Hard Drive backup (Mac OS X)

My friend needs to backup her hard drive (iBook, running OS X Panther) before she can get her optical drive fixed -- she wants a carbon copy/clone/mirror, but the problem is, the external hard drive she wants to use doesn't support filenames over 21 characters, etc. Essentially, the external is built for Windows even if it's compatible with Macs. Does anyone know what to do in this situation? Find some magical batch file renamer? Some backup program that overrides this character limit? :/ Since her optical drive's broken, no DVDs can be burned, either. Aghh.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Jam it back in, in the dark.

The external doesn't support more than 21 characters in the filename? I know my FAT32 external drives allow long filenames in Windows. Is Mac's implementation of FAT32 just shitty, or is the drive shitty?

If worse comes to worse, uh... I assume you could tell her to format the external drive into HFS+. If you need to use it on a Windows computer, you could install MacDrive 6 on the computer.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Carbon Copy Cloner is your best option here. This utility will let you clone an entire disk to another drive, a disk image (your best option here), can prepare images for Apple Software Restore or NetBoot, can syncronize two disks, and is basically your best friend when you need to create a carbon coby of your drive.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
