[NFL-Steelers] Roethlisberger in motorcycle accident
Jay Williams, Kellen Winslow Jr. and now Ben Roethlisberger!? This is ridiculous. These young guys think that they're invincible and untouchable. It's idiotic and moronic to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. Some of these guys shouldn't be riding one at all. All I can say is that I hope Big Ben has a speedy recovery and that his injuries aren't serious or career-ending. He should have taken Bill Cowher's and Terry Bradshaw's advice.
Yes this is all over the news channels around here now. Big Ben got shit for not wearing a helmet since he first came to Pittsburgh. I have to agree with bishop. It is just plain stupid to not wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Especially if you are a professional athlete.
I do wish for a speedy recovery and I pray to God he learns from this. |
Fuck. I heard about this in the middle of the school day. Just... fuck.
Some reports say he messed up his knees pretty bad.
Yeah, I heard about this when it broke. Even after Bill Cowher talked to him about it some time ago, he still insisted on not wearing a helmet. Now, he has a broken jaw, which according to what I've heard takes 6-7 weeks of rehab, so he won't miss much if anything.
He'll miss more than 6-7 weeks IMO. Depending on the outcome of the injuries he could probably miss up to 12 weeks.
Because if he needs his jaw wired shut he's going to lose a lot of weight and he'll need to get back in football shape. Plus we don't know the other injuries like his knees his hips, etc. Who knows in cases like this. They could do MRI's tomorrow and find out he has a torn ACL. You always have to be on the safe side and check everything. |
True, but thats all the early prognostication we're getting. About 12 weeks until the regular season starts, so he might be back just in time.
Way to be.
I knew he jinxed himself with that interview with ESPN a few months ago about the whole motorcycle thing. But yeah, like everyone said, all over the news - and of course all over ESPN. Cowher has to be pissed. Still, broken jaw and nose - not a way to spend the offseason. The Steelers are going to be all over his ass about wearing a helmet from now on. |
Well, after 7 hours of surgery, the injuries don't seem to be as severe as once thought. The doctors said that the only known injuries right now are those to his jaw and nose. He didn't say anything about his knees, so that is very good news for him. This is going to be a long process but hopefully he will be ready to go for the regular season. I have a gut feeling that he will be.

He was riding this:
http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2006/football/...orcycle_ap.jpg Without a helmet? What a stupid ass squid. And why doesn't his contract have a clause that prohibits him from riding motorcycles? Serves him right for not wearing da frozin magic shell on his nutz. |

Really, it's not too bad. I'm sure he'll only ride with a helmet in the future, and this accident turned out a lot better than it could have been. |
I dunno if wearing a helmet will help much when the other guy was at fault "allegedly." I gave up street riding for that exact reason. I trust my skills while riding within my ability, I just don't trust those around me.
And I've heard that the motorcycle that he was riding is one of the fastest legal motorcycles in the state. Has anyone heard any estimation of how fast he was going?
Ben had the green light to go from what I've heard. It the 62 year-old woman thats supposedly at fault. A painful lesson learned.
Ben's now out of the hospital, with no wiring in his jaw. Just lots of screws and metal plates!
Hopefully he uses a helmet from now on, if he rides at all.

He was supposed to wear a helmet.
"Roethlisberger to be cited By DANIEL LOVERING, Associated Press Writer 4 hours ago PITTSBURGH - Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be cited for not wearing a helmet and not having a motorcycle license after an accident last week left him with a concussion, broken jaw and nose. Roethlisberger and the driver of the car he crashed into on June 12 both had the green light, but the driver of the vehicle will be cited for failing to yield, police said Monday. Only licensed cyclists can ride without a helmet in Pennsylvania. Roethlisberger was traveling 35 mph in a posted 35 mph zone, said officer Dan Connolly. There were no mechanical problems with Roethlisberger's Suzuki Hayabusa or the Chrysler New Yorker, he said. Police Chief Dominic Costa said the woman driving the car received some threatening phone calls, which police were investigating. Roethlisberger had seven hours of surgery to repair his broken jaws and other facial bones. Doctors have said tests showed no brain injuries, although there was a mild concussion. He also lost two teeth and chipped several others. He was discharged Wednesday night from Mercy Hospital and apologized to the team, his fans and family in a statement released Thursday. He also said that he would wear a helmet if he rode a motorcycle again." |
