Okay, NOW Hollywood is out of ideas - Street Fighter sequel is coming

http://comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=17257

Quote:
Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom Ltd. are developing a new movie based on the popular videogame franchise "Street Fighter," says Variety. Screenwriter Justin Marks has been hired to adapt.

Hyde Park and Capcom -- Japanese publisher of "Street Fighter" -- will produce the film in a joint venture.

The movie will focus on the game's most popular female fighter, Chun-Li, but the exact storyline is being kept under wraps.

In 1994, Universal released a Street Fighter movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme that featured most of the characters from the game.

Hyde Park and Capcom's film is targeted to be released in 2008, the 20th anniversary of the game franchise.

Marks just completed writing Voltran for producer Mark Gordon.
Can someone seriously tell me how this was at all a good idea? I mean honestly, I almost cried after reading this. This is such a sad sign of things to come if they're digging for VIDEO GAME FILM SEQUELS for films that were released YEARS ago, and STILL sucked ass. Ugh.

My only hope is that it's animated, but all signs point to it not being that way.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's not really a sequel so much as a film based off a series which already happens to have a movie based on it.

I mean, it's not like the Street Fighter universe is so narrow that they'll be the same movies or something.

How ya doing, buddy?

The only way to save this movie is to cast Jacky Chan as Chun-Li.

Precisely. He'd be reprising his role.

what the heck!?

I actually own the street fighter movie DVD. it was $5 and worth it for the laughs. the movie is seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen. it did really poorly on sales, and the fact that it's $5 in bargain bins is not a good sign.

seriously? why do they think this is a good idea? street fighter isn't even really popular anymore. if they made this during the height of it's popularity maybe I could understand. but this is almost a decade later. I guess they couldn't do worse than the first film.

I wonder if it's going to be serious? or just completely retarded like the first one. I'll probably download it or something if it ever gets made. and that's a big if. I seriously don't see this thing getting finished. it just doesn't really make any sense...

it's hard to be a street fighter fan these days...

I was speaking idiomatically.

Seeing something like this is increasingly making me wish I download movies, cause I certainly wouldn't want to pay to see this (and I wish Capcom would stop whoring out their games for movies). The only possible way I may go see this is if it's animation. If it's live action, it's probably going to suck like 99.9% of all other video game-based movies.

I wonder if they're going to hire Uwe Boll to direct lol (wouldn't surprise me if he did a Ghosts N' Goblins movie).

Btw, here's Jackie Chan in a Street Fighter scene. This is a clip from the movie City Hunter, and although the rest of the movie kind of sucks, it's worth watching simply for this scene alone

From the link:

I wonder if they meant 'Voltron'. You know, the old cartoon that had the 5 robotic lions fighting the forces of evil (like all 80's cartoons hehe) that could form the big robot.

Hm...it can't possibly be as bad as the first one, could it? Even though I did go see the Street Fighter movie twice. It amazed me back then how much the Mortal Kombat movie destroyed this one...

The only thing the original Street Fighter is good for is hearty laughs among friends because of how horrific the whole thing is, how cheesy the dialogue is, and how many times Van Damme can do a roundhouse kick. Even the drinking game (take a drink whenever Van Damme does a roundhouse kick) is flawed because he doesn't unleash anything until the very end.

It's one of the most useless movies ever made. It serves little to no purpose. Making another one is just downright puzzling.

Yeah, the first film was pretty horrid. I used to have it but when it turned up missing I really didn't shed a tear over it. I sure hope that film doesn't turn out to be this abomination like every other video game film released.

This sounds excellent! If Street Fighter can get a new movie, so can Super Mario Brothers! Bob Hoskins against a league of Birdos and Hammer Bros.? Best plot ever!

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I actually am kind of amused by this. Who knows what the movie will actually be like, it may be on par with the first mortal kombat movie. One thins is for sure, it won’t be more boring than the new Superman movie.

That's why you do the drinking game based off of how many times he does the splits. He's kind of conservative in this movie with it, but watch Bloodsport and he does it at least 7 times or so.

Why is this happening? Eh whatever. By the way, City Hunter is awesome just for the fact it's a pretty slapstick martial arts comedy.

Lol, I guess nobody had see this coming :P And why would Chun-Li be the most popular character? In my opion and that of many others, Ryu and Ken are still the most favored plus they are also the story's main characters. It was a suprise reading that Capcom is actually working on this... maybe it might turn out OK as long as they hire talented/convincing martial artists for this. Does Capcom have any experience in filming? I'll be more happy if they also put in many special moves because we all love yoga fire and sonic booms.

See, this is all funny and amusing coming up with possible actors, but you know they're going to cast Devon Aoki as Chun-Li anyway. With possibly Tom Cruise doing a cameo as Ryu.

Daily Mail will write: "Yet another example of how shallow and juvenile the videogame media still is."

As far as I can tell, the DOA movie isn't out yet, so you can't call it garbage.

Not to say that it probably isn't, but I was surprised when they delayed it to December, a sign that movie studios have faith in their product. It may surprise us.

Not even pre-emptively? I mean come on, you can't tell me that looked like a good movie from the trailers (and those are usually better than the actual film itself). That and...Devon Aoki? Splinter's twin sister? Come the fuck on! I mean come on!

What else is the word "now" supposed to mean? What I mean by it is that when they do useless rehashes, remakes, sequels, prequels, whatever, they USUALLY have a good reason for it from a purely business standpoint. This time, NOTHING makes sense in this decision. They've truly run out of ideas if they're dipping into an unsuccessful, widely-hated and just plain retarded video game adaptation.

You know, for someone who claims to have an understanding of how Hollywood works, you're painfully unaware of one of the most famous quotes from a Hollywood cult film.

Well I hope this time around they cast people based on acting ability, not just looking like the character in question. It is possible to have both. Not particularily easy, but still possible.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
