To tolerate being too warm, or too cold.
To tolerate being too warm, or too cold.
Just this morning I found myself shivering when I was taking out the garbage just outside the house. After that, I bolted back right into the house - Aahhh, nice and toasty warm again. I then wore a sweater and started getting to work around house chores. Just about 30 minutes later I find my back and head was working up a bit of a sweat, so I took off the sweater. It just suddently felt like a nice cool breeze. In this thread, discuss whether you tolerate being “too cool/cold” or “too warm/hot” and state your reasons why. Note, this is NOT a thread about HOW you cool down or warm up to adjust your body temperature. I personally would take feeling some sweat over shivering. Shivering makes me feel quite vulnerable for some reason – and is more uncomfortable when sweating. I associate shivering to sickness, while sweating is to regular physical work (despite excessive sweating is also not a very good sign). How about you? I can't stand hot weather. Cold weather is fine, because I can always throw on more clothes. But once it gets above 80, I'm still sweating in just a t-shirt and shorts, and I can't remove anymore clothes (unless I'm by myself). It also doesn't help that summers in Michigan are amazingly humid. When the temperatures get really hot, I constantly feel sluggish and have trouble doing lots of work.

I can tolerate cold more than heat. Mainly that is because it gets so darn cold in Winnipeg. When its hot, I have a harder time cooling down, while getting warmer is much easier. Shivering is the best thing ever for warming up.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I'm more fond of cold temperatures than hot ones.
In hot temperatures, I tend to feel a bit drowsy. Even if I pull off my six to eight hours of sleep the night before, I mostly end up taking a nap in the middle of a hot day. It kind of bugs me that I've spent an otherwise productive (ha, internet) few hours into sleep which I didn't really need. During cold days, in addition to sweaters and all that jazz, I can move around at a faster rate to keep myself warm. If I needed to get something done outside, the cold helps motivates me to get it done that much faster. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I'm a fat bastard, so I much prefer being too cold than too warm.
You can prepare for cool/cold temperatures, but you can't prepare to the same extent for warm/hot temperatures. If it's too cold, you can always put on a jacket or something. If it's too hot, you can't quite walk out naked or anything. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I find the cold to be bracing, and excessively warm weather just saps my strength. So yeah, I can definitely tolerate cold weather more easily. I prefer it.

It really depends on the scenario, but I tend to tolerate heat more than the absence of it. Getting up in the morning and taking a shower is dreadful when the temperature is low. Furthermore, I rarely perform physically-intensive tasks, and I stay indoors most often.

I can tolerate both just fine, which is why I can get by wearing T-shirts all year round. Of the two, cold is easier to deal with because you can always warm yourself up through physical activity, whereas with extreme heat, there's really nothing you can do to help yourself. Cold air keeps me alert, while hot humid air makes it very difficult to breathe.

Most of the time, I prefer heat, unquestionably. Might have something to do with being born and raised in Hawai'i, where the weather ranges from warm 'n' humid to hot 'n' humid. Being cold and shivering distracts me more than being hot and sweating.
The one time I can't stand heat? Going to sleep. If it's too cold, I can just slap on an extra layer, but if it's too hot, I'll stay awake all night. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
This reminds me of work.
I go in, usually wearing some sort of dressy top, as well as a sweater. Within an hour, I feel like passing out because of the heat, so I take off the sweater. During my break, bwhich I usually spend downstairs in the designated room, I'm usually freezing. So, afterwards, when I head back onto the selling floor, I put my sweater back on. ![]() ![]() (for anyone who doesn't know, I'm a cashier at a department store. If it matters any. XD) Anyway, I hate being hot, I think, more than being cold. I get physically sick if I'm too hot for too long. Of course, being freezing is no picnic, either. GOID. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Cold is better. I'm a cool temperate oceanic girl...anything above 18 celsius and I get really really irritable and turn an unpleasant shade of pink that clashes with my hair (red). Therefore I strongly object to hot weather, give me a nice crisp winter morning anyday.
I have spent too many summer holidays on a coach in a rented apartment incapable of movement to enjoy the whole 'heat' business. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I'm pretty comfortable with the cold. I never wear more than a short-sleeved shirt indoors or a hooded sweatshirt outdoors. Although I do wear a hat when I have to walk to work or something in the winter because my hair is buzzed real short most of the time.
Really can't stand being hot, though. Drives me insane during the summer. Especially with walking to work - nothing worse than sweating before I even start my goddamn shift. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I am much more comfortable being cold than hot. I can go for a walk in 30 degree weather in a t-shirt and shorts (as long as my hands are kept warm) and feel just fine, but if it's hotter than 70 degrees or so, I will be sweating like a pig.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
I can tolerate extreme heat since I'm not used to being in a cold place for too long. I stay inside during most of the day, and I'm only really outside when walking in between buildings at school or at home.

I live in New England where the weather is wonderfully bipolar here.
I'm a more tolerant of the cold rather than the heat. Heat for me just slows me down and tires me out while the cold causes me in a way to move a little bit more. FELIPE NO |
I like being warm, even slightly sweaty. It feels comfortable to me. My ambient temperature is about 30 degrees. Last summer I had an awesome job (well, I liked it) working as a landscaper among other things. It was a fantastic break from engineering classes really. Anyway, we'd be out digging ditches and spreading gravel when it was 35 degrees out. That worked perfectly fine for me.
On the other hand, I grew up in New Brunswick, Canada. Our winters would routinely drop below -40 degrees, and for about half the year I'd have to stay under layers and layers of clothing to keep warm. That was not so pleasant. So to answer the question, I'd rather tolerate being too warm. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I can tolerate coldness better. I actually like a certain briskness, and as said before, you can just layer up if you need to. Also, I don't perspire as much in cold, so I'm not irritated from sweat.
With heat, there's not much you can do if you're too hot, and the humidity makes it too stuffy. I'm pretty comfortable letting a draft in or sleeping with a fan on me. I can tolerate cold temperatures well. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Fucking definitely coldness better. You can always put enough shit on when you're cold, even if you suffer a little. But you can't peel enough shit off when you're hot. Then you start sweating, especially in humid places like Guatemala, and it just gets MISERABLE.

I prefer to be COOL, but to wear warm clothing (mainly like my head to be cold because I get headaches easily and heat makes my head hurt more) I even turned the heater off in my room. This does create a SMALL problem when I can't feel a couple of my toes (mainly the toe next to the big one on my left foot and my little toe on my right foot ![]() I can't stand being WET and cold tho...that's why i hate snow. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Personally, I wear shorts (and usually sandals) year round, so obviously I tolerate the cold pretty well. I do some mind over matter shit and that helps. The problem with heat is that I sweat, and that makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Though if it's not too humid, I can deal with it. I just hate traveling in the heat, because I manage to sweat through two shirts. It's especially rough on the subway when the shear number of people creates unbearable heat and I drip sweat on some dude. I have to bring a change of shirt so when I get to my destination I can actually relax and enjoy myself.
Actually, the whether in Hoboken has been really bipolar. It's summer one day, and winter the next. And the wind only comes when it's cold. =( I have to check weather.com every day to see if I need a jacket. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

I like it cool because I could always just put on more layers or wrap myself in a blanket. I prefer wearing shorts, a short-sleeve shirt, and tsinelas (flip-flops) most of the time anyway. My nose also tends to get stuffy in the warmth, and I seem to breathe easier in the cool. But "too cold" can also make my nose overflow would awesome also, and then I'd have to clear some of it out.
![]() Most of my work (both now and during school) pretty much kept me cooped up inside usually in front of a computer. Weather permitting, I'd go outside if it was nice just to be outside... play some ball, do paperwork outside, eat, something. I can put up with too hot since I'm a summer baby. Okay, so that has nothing to do with it, but I can tolerate it. I prefer the cool though. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I absolutely love cold weather. A shame that it doesn't snow here in Australia. On the other hand, I can't stand being hot, and unfortunately it's a scorching summer again over here. Perhaps if I lived in a country that is as cold as Australia is hot, then I would say I tolerate the hot more, but alas I love the cold, and don't just tolerate it.
Edit: Plus...hot weather means flies! Bah! What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I honestly think my being born in December has something to do with my liking things cold.
I can't stand being hot, and I have a hell of a time tolerating it at work when the boss either turns up the heat or turns off the air. I work in a pizza place, and 700 degree ovens tend to heat up the place nicely. I find going into the giant walk-in a lot helps, too..... How ya doing, buddy? |
As a Canadian, I'm much more suited to the cold. While I don't enjoy minus 40 weather, I'd rather fight the bitter cold than face scorching heat.
I also love air conditioning so much that Al Gore would kill me with his bare hands.
