Holy SHIT. UCLA student tazer'd by police for not showing ID -- VIDEO INCLUDED

U of A, Yangtze
[BREAKING NEWS]: Student shot with Taser by UCPD officers.
Incident occured around 11:30 p.m. in the Powell Library CLICC computer lab

UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody..

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached..

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately..

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well..

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times..

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition..

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity..

Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers..

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more..

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident..

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close..

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number..

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed..

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did.".

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams..
HERE IS THE YOUTUBE VIDEO

HOLY SHIT.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I love how the guy brought the Patriot Act into this.

Also, the comments on the video on YouTube are hilarious, from both sides of the argument.

And from people like this:

Ya, that's stupid. Horrid abuse of power, but this line: "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power," kind of makes me glad he got tasered. Ten gets you twenty that this fucker was wearing a Che shirt.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I don't understand the mentality of the cops over there. If someone isn't willing to cooperate, talk with them. You shouldn't have to hurt them or scare them into giving information out against their will. It goes against everything you've been told as a kid.

The police were in the wrong. I'm sure talking with the student would have resolved the issue. He wasn't a threat, and he shouldn't have been tased over something so trivial. Period.

How ya doing, buddy?

To be fair, he was being tazered fo no reason. That's enough to make anyone pretty fucking angry.

Watching that made me physically sick to watch. What I'm wondering is, was he refusing to stand up, or was he physically unable to stand up because of all the electrocutions?

Friend linked me to this a few minutes ago, and lo and behold a thread already here.

I didn't really feel bad for the guy when I initially watched the video. After reading the article and finding out why the dude was getting tasered, a teeny bit of sympathy wedged it's way into my heart-meat. It was clearly an abuse of power, but I kind of understand where the administration was coming from. That doesn't exactly warrant shocking a student with a taser, but maybe punching him in the nuts or something?

Well, presuming they are using standard rechargeable batteries, which probably hold a charge of up to 1000mA (1 ampere) though reading the Wikipedia article on Tasers it is likely they use a 9V battery too. Since a shock of 2.1-3.6mA is sufficient for "stunning" it's likely those batteries could go for a VERY long time without fully discharging.

There couldn't be any possible way to look the student up in a database? What a flagrant abuse of power by the police.

That is why I hate cops who abuse their power.

Yes, because AMERICAN cops make people disappear from their houses over night and they're never seen alive again. AMERICAN cops are the physical threat behind a political wing that serves only as a private murder corps. Jesus, Iwata, you're exaggerating just a little there. Some American cities have a reputation for police brutality, but nothing that can compare to countries you're currently very close to, mate.

Yeah, keep in mind, this is in LA. Rodney King hello.

Edit: Also, lol China. It's actually possible to abduct someone in the middle of the night like that in the US if you do enough paperwork. It's a shit load of paperwork though.

I was speaking idiomatically.

SERIOUSLY

Guys, I think you're overlooking one crucial point here. This is LOS ANGELES. People here in California are savages but in Los Angeles they're cannibals. UCLA may be a "prestigious" university but that doesn't mean that the students don't know how to properly initiate violence at the drop of a hat. Trust me on this. If the police took action on the guy there's a good chance that it's one of the pricks I've run into on my numerous visits to the campus who are a little too militant for their own good.
