Setting up a wireless network
Okay so I've bought a Belkin F5D7633 ADSL modem/router and a Belkin F5D7051 USB wireless adapter.
The router is setup via ethernet cable which plugs into the back of my PC and the USB adapter is plugged into the back of my brother's PC. So far I have the internet working perfectly, forwarded ports etc so Bit-Torrent is working well. Now I want to try and setup a network between the two computers so we can share files and perhaps later setup a printer to share as well. My PC has Windows XP with SP2 and my brothers simply has Windows XP. How should I go about doing this? |

the rest of the setup is software. am i missing something? share a folder, give it a simple name like test or something go to the other computer and click start, run, and type: \\othercomputername\sharename (replaceing othercomputername and sharename with real names.) also, try pinging one computer from the other by IP address. eg. 'ping 192.168.0.12' if it works the you have already got your network up. if not, post what happends here. |
Hehe, got it to work. I just had to run the wizard on both computers and now it's fine :) Thanks for the help though.

ok.. if you're not using simple file sharing, you can get to the administrative shares (//x.x.x.x/C$) and you'll have full access to the other hard disk!
though.. i bet your brother doesn't want you to have full access, and vice versa :) |
Ah, might not be a bad idea. We don't have much that we don't mind each other seeing ... yet :p
So it's just //router ip/C$ ? Or have I got that wrong |
Not router IP, computer IP.
|
and its '\' not '/'
also, i dont think that will work unless you both have the same password. i just tryed it and it asked for a password on my network. |
If it prompts you for a password, all you have to do is in the user field, type "computername\username" and then in the password field, the password {obviously}. You will be using the computer name of the computer you are connecting to, and the username of an authorized account on that computer {such as an admin account}.

anyway, you could set up usernames on each others' computers. make a username of (your main username & password) on the other person's computer as administrator and vice versa, and it won't ask for a password. my laptop and pc have their usernames / passwords set up on each other, and while i don't use the "desktop account" directly on the laptop, i can log into the laptop with the desktop account from the desktop with no hassle. |
