Adventure games, anyone?

I love adventure games, i mean i LOVE them to death.

Now i've missed quite a few classics, like Gabriel Knight(1, 2 and 3) And curse of a Monkey Island. But i've played stuff like Broken Sword (all), leisure suit larry, day of the tentacle, sam and max, and Indigo prophecy.

What i'm asking is : What games do you think i missed, or should be playing, in this Genre?

I've currently got:

- Gabriel Knight trilogy (Waiting to be played)
- Runaway (A road adventure)

Suggest me some more? Please do remember, suggest stuff for the PC, i love point and click stuff (and 2d) much more than others.

Oh and please don't include anything remotely related to RPGs.

Suggest away !

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Curse of Monkey Island is probably the best in this genre.

Any of LucasArt's games are worthy, so take your pick. In addition to the famous ones like the Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island series, there's also stuff like The Dig (it's more serious than funny, but still excellent), Full Throttle (short game, but really fun) and Grim Fandango (one of LA's last adventure games). Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is one of the best adventure games ever, so be sure to play that. Oh, and try to get the CD-ROM version, since it has all the voices. LA has some of the best voice acting in the biz.

You should also check out The Longest Journey. It's a good game, but I did hate the ending.

I'd recommend playing Grim Fandango. It received a lot of praise but didn't do so well with sales. Now it's one of those 'cult classics' sort of game. Try to download it if you can. It also has good music.

There was an adventure game for the PC, oh, about 10 years ago. I know absolutely nothing about it, save for the brief moment of a demo I played. In the demo, you were outside, in the rain. There were a few people, and it was kinda like a residential district / park scene. Aaaaand it was raining.

I wish I could remember the name of it. It was pretty cool, albeit for a demo. Man, what a lack of a description. :/

I strongly disliked Grim Fandango. The controls were hideous and the story didn't grab me.

The Longest Journey is a classic and a must-get.

Play through the Gabriel Knight games in order (obviously). The second is the best. Be prepared to be VERY frustrated with the third (as it is extremely difficult and slow-paced).

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm having trouble playing the first Gabriel Knight on my pc.

Seems that windows XP can't run at anything lower than 800X600 something (or whatever) and i can't get the game to be full screen (it's 640X480), i really, i mean REALLY hate the borders (the window) i got it to run ok, but no matter what i check it still runs in a window.

Help With that !

Also i failed to mention i've played Grim Fandango. Awesome game, still gonna continue it (Haven't gone past year 3 yet) so dunno how it'll go, but loved it for the whole thing.

Suggest more , people, i can't get enough Adventure.

Btw i'm currently getting Syberia, Bad mojo and The longest journey.

I've played thru 3 chapters of "Runaway - A road adventure" .. It's pretty boring isn't it? And too .. ummm.. "Un-logical" ? Most choices don't make sense, puzzles are tedious for no reason and the pacing is slowed down by the constant walking back and forth. I wonder if i'll work up the interest to finish it.

How ya doing, buddy?

Definitely check out Bad Mojo, and Blade Runner. Both are fantastic diversions from the norm among adventure games, which is to say, hotspot searching. There's a bit of it in Blade Runner, but more of the adventure comes out of the dialogue trees and the fact that you actually search for the evidence on your case yourself. It's not as simple as Teddy Bear + Twisted Wire = You unlocked the door!

I really can't say enough good things about Bad Mojo, though. It's got a great charm all its own, and verges on a noir feel, but it's also got some things about it that will put a smile on your face.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

ScummVM is great for running old point and click adventure games. It's mainly for Lucasarts games but it runs some others as well. Monkey Island 2 is generally regarded as the best of the series, awesome stuff. I've grown up with the Sierra games, and would recommend classics like the Laura Bow adventures (the Colonel's Bequest and Dagger of Amon Ra), Space Quest IV and King's Quest 6. If you haven't - check out www.adventuregamers.com. Good resource site with information and reviews.

One of the very first LucasArts adventure games come to mind; Loom. It had quite a unique gameplay at the time, and probably one of the earliest music games, where you have to replicate certain tunes you hear throughout the game using a sequence of musical notes, each making up for a different spell. It's a bit on the short side, but thoroughly enjoyable on the Expert level. And the talkie version has some funky, british voice acting.

Aside from the usual Sierra/LucasArts games, there's some other less known ones, like Sanitarium; a great horror-themed adventure. The game has a very spooky atmosphere, starting of at a sanitarium full of sick people and people banging their heads on walls, then progressing to other more weird locales. The main character is pretty messed up too, his head all bandaged up and having no clue of identity (at first) or how he got into this situation. Gameplay-wise, it's pretty easy and straight-forward with puzzles that make sense and no illogical item use and such, making you focus mostly on the gripping plot and numerous (3 disc's-worth) cutscenes.

Also the very humorous, if in the same vein of the Monkey Island's, Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2. These were quite fun, with humorous writing and witty dialogues between the protagonist and the myriad of wacky characters in both games.

May I also suggest some quality freeware adventures? There's this top-notch one called No-Action Jackson. Very reminiscent of Day of the Tentacle in both style and gameplay. Even the main character looks like Bernard. Quality adventure that's actually free.

There are probably more I could be adding later, but these should keep you busy for a while. =)

I'd recommend Blade Runner. There are some action elements in this game, but the focus is really more on gathering clues. The atmosphere is dead on, featuring locations from the movie.
A good story, that also has multiple endings. I really like this game.

I also recommend the Discworld games. Well, I've only played 1 and 2 (haven't tried Noir yet). These games are really funny, and have wonderful voice acting (featuring Eric Idle from Monty Python in the leading role). It's a plus if you're familiar with the Discworld books, but when I played the games for the first time I'd never read the books and still found the games absolutely hilarious.

There's an old game called Prisoner of Ice which was based on or influenced HP Lovecrafts works. It's been such a long time since I've played this that I can't really remember how good it actually was, but I do remember that it had a great atmosphere.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

A lot of the better ones have been mentioned already. Sanitarium, most of the King's Quest games, most of the Space Quest games, and the Monkey Island games are great places to start if you want adventure games. I'm not sure why you specified "no RPGs", but if you're willing to waive that, the Quest For Glory games are also great adventures. (They're still adventure games with adventure game-style puzzles, just with stats and battles too.) I haven't gotten very far in Loom yet, so I can't judge it first-hand, but it's recommended often enough that you might want to give it a shot.

Also, check out the various adventure game sites and developers for more obscure gems and fan-made games. AGD Interactive has done fantastic remakes of the first two King's Quest games (I think they're better than the originals!), and you can find a lot of fan-made and abandonware offerings at sites like The Underdogs.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Definitely play the Gabriel Knight games. And in order.

King's Quest always struck me as hit-or-miss. The best ones are probably parts 3 and 6. Space Quest is good, but I love it more for the humor than the puzzles and gameplay. Pretty much every adventure game from Lucasarts deserves your attention.

There's the Tex Murphy games. I've only played Under a Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive, and they're great adventure games, despite being billed as "interactive movies." Contrary to what that might suggest, there's a huge chunk of challenging gameplay to be found here.

You should also try The Last Express, if you can find it. It's different from the usual adventure game in that it runs in real time and that it's impossible to see all the events in one playthrough (you obviously can't be in two places at once), but it's still an immersive experience that I would like to have seen in more adventures from its time.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

a game that is like syberia, I suggest Still Life, it's more like a "thriller" adventure game.

you're a Detective who inquires about a serial killer, but she soon find out that his grandfather, who was a detective too, investigated about some murder that really look like the serial killer she's just currently investigating.

So you have like two investigations, the one in the present and the one of his grandfather in the past.

Really good game if you like the point and click gameplay, it's the same gameplay as Syberia^^

I used to play all the King's Quest, Police Quest and Space Quest games. Leisure Suit Larry was fun once in awhile too and I loved Monkey Island.

Has anyone bought the collections that were recently released?

I don't understand why they didn't include King's Quest 8, I know it has 1-7. I heard 8 sucked, but that doesn't mean they had to exclude it.

some other adventure games I didn't see mentioned are Keepsake and Dreamfall: The longest journey 2.
right now I'm playing Indigo Prohecy which has a "playing a movie" quality like Dreamfall does. The only problem with Dreamfall is that it ends. They leave so many questions unanswered.
Keepsake is more of a traditional graphic adventure puzzler with pre rendered backgrounds. I thought the story was interesting and the music was good.

1) Day of the Tentacle
2) Sam and Max: Hit the Road
3) Monkey Island
4) Monkey Island 2
5) Simon the Sorceror 2
6) Grim Fandango
7) Full Throttle

If you want adventure games and you like the point and click style, then lucasarts has something for you. Those games above are nearly all Lucasarts and are all awesome. Day of the Tentacle will have you hooked and laughing, and Sam and Max is just priceless. Monkey Islands are both legendary. Download/buy them all, its really worth it.
