iPod or iRiver

I already have a Rio Karma which is perfect for every other situation besides the mobile one. Because it's fucking huge, and it doesn't connect to my computer anymore [like every single other Rio product I've purchased before] but since I got it for $185 and it holds 20GB, it's more than enough for long car rides and all of that jazz.

But I need a mobile mp3 player. I need the kind that I can walk around in, and bring everywhere with me just so I dont' get bored in the many boring situations that life brings. I'll be living in NYC pretty soon and I'm going to be walking around EVERYWHERE and the iPod nano seems perfect for what I'm looking for. It's just SO small and beautifully shaped, perfect, really. I'm not looking for anything big, a 1GB model suits my needs. I was hoping by now it'll come down to atleast $100, but it's still like $150... I can find it on newegg for like $140, which is... disappointing because it's NEWEGG for god's sake.

But I saw in an ad for J&L [this electronics store] that they were selling a 1GB model of an iRiver for $120. Now I've seen an iRiver before, one of my friend's has one. And it looks REAL cool. I always labeled it as one of those foreign Korean products that are unecessarily expensive and not worth its value in aesthetics alone. Though I can't help but think about it because it's out of the ordinary [somewhat, since EVERYONE and their mother has an iPod... the iRiver will be more unique, something I always treasured about things. Plus it's mp4, which is a step above the mp3 capabilities of the iPod. But it's bigger and bulkier than the nano... so that's a turnoff.

Currently, I'm pretty dead-set on the iPod nano. I'd like to see where I can find a black one for a good price. 1GB is fine, but a bigger size for a better value will always be appreciated. Any other places I can find good deals for it?

And what about the iRiver? Worth it?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

The iPod nano will pretty much cost the same everywhere, that's a given, unless you find some crazy deal.

Also, the iPod plays MP3, AAC (MP4 audio), AIFF/WAV, and Apple Lossless, as well as the Audible audiobook format. Not just MP3.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I found a 2GB iPod nano for $130, free shipping.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Nice price, but I'm guessing it's a refurb, though? You can get $20 off of the price of a new iPod nano if you're a college student...the extra $50 might be worthwhile, since you'll get a fresh battery, accessories, and no scratches, and the Apple Store is a lot more trustworthy than some iffy eBay dealer.

I bought a 4GB iPod nano not long after they were released, and I absolutely love the thing. I use it constantly, when I'm on the bus, riding my bike to the store (how dangerous, and without a helmet no less!), or walking to classes. The battery life is quite decent, the control layout is perfect, and iTunes works very well as an audio manager and as a player. My only complaint is that they do scratch very easily, so you'll probably want to pick up a case for it ASAP, though that's not nearly as big of a problem as it was when I bought mine.

I ordered the 2GB black iPod nano from apple's website... refurbished. I think it's a wonderful deal, I got it for $140 [tax was like $11, what the fuck] and I'm just awaiting its delivery.

For those of you who are interested, the iRiver jumped in price to $119 [from $109] which is still a good deal. Here:
