Look for buddies to play games here. Suggest games people can play here, discuss games, whatever.

MAME plays online?

Details please.

Magic Jun 30, 2006 04:02 PM

I've never done this, but you can use Kaillera to play MAME online. Not sure how good it is. I'll be willing to give it a shot at some point, though not at the moment.

As for suggestions, it all depends on whether you're up for competitive play or cooperative play. Does Kaillera allow for more than 2 players?

Versus:
Street Fighter Anything
King of Fighters Anything
Twinkle Star Sprites(Neo-Geo)

Co-op:
Bubble Bobble (one of them is four player)
Salamander (like Gradius)
1942
Metal Slug (when you have lots of time)
Dungeons & Dragons (either one)
not The Simpsons Arcade Game (it's just boring with infinite credits)

Grawl Jun 30, 2006 05:14 PM

Yes Kailerra. Used it to play with Juan, no lag whatsoever. I believe it supports up to 4 players, not sure.

Summonmaster Jun 30, 2006 06:56 PM

4 Player Support present, although the teamng feels rather arbitrary in games like KoF and MvC.

Don't we all have to have the same version or something? I remember when playing with my friends, we'd always run into some silly kinds of trouble with versions of emulators, and if not, versions of roms.
That's why I still keep HKaillerav14, and mame0.32ac since different versions seem to be able to play different games.
Eg. KoF2002 only seems to work on the 0.32 version :(

Competitive
---
Asura Blade
Darkstalkers 2/3
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Pocket Fighter/Gem Fighter
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Samurai Showdown series
Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo 2
Twinkle Star Sprites (HIGHly seconded!) :)

Coop
---
Metal Slug
Simpsons

A bunch of us who normally inhabit #rtfo began playing MAME a lot, mostly the fighters like MvC or X-men vs Street Fighter.

Hard finding a server that's relatively lag-free for everyone, though -- especially if some people aren't even in the same continent.

The main problem is that if you have dialup, you won't be enjoying the game a lot. Trust me on this.

Still, sounds like a nifty idea, we just have to set an emulator for everyone who wants to participate. I have a hacked version of 0.64 for running KoF2002 and SvC.

Any links or whatever where we can get it?

And, it works perfectly fine and all that?

Monkey King Jul 1, 2006 05:28 PM

Every version of MAME sporting Kaillera appears to have such support hacked into it, so it would be helpful to establish early on which version everyone is to be using. A lot of these versions are pretty old, so it would be helpful to establish which ones are worth using the most.

Damn I love that site. You can get all the roms there except for the CHD's of course. There may be a small wait, but their list is updated in conjunction of MAME releases. Current MAME32 release is v0.106.1, and that's the one I use. That should be the MAME of choice, unless you know how to use DOS and work you way around.

Wakatu Jul 2, 2006 01:03 PM

MAME is awesome, although I used to play it on kaliLOLlera or whichever it was called, never really had a problem with lag back then. It kinda sucked because mostly everyone would play only MvC or some fighter game so when you wanted a 4 player adventure side scroll game, no one was up to it =(, although the 2v2 MvC was pretty fun.

Games:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
X-Men
Xenophobe
Alien Vs Predator
Dungeons And Dragons
Metal Slug
Any Neo-Geo Fighters
MvC
DoDonPachi, Dangun Feveron, Etc...

Summonmaster Jul 2, 2006 02:05 PM

:( No one ever seems to go on #mame, or I'm coming it at the wrong times.

What are some notable four player sidescrollers other than the Metal Slug series?
D&D has popped up several times, but I keep thinking of text adventure and ten-sided dies when D&D comes up.

Magic Jul 2, 2006 08:50 PM

It's essentially a beat'em-up. Each character is a generic race/class combo from D&D (human fighter, elven mage, etc.), you get various items and spells to use, and the paths branch at various points in the adventure. It's certainly deeper than your average arcade game (although a bit disappointing when you realize that Experience Points are just points).

Grawl Jul 4, 2006 01:45 PM

I'm surprised no one mentioned King of Fighters yet.

Eh, it's implied anyways. I haven't seen a single main server without someone itching for KoF. It's usually the same people too >_>
Come on people! I'm itching for KoF >_>

Luxo Jul 5, 2006 11:25 PM

I suck at KOF, so no. Also, give me a day or two and I'll post the MAME I told you guys about.

I've been playing on Kaillera for more than 5 years, and any 0.64 version based on MAME32k is still the best around. Later versions have a very laggy GUI at best (at least in my case). Downside is, almost 1000 games from the new versions won't be playable on it, so yeah, it's more of a MAME for people with old collections of roms.

Grawl Jul 6, 2006 12:25 PM

We (= me, Juan, Lacerta) use 0.64 too, so it's fine.

Heh, that just got my attention; its been a long time since I use to play the KOF games, several formats and a good half-dozen mmo's back. I'll see if I can dig up myself a copy of one of the better mame releases and the kof games (98/00/02 were my favourite) and see if I can get a game going with any of your guys... that is inbetween all these old psx rpg's I just picked up.

Be warned however, I was the champ at the uni arcade back in the day. How well that converts to a keyboard will probably be another story. :sneaky:
