Best site for domain name reigstration

I wanna registrate some domains and don't know which sites are good an inexpensive. First I discovered www.domain.com which is just awful expensive (over 70$ for a 2 year .com registration). Why is it so expensive anyway??? Then I saw www.1and1.com where I onlyhave to pay 5.99$ per year for a .com domain. Do you think that's a good deal?

thanks

There is no reason for you to pay more than $10 a year for a domain name. That 1and1.com deal sounds decent, or you might want to go with something well-known like godaddy.com.

Edit: wrong forum?

Not speaking from personal experience, but I hear alot of people use and recommend godaddy.

But most good web hosting providers should give you a free domain anyway with one of thier packages.

Moving this out of Media Centre (where it doesn't belong) to General Discussion (where it's still borderline, but fits better).

www.powerpipe.com is the place I go to. It's cheap as hell and works very well. $8 per year for a domain name.

Thanks!
Godaddy seems good to me and they have an option to turn of the display of personal information when you register a domain (why is this even happening? I think that could be pretty dangerous). Is there also a way to get an own email domain without changing my current accound?
