Do you wear eyeglasses?

Just wondering guys, I'm sure you spend a lot of time in front of your monitor. I suppose some of you must be wearing eyeglasses as well since we abuse our eyes, or perhaps you like me, not wearing eyeglasses though have spend a lot of time in front of pc?

I also wondering why I havent worn any eyeglasses since childhood, though I spend most of my time in front of monitor. My friend said it's actually genetic inheritance. My grandpa, my grandma, my mom, and my father actually wear eyeglasses, strangely only me and my sis are the only ones who dont wear them. Well It's not like I want to wear one.

Kairyu Jun 17, 2006 06:45 AM

I wear eyeglasses. And no, its not those huge bifocals.
Though, I don't think its because I look at a monitor alot. Its because I'm slightly near-sighted (20/20 vision in my left eye and 20/40 in my right eye.) In a classroom setting I don't really need them, I can see just fine across a whole room/auditorium. Its main use is mostly for driving, seeing a speed limit sign 75 feet away is a little challenging >.>

Radez Jun 17, 2006 07:10 AM

Heh, I have bifocals. People still ask me "why are your glasses so scratched?"

I've had eyeglasses since I was four, so it's got nothing to do with the computer (although the computer probably doesn't help). I was an extremely premature baby, and was given pure oxygen at birth, which apparently messed up my eyes. I'm not complaining, though, because it could have just made me blind instead. ^^;

My right eye is also much, much worse than my left eye. I forget the exact figures, but it gets pretty ridiculous in eye tests when I can read fairly well with one eye and can't see shit with the other.

Shit, the above post was me again. I'm really sorry; it won't happen a third time.

I've worn glasses since first grade. I was extremely nearsighted and my eyesight got worse and worse every year until it finally reached the point where I was legally blind. Eight years ago I had laser surgery on my eyes because I was going to have to wear contacts and glasses, since no one made contacts that were strong enough for me.

I had 20/20 vision until a couple of years ago (boy was that strage thing to get used to) when my vision started to slip a little. My eyes aren't bad now...I think they're 20/40 or so, and I can elect to not wear my glasses if I'm hiking or swimming or going somewhere where I have to dress up.

Dekoa Jun 17, 2006 09:09 AM

I don't know how bad my eyes are but I do know that I wear glasses all the time. I'm nearsighted and I can survive without my glasses; however, I can't read the monitor in front of me if I take off my glasses and I like to see clearly when I can so I keep them on all the time. It's not so bad really. I just hope that I don't have to go to the laser surgery.

Why not? I don't wear glasses, but I don't have perfect eyesight either, and if I could have laser surgery (for free) to correct that, I would do it.

Wojo Jun 17, 2006 09:54 AM

I wear glasses at sometimes. Usually when I am at home. When I'm out Ill wear contacts. I hope to get lasik surgery though at sometime.

Schadenfreude Jun 17, 2006 09:55 AM

I don't know the exact figures, but I guess my eyesight isn't all that good. My astigmatism is quite high, that much I know. I've been wearing glasses for the past 10 years or so, and I can't really survive all that long without them. Yeah, I take them off occasionally but I just prefer to leave them on whenever I can.

I've seen the laser surgery process video and it makes my eyes hurt. :/

Also for the record I wear glasses too. >_>

Belladonna Jun 17, 2006 10:08 AM

Unfortunately yes. I hate glasses. They get dirty, they break, they make me look like an idiot.

starslight Jun 17, 2006 10:08 AM

I do. I have refractive ambylopia (a wide disparity in visual acuity between the two eyes) - my right eye was nearly 20/20, and my left was about 20/60. I had surgery done to repair a muscle in my left eye when I was four which makes it impossible for me to wear contacts, so I wear glasses mainly for my left eye.

I've only been wearing them about three years, though, after an eye exam in high school. I can live without them, but I end up with a headache after a while. I don't mind wearing them - I'm a pretty ugly dude to begin with, so it doesn't really matter how they make me look.

Acro-nym Jun 17, 2006 10:45 AM

I don't really know how to answer. My eyes are in a condition in which I need to wear glasses for only a few things, mainly reading something far away. As such, I usually don't wear them. So... I need to wear eyeglasses, but choose not to wear them. Yep. Definitely not sure how to answer.

Snowknight Jun 17, 2006 10:47 AM

Yes, I wear eyeglasses; I got mine sometime near the end of sixth grade, which was only so because I noticed my ability to read the chalkboard at school plummeting rapidly.

People tell me that I should use contacts instead, but I've grown too accustomed to glasses. I would also be afraid of poking my eyes out when putting them in.

Alice Jun 17, 2006 10:51 AM

Contacts are a pain in the ass. I know, since I wore them for years.

Lasik surgery is a wonderful thing. Oh, and by the way - it doesn't hurt at all.

eriol33 Jun 17, 2006 10:52 AM

I dont really suggest you to wear contact lenses... I heard they might be melted if you are too close with fire or heat source. You might get permanent blindness if not careful. >_>

Little Shithead Jun 17, 2006 10:55 AM

I hear staring at the sun for too long can give you permanent blindness, too.

Can anyone confirm this.

Alice Jun 17, 2006 10:55 AM

Don't forget how prone contact lens wearers are to eye infections. My cousin went blind in one eye because he didn't clean his properly.

Vemp Jun 17, 2006 11:00 AM

No, I don't. But somehow, wearing eyeglasses has become a fashion fad in my area. Silly mortals.

Schadenfreude Jun 17, 2006 11:10 AM

Fashion fad, eh? I honestly feel some people look better with glasses on. Or totally different. Sometimes both.

My dad and I have this odd little ability. We both wear glasses (his are thicker than mine) and we are both somewhat into graphics. The ability deals with our eyes. We both have the same type of eyesight were we can't read at far distances, however, when we look at photos, print quality, or details very closely, we see them with excrutiating detail. It's very useful! The reason on why I wouldn't want to get the Laser Surgery. My father explained this to the eye doctor and he said that the laser would take that ability away from us.

Musharraf Jun 17, 2006 11:16 AM

I used to wear glasses, now I wear contacts and I got pretty much used to it. I am planning to wear color contacts someday, that must be cool (you know, like that guy from Last Action Hero).

My father wears glasses, so I guess it's because of that.

Oh and laser surgeon is still pretty expensive here in Germany since medical insurance won't pay for it.

ava lilly Jun 17, 2006 12:28 PM

I'm actually the only person in my family who doesn't wear glasses or contacts. both of my brothers got their glasses while they were still in elementry school. I'm not sure when my dad got his, but my mom told me she didn't get hers 'til later on in her twenties. I may still need them, but for now my eyesight is perfectly fine.

I look too much like a secretary or teacher with glasses on anyways.

Koneko Jun 17, 2006 12:35 PM

I forget exactly what my eyesight is other than far-sighted and I have an astigmatism in my left eye. I'll wear my glasses most of the time but occasionally I won't wear them. I prefer them over contacts because I see them as more convienent.

Spatula Jun 17, 2006 12:36 PM

I wear this.

I am nearsighted, I think. Basically things that are near are easy to see, and far away objects get blurry. I have a -3.50 for my left and -2.75 for my right eye, if my memory serves me well. I've been wearing glasses since grade 10, so for about 6 years now.

I like how the cost of the frames themselves basically net the same cost as a core Xbox 360 in Canadian. :tpg:

Spoiler:
I also like how my benefits plan from work covers for this, plus a bit on prescription.
