What turns you off when it comes to music?
I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to listening to a new and different variety of music than what I normally listen to, but sometimes there are just some quirks in the song that I'm listening to that just completely turn me off to that whole song, and I go "WTF is this bullshit? I can't listen to it anymore, next track or song, please" or just toss that shit in the proverbial garbage can. What would you call that a pet peeve of music? I don't know. I'll probably come up with more in the future as I'm exposed to more music, but here is one case in point, when the song throws out screams or yells of the same stupid shit over and over and over again, whether it's offensive or not. So far I can think of two distinct examples to give you.
#1) I was playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and my favorite radio station to listen on there is Radio X, which features some of the more rock and roll type songs. Anyway there is one song on there from Rage Against the Machine called Killing In the Name, and the song is alright and I like the music, but at the very end of the song the lead singer starts cussing like a motherfucker (pun intended). Now, I don't mind cussing in songs, but when you repeat the same cuss word and shout it out louder and louder each subsequent time for 16 or more times? Now that just gets on my nerves. Everytime I play GTA and it goes to that song I just switch to anothoer boring radio station. I mean you can't be riding around playing that music without people going "WTF? Yes, we all know you're hardcore. Take a chill pill buddy. Deep breaths." Here is the song and lyrics if you're interested: Spoiler:
It's a decent record and I enjoyed listening to the majority of the songs, but one of the songs on there called One Step Closer does the same thing as Killing In the Name towards the end where the lead singer named Chestnut or something like that yells out about telling people to shut up when he's talking to them or something and I was like, "No! Fuck you I won't do what you tell me! (x16) Motherfucker Chester!" It's not as bad as the cussing in the song above, but it's the same annoying concept that just bugs the shit out of me, so I did like Homestar Runner-Baleeted! Here is the song and lyrics if you're interested: Spoiler:

I really can't stand music with horrible production values, a reason why I shy away from most black metal. However there are exceptions if the music proves to be particularly excellent, otherwise I won't give it the time of day.
I generally don't like simplistic lyrics. It won't annoy me if the music is exceptional, like RATM, I really enjoy the music there so I'll forgive some of the lyrical misgivings. I guess it's just a variety of reasons, I really can't pin point it on one aspect. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
A song's lyrics usually cause me to skip it when it comes to mainstream music. I generally prefer songs that have meaningful or interesting lyrics as opposed to something generic or shallow.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Well, there are many things in a song that will irritate me if they are bad. Lyrics, melody, vocals, etc. But a generic song structure will stand out the most to me if I dislike a certain song. I get annoyed by the verse-chorus-verse-chorus format, because it reminds me that I will have to hear certain parts again.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Another example of this was Disturbed, Down with the Sickness. I loved the song when it was released on TV. When I bought the album and listened to the song, near the end it just goes retarted and sounds like he's getting the shit knocked out of him and it's just ridiculous to listen to. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() Take this keycard, you can unlock the doors in the hall with this. Now GO!...JUST go! A hero that lived long enough to see himself become the villain.

With regards to lyrics, I tend not to care about them. If they're in another language or unintelligible, it won't bother me. But if they're in english and either the grammar is poor or the a word is used to rhyme with itself or something equally stupid, it's a complete turn off. With the music itself, we're just getting into personal taste so I won't go there.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
What I hate is when singers feel the need to hit every note they can in their vocal range. You know, where you have Beyonce or whoever her name is and she trails on the last syllable of whatever it is she's singing and the pitch goes all over the place.
"La La La"-ing is also a suck-ness thing. Most amazing jew boots |
When it starts off with a pretty good beat and then within the middle of the song the beat fades into something stupid and repetitive followed by singer yelling lyrics. An example I can use to support this is Luther Vandross' song "Any love". Starts out pretty awesome then it sucks when the beat is changed :/.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Music that doesnt change up at all throughout the entire track. The same beat over and over again. I love techno, trance, house, etc, but I need some variety in the beats.

I hate the majority of R&B and their typical love songs. Every time I walk into a store or something, I have to hear one of those. It's just annoying.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I can't stand RnB. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. That goes for classical, most pop, country and western, and rap. In fact I hate quite a lot of music styles.
The worst thing in music I have heard though, has to be when singers start yelling the song instead of singing it. The song will start off pretty good, and then half way through the song the artist will start yelling the lyrics, and when they start that I reach for the stop button. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
I hate when people use samples from a famous hit song that's not even 1 or 2 months old.
Sampling/recycling a beat and adding like 3 or 4 snares in it to make it sound like a remix. Either sample the original or if you want to remix it make a damn effort at least. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
With rare exceptions, chiptune music really pierces my ears and I can't stand all the high climatic notes as the Song of the Year contest has proven. I'd have to force myself to listen to a chiptune that I didn't know I liked since the highest notes are too high for me to like. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Most R&B music. Puts me to sleep, and the generic female singers are just annoying. I also can't stand songs where the lyrics are screamed incomprehensibly, especially when the (usually) male singer does that "evil deep raspy Satan voice" crap.
It bugs me when the lyrics of a song are meant to be fun or romantic, but just end up being creepy. There's a bunch of songs that are kinda like that Sting song, "I'll be Missing You" or whatever. I remember one that had a music video of a guy walking around in mirrors watching some chick in her house without her knowing. Geez. Spying on someone is NOT sexy or romantic. The law calls it stalking. Also, songs like "You Belong to Me" just weird me out. Lyrics Spoiler:
I'm probably reading too much into it, but I just can't listen to this song without it sounding horrible. The lyrics sound like someone telling his travelling girlfriend "Go on honey, have fun on your trip! But THINK ABOUT ME ALL THE TIME because you're MINE so DON'T YOU DARE CHEAT ON ME BITCH." Most amazing jew boots ![]() The closer you get to light, the greater your shadow becomes.

Yeah that song is actually about a stalker. Glad you figured it out. FELIPE NO |
I can't stand music which is just literally the same piece of music repeated every 4 seconds, think trance. If I like a bar of music I can repeat it in my head, I don't need to have it repeated ad nauseum.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() “When I slap you you'll take it and like it.” |
I don't think that there's any actual audible thing that could turn me off a song. Almost always when I refuse to listen to something it's due not to the song not being any good, but because of some notion I've concocted dealing with corporate whores. A prime example is Fergie. Her new single is catchy as hell, but I refuse to listen to it because she's a talentless whore who's famous for leeching off another group. It's not about what label their on or how popular they are, it's some kind of internal judge of artistic merit that makes me disgusted by certain performers.
But as far as lyrics/styles/song structures go, I'll pretty much take anything. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I can stand really any kind of lyric in a song since i pay more attention the music. As long as the music doesnt depend on the lyrics (the music sucks yet have poetic/great lyrics) then the lyrics arent a bother. Maybe this is why i cant listen to many folk bands other than Bob Dylan.
Also, being from the island from which it grew to the mainstream, regueton is the single worst thing to happen to latin music since Geraldo (of Rico, Suave fame). The genre in my opinion has little to no production values, the music is insanly repited and can be traded with any other song lyrir of the genre since theyre all taking about getting girls at the club. The obly exception ive heard till now is Calle 13 which is modertly good. Sampling isnt a problem to me, especially if its the point of the song (like The Avalanches, Negativland and the Plunderphonic music) BUT i do hate it when artists like the Black Eyed Peas, Puff Daddy, Madonna and Shakira take very very well know songs (Miserlou, Every Breath you Take, Gimme Gimme Gimme) and try to pass them off as theyre own semi original pop hit. The pop music industry shouldnt recycle itself. Most amazing jew boots |
The one thing which I detest most is rap. And meaningless lyrics. Like the Paris Hilton song, Stars are Blind? It's just... pointless. I swear. The first time I hea... no, the first time I read the title and knew the singer, I was immediately thrown off.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() Made by ScarletDeath |
Most rap annoys me, with the acception of the likes of Cypress Hill or Jurassic 5 maybe. Also the likes of Limp Bizkit, Linken Park, Mudvayne, all that "nu-metal" crap drives me up the wall apart from early Korn stuff...
Oh, and those "My Chemical Romance" crowd (Kerrang voted em' best band on the feckin' planet!!). Its actually all people who care about their image more than whether their music is good! Thats about it, any other genre is just a case of what bands/musicians I like and don't like within them I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I think we can conclude that most of the people I know on GFF, including myself detest rap, hip-hop and mainstream pop. Basically artists that doesn't compose/write lyrics/play any instruments as well. Those that can only sing shouldn't even be called musicians. Also, emo rock. Personally I'm not too fond of anything heavier than the standard rock. Whatever metal, heavy and whatnot are a no-go. Too much distortion in the music. As long as the melody/tune are clear even with distortion, then it's fine for me.
R&B is another thing, the jazzy like songs with heavy bass from a saxaphone would kill my head. Guitar distortion and trance/house music are fine with me though. Lyrics and vocals could have an effect to me as well, but those would have to be really bad to keep me away. I'm a little too picky when it comes to what music I can enjoy. =pp I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
I can handle any song even with bad lyrics as long as it has a good rhythm to it. I for one hate R&B more than country, they sing about loving someone but I can't help but hate them.
Thats just me What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

I have a hard time finding good black metal. One for the lyrics, two, because there is just all-around bad recording done with them. Not as dynamic as it should be. The lyrics are just ridiculous. No other music scene do you find the entire genre just based on hatred, much less a specific hatred. But whatever, to each their own.
Rap & Hip-Hop are also very picky for me. It comes right down to the song. I have no idea what band it is but a lot of people play them around here, it just consists of this really shitty singer wailing in a cracked voice because he's too talentless to actually sing, combined with a disgustingly over-simplified classic blues rock beat. Please give me the Allman Brothers instead, kthx. Also lyrics in techno. You either have them, or you don't. Please don't ruin a good techno song by sticking some stupid, senseless, meaningless phrase right in the middle. Meaning in lyrics doesn't really bother me unless its just ALL solely hate, anger, etc. Then it's like.....get a life. Emo. Now there are lyrics that bother me. Not to mention most emo bands can't play anything, much less their guitars, worth a shit. I really do NOT care that your girlfriend dumped you for your plastic diaper fetish. So yeah I guess I kind of contradicted myself there, but for the most part, meaning doesn't matter. In fact I almost prefer everything to be in a different language.
