Sticky clickly PS2 R1/2 L1/2 buttons
 

I've been playing MGS3 again and while I try to switch weapons with the R2/L2 buttons, it seems to be clickly quite loudly, and sometimes it doesn't register that I'm actually pressing the button. The controller is about 3 to 4 years old and is the first party PS2 controller.

So does anyone else have issues with their PS2 controller?

Yeah, a similar thing just started happening to me while playing Ace Combat 5 the other day. It's kinda frustrating since I never throw my controllers or do any of that kind of stuff to it. =\

I have found that taking the controller apart and reseating all of the buttons can help issues like this out, since my one friend busted his X button and I was able to fix it that way (the sensor thing was off-centered, so it couldn't feel the button press).

yeah same thing for me, my R2 and L2 get kind of stuck and I have to push harder and it does kind of a click sound too ... well I'll probably wait because I might take a ps3 at the end of the years...

bu t if you tell me that it's really easy to repair that, I might try, but i dont want to get it worst XD

I have a launch ps2 controller that has been used alot and it still doesn't have any of these clicking issues you described. The analog stick is a little off, though.

My X button sticks somewhat on my second controller, which obviously sucks because it's THE button. Fortunately, not debilitating, since I just press it repeatedly and maybe wiggle it around a touch if it sticks, so that it loosens up and and doesn't stick.

The R1 and L1 buttons stuck on my clear-blue PS2 controller that I've had for a while, however due to gaming excessively a year or so ago it has since died (RIP).

I don't even understand why the R1 and L1 buttons stuck, I never pressed the buttons down hard enough to force them to get stuck.

Mine has been bothering me lately with fighting games, because my R1 will sometimes get stuck inside the controller, and I'll have to pause and wiggle it back and forth until it pops back out. It's my original controller, came with one of the very first launch systems, so I guess issues are inevitable, but I've decided to use it until it breaks.

Side note: the cord is also twisted up inside the cord casing, which probably isn't good. Comes from years of winding up the cord to take the system to friends' houses. Anybody know a way around this?

My PS2 controller has about five and a half years worth of crud trapped under the shoulder buttons. Sometimes they'll stick down, especially the R2 button. Once they even jumped out and stood in front of the PS2 with signs proclaiming how I've treated them is a crime against humanity.

So far my controller hasn't given too much problems as of late, but I honestly think I might need to get another one just in case... (PS2 controllers taken off shelves once PS3 comes, NOooOO!!! but I doubt this would really happen).

I have problems with the left analog sticks of both my controllers. They're like crooked or something, because sometimes the character on screen will start moving by itself, and you have to fiddle with the stick to get it back to normal. It hasn't gotten to the point where I can't play my games anymore, but I'll probably have to get some new controllers sooner or later.

I've never had that problem even after ridiculous hours of fighting/shooting/gaming with mine. I did buy another one earlier this year, though, because I tried to clean my original and couldn't reposition the shoulder buttons properly without them clicking.

My Logitech Wireless controller has some Square button issues. Sometimes it just sticks for no reason, probably because this button is the most abused one since I press square for like.. a lot.

Left analog stick on mine has been acting up, Usually its just the usual wear and tear, I mean I have had mine for about 3 years now

Something has broken inside of my PS2 pad in the R shoulder button region and occasionally gets jammed in between the two buttons. These buttons don't feature too much in some of the games I play but when it gets stuck the pad has to be shaken to get it unstuck. I could open it up but just now we do not have the necessary tools. Sometimes the R1 buttons gets fully jammed in, this usually occurs when I am playing Pro Evolution Soccer. I think the thing inside was broken within the first six months of buying it. Really poor quality.

All you need to take your controller apart is a Phillips screwdriver (the ones that look like a plus).

Whenever I use the analog stick on my controller it usually gets stuck in place. And my R1/R2 buttons you have to press harder down on them then you should have to.

I usually open up my controller from time to time and give it a good cleaning with a damp qutip and clean around the areas that may be dirty from dust or whatever dirt that might get in.It definately helps a lot and is much better then buying another controller

My original PS2 controller seems to still work fine. I have two extras in case something does happen to my main controller, but the buttons don't seem to stick at all. It still functions well despite some slight age and abuse.

Yesterday I just picked up a new controller for $30 and it's black. I did this just incase it should happen that the old controller craps out. Plus it's near time for replacement anyways.

I have 1 PS2 and 1 PS1 controller.
I've had the same issue with the PS1 controller for a while now.
Which is understandable considering how old it is now.
The PS2 controller has had the issue but not as bad.

Went to my friend's house who just brought a new PS2....feels so wierd playing with a brand new controller. The controller was totaly a virgin...

Agreed, it's so smooth and free of palm sweat and the like. Quite a bit less "grip" surprisingly. And it just seems it respons somewhat better.

The response is an improvement, but I've actually had better grip on newer controllers. I have the original one from when the Playstation first came out as well, and that controller felt too "bare" for me without the analog sticks. I couldn't go back to using those.

Another thing I noticed was the WEIGHT difference.

I completely agree on your "Quite a bit less "grip" surprisingly" part though.
Is as if the tracktion is too smooth to have a good grip on at first.

Strangely now, PS controllers sans the analog sticks are very weird looking. So bare, like the analog sticks NEED to be there, or else it doesn't retain that PS controller look. Perhaps its just me that has always owned Dualshock controllers and never the old PS1 ones. Whenever I go to the used section of the store, all the "bare controllers" seem to have that 3rd party look, despite being produced from Sony.
