to kill Jane. Of course I'm skeptical. He wants Jane's IP address to give to the police so they can locate her. I refuse to give it to him, and instead I call the police myself. Heck, if it's important, I do want to help. Either the police knew what I was talking about, or they did a damn good job humoring me, but I gave them the IP address and left my phone number.

Dick thanks me, then spazzes and logs off a bit after midnight EST.

Being that I'm nuts and a generally caring person, I stay on the message board to see if anything comes up.

And Jane logs in. Hn. At about 1:40am.

Jane posts, replying to one of Dick's post with "rember i see everthing", which is very unlike the verbose Jane, and is just creepy, in consideration of what Dick told me earlier. I also notice the IP address is different. I look it up and it's a city about an 1:40-50 minutes away from the previous IP.

What the fuck.

Her sig was also changed to include "i see everthing". Bah. There's still that bit of skepticism in the back of my mind.

Later, "Rich" comes on and posts on a different topic asking why Dick isn't returning his calls. I'LL TELL YOU WHY, "RICH". IT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE BOTH USING THE SAME DAMN IP EVEN THOUGH DICK MOVED TO A DIFFERENT STATE.

That added to my skepticism, of course.

Jane is STILL logged in from the second IP. But not doing anything. The board refreshes every five minutes, so if left on the main page...

Bob is now actively posting from the first IP. He referred to Dick as a pawn in a bigger game. But otherwise seems to be posting 'normally'... which is almost odd, and too convenient considering everything.

So... I'm not sure what to think. I'm not sure if that "SHE'S BEING KILLED AS WE SPEAK" was actually true, or if it's just another bit of fake e-drama. I'm kinda hoping it's just fake e-drama, and that, since the police have been notified... they're found and fined for wasting the police' time.

On the other hand... the police ARE involved, which doesn't seem, logically, like something one would want to mess with if they were lying.

I almost want to call the police station again and see if I can follow up on the stuff, just to verify it and get the stupid crap off of my mind. I'm not sure if that's appropriate though? I wouldn't mind a suggestion on that, I guess...

This is not something that I like being caught up in, even if it's not my problem, I'm just too caring in general, and it's wayyy too weird. I should be job searching! Not playing IP detective.

If the police are involved, there's not much more you can do about it, but I myself would almost definitely have to follow up after something like that. That's just a little creepy. E-drama or not, fake or not, it's more of a waste of time to worry about what-ifs, than waste a few minutes following up with the police.

EDIT: Yeah, what Sass said below... my advice above is merely for the fact that you've already gotten yourself involved, and now you're worrying yourself over it. So follow up to allay your worries and then leave it alone.

Why did you even get the cops involved. Don't be a fool. Leave it between them. If it was such a concern to tom dick or harry or whatever the fuck his name is, let HIM call the cops.

You're an administrator on an internet forum. You're not their guidance counsellor. Seriously - stay the hell out of their fucked up personal dramas. Its frankly none of your business, and it's godawful stupid of them to run around talking about it on the internet.

Leave them be. Let them deal with their mess. TRY not to get yourself involved.

I didn't get the cops involved. I just called and said "On behalf of ___ and ___ I'm giving the IP address." And that was that. And yes, the "crying wolf" story has come to mind.

I'm thinking I'll just let it be. If it is something, the cops have my phone number if they need any further IP information. They are idiots for prancing around online leaving their IP trails. I have to say that I laugh a lot at that. But yeah... their e-drama is like a shit covered fan. I just hate that they have to get it smeared all over the message board, especially when no one else gives a damn.

Mmm, Dick just messaged me. Hot damn am I excited now.

Hmm... Apparently Bob and whoever wants to kill Jane are not the same person like I had thought. Whatever. *edits first post to fix that*

I called the police again to update the IP and verify the story. They said they do have a detective working on it. o_0 Crazy. (Also, I heard some guys in the background saying that they love video games. Video games FTW!)

But yeah, even though it's none of my business, if something does/did happen, I don't want to be in the frame of mind of "What if I could've prevented that?" I've done what I can, and that'll help me feel better.

Invite them to Gamingforce. We'll put their murder plots to shame. We might even make one of them kill themselves with our kinetic karma policing skills. If we want to find out who slept under whose bed for 3 months or who got raped and murdered, I don't think any of us have a problem seeing it on the news after the fact. See, now you've single handedly taken the fun out of it for whoever was going to post a thread about it because you spoiled it before it became news. Way to be a team player, ball hog.

Jammer, I feel bad for you that you are even caring for e-drama. If you don't know these people personally, I say let them be. Most of the time e-drama is artificially created for attention, and you know how much the internet is filled with attention starved pubescent teens. Whoever this "Jane" person is is definitely a fake, and from reading your topic post, she is the typical attention starved individual who is making things up to make people care. She "claims" she is a model, a med school student, etc. Pretty big statements if you ask me. Just ignore her and the whole drama. It's none of your business to care for fakes.
