Music: How long does it take before you get fed up?
Just wondering... when you listening a music, how long it takes before you are really fed up with 'em and dont want to listen it anymore?
I only could stand most of western music from MTV just once before getting bored, probably with some exceptions toward some real good songs. For JPop, it usually takes around 4-5 or more before I stop listening them. For final fantasy music... I remember listening it around 8 times or more before I'm really getting bored to Uematsu's music. Now I dont want to listen them again as I used to be. O_o; Since I prefer classical/instrumental music, I could stand them around 30 times or more before I need to break (such as listening other genres, finding new music, etc). How about you? How long it takes before you getting bored and fed up with certain music? Also, is there any logical explanation to explain our preferences over "fed up with music"? EDIT: I also notice that I couldnt stand music that uses natural sounds such as water and birds sounds after I found out their repeat pattern. Gawd ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark.

You know when a song gets played on the radio too much? And by that I don't mean its standard twice or thrice a day run; I mean every hour, on the hour, gotta-hear-that-NEW-Nirvana-joint-because-it-was-CLASSIC perpetual hammering in the skull.
This is how I've come to hate a lot of mainstream music; not because I think it sucks but because it's been played to an obscene degree and I really just want radio DJs to be executed in their respective village squares. I remember that I used to LIKE listening to the radio back when Soundgarden wasn't played 23 times per day and when Stone Temple Pilots actually rocked my socks within their allowable one-play-per-week slot. Now... No such luck. ![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Were you radio DJ? well, it's understandable if you are getting bored to mainstream music just in a day because there are 23 times same request around. O_O;
I rarely listen radio though, I dont have any interest to listen mainstream music at all. Only classic or jazz will do because they people rarely request certain songs (and their popularity here is close to non-existant). EDIT: btw, the 2nd last line of your sig is <3 This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

You know, I used to think Sexyback (yeah, I like Justin Timberlake...and what?) was garbage. But then after hearing it over and over again on mainstream radio I began to really warm up to it. Now I think it's catchy! There are certain songs that I need to be beat over the head with before I actually like them.
Anyways, it takes a long time for me to get tired of something. I could probably go for a few hours or so before getting annoyed. Heck, when I like a song I tend to play it over and over again before I move on. However, when I actually do get tired of something, it takes a while for me to go back to it. I can't stand to listen to anything John Legend because I had listened to it so much when I had bought the album. Everything about it grates and whenever one of his songs come up on my iPod I skip it. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

There's no real set number of times I'll listen to a song before getting fed up. I never really put a single track on repeat, though it happens sometimes. Sometimes I'd put an album or just a few select tracks (from possibly more than one album) on loop. Usually, my playlist (both on computer and PMP) is filled with a huge variety of genres just so I can get to hear everything. I remove tracks that I don't care for while keeping the ones I do like so they can be played again sometime/adding them to another "current favorites" playlist-type-thing.
I don't listen to the radio too much, so I don't really know when a song is "getting overplayed." Hell, I've often overplayed songs way before they get overplayed on the radio. Usually, someone lets me know what's going on. I'll admit though that I get fed up with some genres quicker than others. I'll get bored/sick of most rap and some vgm pretty quickly. Most electronic music, j-pop, and rock artists I get sick of in "cycles." Oh, and I can not get sick of YUI. Ever. <3 I was speaking idiomatically. |
It really depends on the music that I am listening to. If I am listening to something that I like then it takes me a while to get fed up of it. At the moment I have been listening to Evanescence's new album a lot. It's all I have listened to for the past 7 weeks. I really like it, and have not gotten bored with it yet.
When I do get bored of music, it is normally a long time before I go back to listening to it again. Sometimes I don't even go back to the music that I got bored with. If the music takes a while to get going then it normally doesn't last any longer than 20 minutes before I start to look for something else. Most amazing jew boots ![]() |

I have 3000+ songs and sometimes I get bored and annoyed... but that is because by shuffler isn't that great. Overall though, I have no problem listening to my music over and over... just not three times in one hour... Which happens on the rare occasion. Winamp seems to be the best thing for shuffling so far. Unless I don't know of other options.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
^Tell me about it. Yesterday Winamp decided it was ok to play "The Beatles-The End" followed by "A Guitar Tribute to the Beatles-The End". That's just fucked up.
I love music. I fall in and out of love with the occasional mainstream band, but for the most part my playlist just grows. When I find a new album that I like, I can listen to it straight through once a day for a week or two before it goes into my usual playlist. The nature of good music is such that every listen can bring out something new. I like to focus on different instruments or fool around with the equilizer. I love music. Most amazing jew boots |
Depends. It was almost 2 whole years before I bothered to listen to Sonic music again.Sometimes 'll get super tired of some music and not listen to it for a while. Sometimes my moods just change completely on a whim.

I don't really listen to the radio at all unless I happen to forget my MP3 player at home. Most of the music I manage to hear on the radio gets old very easily, so I find myself listening to older music or instrumental in general. I don't really get tired of music I personally pick out though. There are songs I've been looping for over 5 years now.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
I don't listen to radio much, but I have a reasonably extensive MP3/FLAC collection (approaching 3 weeks), and while I often just throw the whole thing on Shuffle, there are plenty of songs I listen to once/twice a day and never find old:
* Holst - First Suite in Eb * Grainger - Lincolnshire Posy * Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (you could leave this thing on loop for all eternity and I might never get sick of it) * Eagles - Hotel California * Beatles - Yesterday * Eric Whitacre - October There are a few others too. I don't listen to the radio because they only have a playlist of about 20 songs and they're played all the goddamn time, and most of it sucks. I never get tired of listening to metal, and I go through obsessive phases where I'll constantly listen to Nevermore or Opeth or some other band I really enjoy. Otherwise, I just keep my playlist on shuffle and listen to it that way.

I write reviews for the school newspaper, and generally can be found working on music reviews...
To write these, I must know the entire cd like I know my hand... I must know the lyrics, the meaning of said lyrics, what was going on in the artists life when they wrote those lyrics - I have to know the music, I have to be able to critique the mixing and isolations... By the time I'm finished with the review, I'm sick of the CD... So about a week... Then I'll be able to listen to it again usually in about 6 months... I play bass and guitar, music is my life, I have music playing almost 24/7, and will spend money on a CD that I've only heard one song from - and due to my expanded media library, the constant music is not an issues until deadline... What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
The only stuff I really get fedup with is the popular music that plays on the radio over and over. I am not into most of the popular stuff anyway.

In Minnesota we've got a sort of democratic radiostation called 89.3 The Current, which plays all sorts of eclectic music. They have a hip-hop couple of hours on saturday nights for highlighting local hip-hop groups and rising rap/hip-hop artists. They play a lot of foreign music and generally a lot of indie stuff. It's a really nice thing to have, albiet I don't listen to it often, it's usually a treat to listen to. And I don't think I've heard anything repeated on it yet.
I will stick to a certain genre sometimes like electronica stuff, and not listen to much else. Then I'll get sick of all the loops in electronic music and want something else to touch my senses, so I'll maybe go to some VGM (if there's something I like that I haven't listened to a lot.) I'm always jumping around with what I'm listening to on my playlist. I like to have my winamp arranged so that all of my music is loaded at all times so I can access whatever, whenever. Not often will I listen to one track over and over, but it does happen occasionally. I listened to FFXI's "Gustaberg" so many times! What a good track. The FFX OST really treated me well, on the matter of FF OST's... I can listen to Venetian Snares for like... a half hour at tops. =D Twitch 'n Glitch What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() In your dreams, magical thoughts All things are real, unless you dream they're not

It usually takes me a couple of weeks of listening to the same song(s), over and over. I can listen to the same song over and over for hours on end, but I have to switch it up after about a week and a half or two weeks.

I stopped listening to the radio years ago, because every time I'd turn it on, I'd hear the same song, or hear it within 6 minutes. It was like: "Oh, they're playing 'Sandstorm' again...", or "not 'I'm Like A Bird' again!?" Mainstream songs annoyed me with the horrendous amounts of times they would be played.
I only have a total of 3 songs that have surpassed the 100 playcount mark, and one them is less than 2 minutes long. Therefore, unless it's one of my absolute favourite songs, I average anywhere from 50-100 listens before it no longer is something I like as much. Any song that ceases to be my favourite is thrown into playlist of former favourites, aka. "Five Star Songs", which I actually still enjoy listening through with shuffle on. Most amazing jew boots |
The genre of music definitely determines how quickly I'll grow tired of a certain song or artist. Usually, genres of music that do not involve any sort of lyrics are harder to get tired of, especially ambient or classical/instrumental stuff.
On the other hand, if I absolutely love an artist, I'll wear out their album. I think perhaps listening to an album in its entirety up to about 20 times gets me to the point of wanting to switch it up though. In general, I am pretty tolerant of music and rarely get annoyed, as long as it's my own music. However, if I'm listening to a genre of music that I'm not too fond of (country rap, or bluegrass for example) I'll grow tired/irritated much quicker. So in short, if the genre grates on the nerves or is ridiculously repetitive, the quicker I grow annoyed. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I don't listen to the radio, because the majority of the tunes are just repetitive. At least the new shit is anyway. The oldies of mid 80s to early 90s are just my thing though.
I can only listen to a CD a max of 6 or 7 times upon fresh purchase, before I get tired of it for the time being. But, that doesn't mean that I won't revisit the CD again sometime in the future. Sometimes, it sounds even better then. How ya doing, buddy? |
it really depends for me because I like to vary myself between the different types of music. Generally I stop listening when another activity presents itself or I get a headache. but I vary my tastes as well, because I like to one minute be listening to some rob zombie, and the next, listening to some of the songs from "The Phantom of the Opera"
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() You know what? you just might be full enough of shit to apply for congress |
The top-played song in my library according to iTunes is "Tuna 1613" by Therion with 39 plays - Three weeks later I'm still far from sick of it.
Usually I'll listen to a song maybe twelve times maximum before I decide I should check out something new. I don't cast things aside and stop listening to them forever, obviously, but I'll still get bored after a while. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Most of the metal music I listen to I repeat for about ten times. After that I go get my kicks somewhere.

Unless I'm doing analysis, I listen through a CD once and then turn it off. If I find it remotely annoying or unduly repetative, I'll listen to whatever the thematic material is and then just shut it down. This often happens when I listen to commercial rap. I find it interesting for the first minute and then I become very sick of it.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() ![]() |
It depends how attentively I'm listening before I get fed up. If I'm listening properly, it depends on how good the piece is or how well I know it before I get fed up. If I'm just posting on forums just hearing the music, it can go on forever as long as the music isn't too obtrusive.
