Hi, the Star Fall Lake song isn't properly tagged. According to Dubble's gamerip, that's from the Genesis version, and thishttp://www.goear.com/listen.php?v=9684dbf is from the Sega CD version.

Fixed! Anyone who downloaded the previous version should snag the new one.

First to give out points? That seems backwards.

3 points - BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
1 point - Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle
1 point - Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS
1 point - Puggsy (Sega CD Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage

I thought for sure that Overture of Love song would take the week until it was still doing the exact same thing halfway into it.

BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures A wonderful pastoral piece, piano-led and slightly jazzy. Reminds me of the best of The Sims and Yasunori Mitsuda all rolled into one. The opening, with the alternating piano and percussion, is to die for.

Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle Rocket Slime Tank Battle? I wasn't aware that slimes could operate heavy weaponry. This is a decent little track with a quirky edge, but like most DQ stuff I feel that it's less than the sum of its parts.

Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version- Another slightly jazzy piece, but with a heavy techno edge and Japanese singing. Not my mug o' grog, mateys.

Ibara REMIX TRACKS - Rose Garden A serviceable piece of synth-rock, though not really exceptional in any way.

Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS An interesting piece, mixing synthy bits with a flute lead and the occasional bagpipes (!) and male choir (!!). The resulting mixture doesn't quite gel, but it has its moments.

Puggsy (Sega CD Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage I thought the title was Pugsley for a second, and was going to comment on how this tune doesn't fit the Addams Family at all. A short one, this, but I like the piano work.

Shiori Fujisaki Piano Collection - Overture of Love More jazzy piano work in the Sims vein. This one isn't quite as fresh and varied as Bloody Pastures, though a lot of that is probably due to the lack of supporting instruments. Still, not without its merits.

TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre This one's a mess--jagged techno rhythms interspersed with strings. The two parts don't sound like they go together, like someone mixed up the sheet music.

Nice week; nothing that I hated per se.

The Point Spread
Blood-red Fields of Carnage - 3 pts.
Overture of Love - 2 pts.
Kirby's Airline - 1 pt.

EDIT: Nomination time!
Album: King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
Composer: Chance Thomas
Track: The T-Rex Cometh

EDIT EDIT: Listened to the correct version of Puggsy; still no points for it. In fact, It's further from points than it's ever been.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Not a bad week. Seemed a little on the soft side, like last week. But I don't mind that too much.

3 Points: BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
2 Points: Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle
1 Point: Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS

A couple other tracks almost got points, but lacked the necessary variation to really set themselves apart.

By any chance, is there a "karaoke" version of "Wing My Way"? I liked everything about the track except for the vocals. I'd much prefer to hear the long version (if possible) without singing.

Nothing incredibly outstanding to me this week, but a decent batch of solid stuff. And I agree with Dr. Uzuki's comment that Overture of Love would've been great if it didn't just keep doing the same thing over and over.

Listened to the corrected Puggsy track.

Oh, I get it. You wanted to nominate the Genesis version, and it was correctly uploaded the first time, but it was just mistagged as being the Sega CD version.

Double Post:
URGENT

If you previously downloaded the song Puggsy (Sega CD Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage.mp3, you have downloaded an INCORRECT version. Make sure to get the Sega Genesis version from http://www.songoftheweek.info/music/...th%20Stage.mp3. If you have already voted, please listen to the new version of the track and readjust your point distributions if necessary.

If you don't want to change your point total, please indicate in some way that you have listened to the new version of the track. Otherwise, I won't count your votes.

Oops. Sorry for causing undue distress to everyone. I should have confirmed the version of "Star Fall" you were nominating, ikkei. My bad.

As requested, here's a link to a karaoke version of "Wing My Way" (so no main melody performed by the vocalist/s). Note that there are still some vocals (counter melody for the most part). I kind of prefer the short version. But, as I imagine, it's a vocal song so Instant Death 3/Zantetsuken 100% success is guaranteed. Votes to come much later.

No problem!

Ok, here goes my point spreading, as biased as always:

3 points - Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-
2 points - Puggsy - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage
1 point - TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre

That Farland Symphony nomination reminded me that there is a huge world of japanese vgm in PC games nearly impossible to discover

Nice week overall, maybe I expected something more spectacular from Taro Iwashiro's piano collection.

Very nice week with a variety of good stuff.

(2 points) BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
(2 points) Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-
(1 point) Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS
(1 point) Puggsy (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage

And I'd say that Overture of Love and Rose Garden were pretty close runner-ups. The rest was ok. Nothing I didn't like this week.

I'm really digging this week -- no surprise, since piano is so prominently featured.

(3 points) BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures: This is Sakuraba? Color me impressed. Dead-on copycatting of the Sims formula, with tremendous results.

(2 points) Shiori Fujisaki Piano Collection - Overture of Love: Piano. Again. Doesn't go too many places, but the initial foundation it builds is plenty solid.

(1 point) TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre: Nice job of picking out the best track from an otherwise mediocre soundtrack. Wonky techno bass somehow agrees well enough with the scattershot strings and intermittent piano work.

Just Missed A Point: Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS

I'll Take It Without Vocals, Please, The Opening's That Good: Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-

Catchy 16-Bit Era Goodness: Puggsy (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage

Has Its Moments: Ibara REMIX TRACKS - Rose Garden

The Worst Of The Week And It's Not Even Too Bad: Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle

Deep Red Pastures: Well, this got a decent variety and a killer piano part. It's good that the end avoids an anti-climax.

Tank Battle: ? I guess I am not so fond of this kind of stompiness. I think it's even meant to be a bit annoying.

Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-: Vocal tracks tend to grow me. This track sounds like an anime intro, meaning I've heard it all too often.

Rose Garden: The intro was a bit lengthy. Although it was the runner up for me, it plays more powerful with clashings and emphasis and all this, but the basic substance doesn't compare.

Sky Sands: I don't really remember much about this track, although it was nice-sounding. Bleh.

Starfall Lake: I like this a lot. It's so cute and the sounds are very distinguished, supporting the melody very well.

Overture of Love: I see that it has more execution than substance, but it's still absorbing. It's the cursed sound of the piano, but for a solo piece, I have heard better and expect more from them than just melancholic feelings well done. I don't even mind the repetition so much. Maybe because it's an OVERTURE? There are a lot of tracks like Staff Roll from Dot Hack still in those Piano Collections waiting.

Ogre: In comparison to the other entries, this was above average. Nice instruments and some intensity.

Point Spread:

3 Points : Starfall Lake (2.5)
2 Points : Deep Red Pasture (2.1)
1 Point : Overture of Love (1.4)

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Well, I don't think the album is THAT bad. Bob, and Ogre's songs are absolutly amazing IMO. King's and Ling's songs are great too. The rest of the songs are meh. Here's my point spread:

3 Points: TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre
2 Points: Ibara REMIX TRACKS - Rose Garden
The rest are meh, but since I got one more point: Puggsy (Genesis Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage

My next nomination:

Album: The King of Fighers '96 Arrange Sound Trax
Song: Arashi no Saxophone 2 (Arranged)
Track Number: 09
Composer: Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan
Catalogue Number: PCCB-00225

Can someone give me a good site with all that other info I need for nominations? As usual, I can upload to the FTP.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Interesting week with a few surprises.

(2 points) Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-
I really like this for some reason. Maybe it's the nifty instrumentation and the infectious melody. But with a certainty, it help[s that I don't mind the vocals.

(2 points) TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre
Very cool and almost sublime. It's a bit unconventional but that makes it all the more refreshing in this instance. I like how the strings and the percussion go very well together.

(1 point) Puggsy (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage
Not sure why but I rather like this. It's very unassuming and yet somehow very charming.

(1 point) BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
Funny how I also wanted to nominate something from the Baten Kaitos series (the first game to be exact). Maybe next time. In any case, "Deep Red Pastures" is a rather nice and pleasant, almost pastoral. It's also quite a surprising piece for Sakuraba. The track sort of reminds me of Kanno's work at times. And maybe a bit of Suikoden.

And my next nomination is yet another vocal song! I can already see the rotten tomatoes flying my way.

* Album: Symphonic Poem Argos no Senshi Original Soundtrack
* Artist: Izzy (Isobel Cooper)
* Composer: Hiroaki Takahashi
* Track Title: Wish
* Source: http://www.gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=VJCP-68457
* Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
* Track Number: 27
* Catalogue Number: VJCP-68457
* Year: 2002

By the way, Manny, one very useful website I frequently use for soundtrack information is Game Music Revolution. For game rips, I usually check out Moby Games for music credits etc.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Not all vocals are bad. I consider most of the Katamari tracks to be vocal and they're rather fun. And 'Baba Yetu' is clearly a well-done vocal.

Some vocal tracks in games seem to be a bit...forced. Others are sharp and warbly, which is just how Japanese singing is, especially when they attempt singing in English. Those bother me, but other voters seem unaffected.

And it's not like vocal tracks haven't won SotW before.

Bloody hell, I thought I posted my point totals already. Hmm.

2 points - BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
1 point - Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle
3 points - Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-

I'm actually liking most of the tracks this week, but The Farland track stands out far and above as the clear winner. Red Pastures is pretty neat for a BK track, which is nice, and Tank Battle is charming, although nothing more.

I was speaking idiomatically.

2 points :: Kirby Air Ride (Game Rip) - SKY SANDS
NOM BIAS. This is one of the better tracks on this game rip, but there are a lot of those, so it was difficult for me to choose. I chose this one because the melody is great and the instrumentation is very different from what would normally be expected of a Kirby game. It's almost one part Wild Arms and one part Klonoa. Anyway, it's a very nice track from an excellent score.

1 point :: Ibara REMIX TRACKS - Rose Garden
Tsukumo is back for the second week in a row. I certainly dig his style. However, I still prefer the arranged version on the OST to this one. This is actually my first time hearing anything from Ibara REMIX TRACKS, but I need to get on listening to the rest. I've been in a shmup soundtrack mood lately, especially with listening to Hosoe and Namiki works, so it's a given. I also own the IBARA OST, and the Under Defeat OST is shipping to me currently. Anyway, somebody hook me up with this soundtrack already!

1 point :: TEKKEN TAG Tournament Direct Audio (US) - Ogre
Probably the best selection from the soundtrack, though I still have yet to hear it in full (I think). A track that combines orchestral with disco and other styles for an excellent sound. I just wish there was a little more to the overall composition.

1 point :: Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime (Game Rip) - Tank Battle
I'm probably biased because I've been playing this game recently (it's great). It fits the situation perfectly, and is a well-composed, energetic track. One of Sugiyama's better tracks, IMO.

1 point :: BATEN KAITOS II The First Wings and the Heirs of God Original Soundtrack - Deep Red Pastures
A great track. It's always nice to hear Sakuraba do something a little different, though I can still identify him through parts of the melody (nothing wrong with that though). Reminds me of something Yoko Kanno might do, though I'm not acquainted with many of her works, so I can't say for certain.

Puggsy (Sega CD Game Rip) - Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage
The melody is good. It reminds me of something from Dark Cloud mixed with Sonic the Hedgehog or something. I would like to give this a point, but I ran fresh out.

Farland Symphony Encore (PC Game Rip) - Wing My Way -Short Version-
A pretty nice track. It has a good groove. Vocals are pretty good, as is the music, but they don't reach into greatness.

Shiori Fujisaki Piano Collection - Overture of Love
It has its moments, but overall, it's just too damn repetitive and boring. This is more like background music than anything else.
