Quest 64: Who remembers this PIECE?

http://speeddemosarchive.com/gfx/Quest64.jpg

Did anyone actually play this? And if so, did you ever play it again? I remember getting this when it came out and being pretty excited. I guess it kept me busy for a while, but the game was SO linear. After beating it, and being more pissed at its ending than any other game's, I put it away. The thing has NO replay value.

The story was pretty intriguing though, for me at least. You're a magician's apprentice assigned the task of tracking down your missing father and a mysterious book of magic. Throughout the game, I enjoyed the implication that you were always a couple of steps behind him the whole time (a la FF7, but having played Quest first I'm more inclined to be reminded of this game than FF7).

I also liked the levelling-up system, which followed the "the more you use, the better you are at it" policy. This went for HP and MP too. For some reason I prefer this system over the more widespread method of experience points.

Quest 64 is just old enough to inspire some nostalgia.

So. Did anyone play it? Did anyone like it? Overall just about every possible plot point ends up being an utter disappointment.

I thought it was one of the most BORING RPGs in the history of mankind. I think I played to the first boss and that was about it.

Surprisingly, somebody did suffer though the game enough to speedrun it over at speeddemosarchive.com

I am watching that right now.

I'm a giant Nintendo fan but I liked the n64 the least because of its weak, weak RPG's. (despite Kart 64 being the best multi game for its time and arguably the best game that isn't an RPG out at the time).

Technophile Jun 3, 2006 02:43 AM

I clearly remember this game. It's very nostalgic to me. Funny thing is, I never played it but I remember making fun of the damn game often when it first came out just cause it had such a bad rep.

Free.User Jun 3, 2006 02:52 AM

I liked it.... :(

But I think that was because it was the first RPG I ever played, and If I remember correctly, the first game I actually sat down and played.

God you make me feel so old.

This game reminded me of lego sets.

Andrew Evenstar Jun 3, 2006 04:42 AM

hahah omfg, i played this on my uncles console copier for n64 and it sucked. the above poster, i agree n64 sucked balls with rpgs

chato Jun 3, 2006 07:25 AM

This game deserves a remake or a port to the ds XD.

imho, i liked it cause it was the first rpg on n64 for me. The boss battle sounded cool at least XD. The only thing that bothered me was those random battles (this one monster keeps reminding me of Fox Mcloud from Star Fox >.> ) that keep popping out of nowhere and when you have to use healing items.. you have to use it every damn second and you're left with shit.

I never got to beat it.Im only at that Ice Girl fight and from there i stopped playing it.I should give it another try.

kelesis Jun 3, 2006 08:17 AM

Quest 64 is the most creative name for a game ever. And damn was it a bad game.

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 Jun 3, 2006 09:35 AM

I liked it despite the boringness. There's also a GBC port which plays a little better imo.

Goubot Jun 3, 2006 09:37 AM

The N64 at least had Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario. They're not the greatest, but they're at least something. But yeah, the N64 was terrible for RPGs.

Q64 was really boring and linear. I don't think it was mind-bogglingly bad like some other RPGs, though. I do hear that its GBC version is better, which is kinda sad.

All that game did for me was make me realize how much more I enjoyed Ocarina of Time. I think I played it once, got to the first boss, and then never touched the cartrige again.

This was so long ago...

The ice cave was HUEG LIEK XBOX. Only thing that kept me going was that ambient music.

If anyone has the music rip for this game, send me it! :edgartpg:

This game was pretty fucking awful. Boring. Terrible.

But I like it because compared to its piece of shit "sequel", Quest for the GBC, Quest 64 is a fucking gem.

BUT STILL, YUCK.

I do remember this title, It was probably the first title I had ever inserted into my N64 other then Blast Corps and Zelda 64. Sadly though, It was the also the last time I ever put that title in my N64. At the time I WAS too young to fully enjoy the title although I do remember that the battle system was very boring from what I played. I only ever rented this game based on the fact that it looked like a Zelda 64 style game, Sadly it wasn't. Now, I would like to try this again and see if it was based on my young age that I didn't understand it enough to like it, But hopefully it was just lack of entertainment and the use of the boring battle system.

Are you joking? Ogre Battle 64 is flat out amazing. A beautiful, amazing title.

Also, as bad as Quest was, Aidyn Chronicles was worse. Oh god was that game bad.

Gechmir Jun 3, 2006 01:32 PM

I sold my N64 around when this piece of garbage rolled around. The only reason to own an N64 was Mario 64. That was IT in my opinion.

Ogre Battle had a PS1 release which was quite fun. But had glitches ><# But I'll be damned if Ogre Battle isn't one of the finest RPGs ever. I still love it.

I remember seeing this get released and I said to my brother "Ahahaha! Nintendo remembered that they need to make an RPG ;D" Of course, I figured it would be crap just by looking at it. I've developed a sense over the years.

Acacia Jun 3, 2006 02:32 PM

...I still have the godamn overworld music stuck in my head. T_T

I remember me and my brother playing it a lot (in fact, this was probably the first game where I stayed up past 2am to play it). It was years ago, and I was like, 12 at the time.

I kinda enjoyed the game. Bad game overall, but it's quite nostalgic~

Can you even identify what the blur that is?

nanstey Jun 3, 2006 03:53 PM

I rented it to see what it was like - Never got past the first field. It was HORRID. Not until Zelda and Ogre Battle came out did the N64 have any good PRG's.

Actually Zelda WAS the reason this game sucked. It did have great potential, but they rushed it to be out before Zelda came out because they knew they couldn't compete. Sad really.

Conqueso Jun 3, 2006 09:05 PM

I played that game. I remember kind of liking it. Then again, I have pretty low standards when it comes to games--as long as it keeps me occupied, I'm fine with it. So what do I know. I do remember WTFing at the ending though. Shannon's plot line was random liek whoa. And what happened to Brian's dad after all? Did he die or what? Didn't get it at all.

Holy shit, someone else liked the music. I'll second that request. ^_^

Prinnydood Jun 4, 2006 12:06 PM

I played it a long time ago and actually got pretty far. Forgot the boss' name but it was some lady with like a blue background or something...then my brother accidently erased the file heh...

Its a pretty crap game IMO though...every area's the same. Town, forest, cave, repeat. Plus the crappy clown music for the overworld was horrific.
