Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 and motherboard compatibility
Alright, I checked my e-mail as usual and I got my weekly PC Club Promo e-mail. I glanced at the bottom and it congratulated me (unless there is another person in my small town with the same name) on winning their Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 contest. I haven't recieved an official e-mail from them or anything as of yet, but I figured I'd contact them tomorrow... well now on to the actual question...
I have a MSI 865PE Neo3 Motherboard (designed for Pentium 4 Prescott) with LGA 775 support and I am currently using a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 processor with hyper threading. I wanted to know if the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 would work on my current motherboard since they are both LGA 775? I am assuming not since my motherboard wasn't configured to run with this newer processor. If that is the case, then would this MSI 775 DDR2 CONROE UATX Motherboard be a suitable replacement? I built my computer over a year ago... I just wanted to double-check that I'd need a new motherboard to utilize this new CPU. Thankupo How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Yes, you will, since the Core 2 Duo chips require DDRII RAM (which necessitates a newer chipset, etc.). Not sure how the VIA chipsets stack up against the new Intel ones. I'd look around at some typical PC benchmarking sites and see which boards they recommend for the new Conroe chips like the one you won.
There's nowhere I can't reach.
killmoms - Well, don't really.
Makin' trailers er'ry day. |
That board is also really low-end. I'm not sure what kind of budget you had planned, but there are a lack of features that really put me off.
The lack of support for RAM faster than 533MHz means that you will never upgrade the CPU in the future. Also a maximum supported RAM voltage of 1.8V ensures your lack of upgradability as new RAM requires 1.9 or higher. I'm also not a fan of the VIA chipset used on that board. Either Intel's P965 or 975X (better) are the way to go. I would recommend this board: http://www.pcclub.com/product_detail...temno=A4854742 but you didn't specify a price range. (C'mon.. you got a wicked fast chip for free, you could stand to spend a little extra for a good motherboard ![]() This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
