Craving a good historical adventure/romance...

Hi kids. I just watched The Count of Monte Cristo for the first time yesterday and I absolutely loved it. It satisfied a craving I've had for a while for a good adventure full of romance, betrayal, revenge, swordplay, and British accents. Now I want more of it. Whether it be a book or a movie I am interested in anything with that kind of essence. Anything from the French Revolution era...or maybe a good pirate story...I don't know. Something. A good historical adventure. So far I've added The Count of Monte Cristo (the book), The Three Musketeers, and the Man in the Iron Mask to my list. They're all by Alexandre Dumas because he's the only author I can find who's written this kind of story. So, if anyone has any other recommendations (I'm also interested in the medieval era, and the American Revolution), post them here. Thanks.

Also...I was reading about a book called "A Rose in the Crown" recently, by Anne Easter Smith. Has anyone read that book, or any of her work, who can give me an idea of how good she is? Thanks again.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

One thing you should know about 'The Count of Monte Cristo' (the book) is that there is 5 times more depth to it than the film. The book is over 800 pages long so you are probably expecting this.

I watched the film after reading the book and although the film is entertaining the experience is completely eclipsed by the epic novel.

There is also an abridged format of the book which I strongly reccomend you avoid at all costs.

I have read a few Dumas books and I believe they are consistently well written and a joy to read. However when I got round to reading 'The Knight of Maison Rouge', however good it was: I was beggining to tire of the Romantic adventure format.

I would really reccomend 'The Black Tulip' which is fairly short ( about 230 pages). It is this length that pretty much gaurantees that you will not get bored of this fast moving story. I got through this book in a few days, it may of even been one weekend.

'The Count of Monte Cristo' was exceptional though, the story was told with such elegance that even by 800+ pages I didn't want it to end.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Yeah, I second avoiding the abridged version. Then you might as well just watch the movie. Definitely get the full-length book.

Nothing by Dumas was better than The Count, I think.

If you want to read another very good French Revolutionary war-era book, I suggest Les Miserables. It's written by Victor Hugo, who also wrote The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The Hunchback would be good too. Lots of adventure/romance around that era.

Just for fun, one of the better non-fiction books I've read about the time is Retreat from Moscow: The Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne, which was a retelling of Napoleon's failed march into and retreat from Russia in 1812.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'd recommend 'Barry Lyndon'. It's not one of Kubrick's best, but it's still a damn fine film.
