The pronounciation of 'spatula'.
 

So I was at a department store the other day in the kitchen utensil aisle, looking at well, spatulas. Some ladies walk by and say, "oh look! the spat-too-lahs are on sale, 2 for 1!". I thought to myself, that's a pretty strange way to say 'spatula'. I always pronounced it as "spat-chew-lah".

How do you say this kitchen utensil item word? Also post it in the poll.

Spa - where the "a" is pronounced as in "papyrus"...sort of harshly, and NOT like in "spa"
Choo - sometimes with an exaggerated "oo" or more of a "tch" sound at other times
La - as in "Dracula"

Sometimes I will say "Spat-yoo-lah" or "Spat-tu-la," but mostly I say it "Spat-chew-lah."

I voted for "Spat-chew-lah," but I actually pronounce it as "Spah-chew-lah," with the "a" in "spah" sounding like the "a" in "spat."

As an honor I pronounce your name in a German way of speaking, although I know the normal pronounciation. It's not like I have to use "spatula" that much in our English lessons, so I guess it's alright to make this mistake on purpose. I can't really describe how it sounds, since the English a sounds more like "ey", while the German one sounds like "ah". Whatever.

I pronounce it "spa-too-la." Because that's pretty much how it's spelled.

I also know people who pronounce mature as "mah-too-er" and some who pronounce iron as "eye-ron."

I'm easy to go with Spatch-lah, mybe its because its easier.

Initially I thought you had a bad voice chat with someone using a fucked up variation of the word.

I do it more like this "spa-choo-lah"

Maybe it's a regional dialect for them?

I know the Brits and Americans pronounce garage differently. Though I'm sure why the 'choo' sound in spatula is common because we tend to slur our words when speaking. That and it sounds weird if you say 'spat-ula'.

I pronounce it more like "spa-cha-la," but I chose "spat-chew-lah" because it's the closest to how I pronounce it and it is the way I would say it if I were trying to enunciate (i.e. not sound like a redneck). My speech is very lazy; pronouncing the "chew" properly takes too much effort, so I say "cha" instead.

I say "Spat-chew-lah" as well. I don't think I've heard anyone emphasize the "tu," yet, but lots of people pronounce words differently. A few that also come to mind are "envelope" and "presentation."

I say it spat-chew-lah as well. I never even thought about saying it another way.

"Spat-chew-lah." But when I'm feeling ninja, I go faster and make it two syllables: "Spatch-la." If I was even more powerful, I'd go for one syllable, but writing or saying it would make one's head implode.

I get bored often. And sometimes I'll say things to myself over and over to see how I pronounce them. In spatula's case, I say "SPAH-chuh-luh." The chuh and luh kinda melt together to make a chluh sound, but not quite. *shrug* This reminds me of the car-uh-mel and car-mowl debate
