Speedruns

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedrun

Quote:

A speedrun is a play-through of a computer or video game, in which the whole game or a select part of it, such as a single level, is played with the intent of completing it as quickly as possible, optionally with certain prerequisites, such as collecting every item available. The term is only used in the context of games that were not originally or primarily designed with time-squashing in mind; one generally does not "speedrun" in a racing game (in those cases the game's standard setting for achieving and recording fast times is called a time attack or time trial mode [1]). Both speedrunning and time attacking are often practiced competitively in Internet-based communities.

There are two big subgenres of speedruns: unassisted or regular speedruns [2], and tool-assisted speedruns. Unassisted speedruns are done in real-time using only whatever features there were in the actual game and the original hardware, while tool-assisted speedruns also use features found outside the game in order to create the movie, such as the "save-state" feature found in emulators.

I'm currently trying my best at a speedrun for the SNES game Dino City.

Just wait until you see my new Legend of Mana speedruns. I've got them sent off, but not quite posted yet. I did like about 53 minutes of improvements over what's already on Speed Demos Archive. ^^;;

Good luck with Dino City.

I'll try and get a screenshot, as I managed to complete the first act of Sonic 2 in about 40 seconds. There are people faster than that I know, but I was proud of it.

Emerald Hill Zone, Act 1 0:20 20.11.05 Nathan Jahnke

Rookie. Come on, get down further.

haha. I could do barely 21 secs but not 20. Whoever did that is good.

edit: on the original console, mind you - the "tool-assisted" tool of a speedrun does it in something like 15 mins or so.

I catch myself doing a speed run of Super C every now and then, but I've never actually timed it. Think I'll do that next time and see what I get.

I could do the Azure Lake race on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in around 28 seconds, though I suppose that doesn't quite fall under this category since that's a race.

EDIT: From the first frame of the chopper in the beginning to the start of the staff roll, I got 19'47" for Super C. Not anything like the 12'39" on NESVideos, but under 20 minutes without tools is good enough for me. :)

I saw a video of someone doing all of Super Metroid (my favorite game speedrun wise) in 38 minutes. They weren't bot assisted or hacked. The guy made mistakes a number of times (usually wall jumps). Probably kept them in there to show it was a real human and not a computer behind the wheel playing.

Pretty intense, if you ask me.

I sent two Alien Soldier videos to www.speeddemosarchive.org that will probably be going up on the site sooner or later that can be mildly entertaining. They're actually already available for download from www.super-play.co.uk if you're interested.

Other then that there was my Bangai-O time attack, the times I set in F-Zero X and GX, and a couple stages I did in Mischief Makers. A bunch of those videos are up at my little video site, www.mrmonkeyman.com/videos.

What an exciting first post.

I ran through RE4 in about 2hrs time, was really bored with that game after that.

Hmmmm, now that I think of it...120m doesn't seem quick.:ashamed:

RushJet1 Mar 3, 2006 07:12 AM

i can beat mega man 3 very quickly, usually within 45 minutes or so, though i've never actually tried to run through it as fast as possible (i usually never use anything but the standard plasma cannon on everything).

i can also rush through a lot of the other mega mans, but mega man 3 is probably the one i've played most.

also, i feel like i did a run through metroid fusion the second time around-- 1 hour and 48 minutes or something? damn that game was short.

That was awesome! :D

This is probably gonna sound geeky as hell but back during the N64 era, some buddies and I had massive Mario Kart battles which of course invovled taking bet$. What kept the matches lively was the use of the Top Gun soundtrack supplied by the DJ. :p

LOL different videos.

What's mindblowing is how close it was. They both got it within the same second, it was sick. I loved the cheering in the background whenever one did a spectacular manouver (like that jump at the beginning of 8-2 OMFG).
