Upgrade to Pentium M?
 

Hey everyone, I have a question about upgrading a CPU on a tablet PC I just won on Ebay.
The product
this thing comes with a Celeron M 740 processor.
Basically, I want to know if there will be any significant problems if I purchase a Pentium M 740 processor and switch it out.
Or for that matter, would it even be needed?

I think the most CPU intensive stuff that I might be running on this thing will be either Reason 3.0, or some synthesizer software, in conjunction with the Adobe PDF viewer. (no gaming)

Uh, it being a laptop, you're not able to change the processor. At all.

See, thats not true.
I had a friend who pretty much did the same thing, but with a Dell laptop.
It worked perfectly afterwards. I am just hoping that his wasn't a unique case.
I don't know if it voided the warrantee though.

It's very possible to change the processor. First thing you may want to find out is if the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, or if it is interchangable. You should also find out if your Celeron M is Socket 478 or 479 because, from what I've read, they come in both flavors.

I would search around on the net for your model of tablet to see if anyone else has tried this sort of thing. For all we know, that processor may be incompatible. If all else fails, contact the manufacturer to see if swapping the chip is feasible.

Also, it WILL void the warranty.

Well, you are getting it off EBay, I think Warranty is probably gone by now....

EDIT: Nevermind, I finally clicked on the link after posting this.

Anyways, it is indeed possible to replace processors. You just need to make sure that you buy the right one and that that particular notebook doesn't have the CPU rooted to the Mobo. You can replace just about anything except for the Mobo and the CPU in some models.

I called in to Gateway, and they said that the CPU is embedded on the motherboard. :\ Which means that any attempts to change the processor will be met with SEVERE violations of the warantee agreement. :p
