So, there has been a bit of speculation of late as to a Final Fantasy 7 remake. EGM recently made an off-the-cuff comment about the E3 demo precluding an actual remake, causing SquareEnix to respond by basically refusing to confirm the existence of anything.

Just today, IGN posted an article talking about the fact that Best Buy is taking preorders for a Final Fantasy 7 remake.

Well, here's my take on the situation as it stands.

IGN's original article about EGM's comment, and Square-Enix's response with:

"Since the FINAL FANTASY VII tech demo at E3 2005, there have been a lot of rumors about the presentation hinting at an actual remake. While the June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms the remake for release in 2007, Square Enix has never stated this.

We have however confirmed that development has begun for Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII on PlayStation 3. These titles are part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project which also includes a mobile game titled FINAL FANTASY Agito XIII."

Now, anyone fluent in legalise should recognize that just because they have not confirmed it in an official sense doesn't mean it isn't there. Just a month or two earlier, rumors were flying (from EGM, no less) that FFXIII was going to be premiered at E3, causing Square-Enix to respond with:

"While there have been numerous rumors about Final Fantasy XIII," the email began, "Square Enix has never released any information about the title. The recent online article stating that the title will be exclusive for PlayStation 3 and shown at E3 is not based on any official information obtained by us. I hope readers will remember April Fool's day is tomorrow and many Print and Online outlets pull pranks ever year, before they get their hopes crushed by a joke."

Sounds suspiciously close to their statement given about FF7. So while it's not a confirmation of a remake's existence, I certainly wouldn't count it out completely.
