I don't even know if she's still Commisioner Gordon's daughter. In any case, it's a real gamble to use a character that's familiar to people through non-dedicated syndications and make it gay.

You'd think that they'd create an original character to do the whole gay superhero thing. The presence of a Batwoman sort of necessitates her interaction with Batman, and having Batwoman being the gay is sort of really lame.

Its a new character.
She has been described as "buxom lipstick lesbian."

Yay for shallow concepts

Batwoman is different from Batgirl. Though I know almost nothing about batman, I know Gordon's daughter was paralyzed by the Joker and became bound to a wheelchair.

Yeah, he shot her in the spine and took naked pictures of her in an attempt to drive Gordon insane.

Of course it's going to be a new character. Though, there's not much point in her being a Batwoman if there's no real appreciable connection between her and the Batman. Is Batman a part of her origin story? Who knows? Did we mention she is the gay?

The whole extreme pimpage of the "buxom lipstick lesbian" thing feels more "OMG LOOK AT OUR NEW BATWOMAN! SHE'S GAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYOMG SHE IS SO UNBELIEVABLY GAY READ OUR NEW BOOK CUZ ITS FULL OF DIVERSITY NOW" than something to showcase an actual multileveled many faceted character.

But perhaps I am just too bitter and jaded to really care about all of this in the least bit. =\

While being a new character, Batwoman, and her alter-ego, Kate Kane, is based on the original Batwoman, who was called Kathy Kane. The original Batwoman took up crime-fighting so she could be with Batman, who she was attracted to. Batman, being the fag that he was, pretty much ignored her advances and wished for her to stop crime-fighting cuz a woman's place was in the kitchen.

I love it when companies do shit like this.

"Well we want comics to be taken more seriously as an art medium. Did we mention that our new superhero has huge boobs and is a lesbian? Yeah, she makes out with CHICKS. It's totally wicked awesome."

I can see so many ways this can be abused. "Buxom lipstick lesbian" sounds like code for "hot girl-on-girl action please buy our comixxx" to me.

They cancelled Batgirl for this? Rubbish.

I wonder if this whole lesbian "angle" will actually help sell the comic book.

You know, the last animated Batman movie (or OVA, specifically) focused on Batwoman, whose identity was unknown to even Bats.

It turned out that Batwoman was actually three hot girls who took turns wearing the costume, and lived together while working on fighting crime.

Suddenly I have an incentive to rewatch it.....

Is this sarcasm.

How do you conclude that?

I don't know what was funnier, the media's overhype of this or some of the local people that CNN was interviewing.

Reporter: "Don't you think she's a bit hot to be a lesbian?"
Guy on street: *puts hand on picture, pushing it away* "MY GOD SHE IS LESBIAN I DON'T WANT TO LOOK EVIL EVIL BURN THAT PICTURE UGH SHE MUST DIE!!!!!"

I would say 95%, if not more, of females (I'd say women, but then there's aliens...) are buxom. Why should this new character be any different? Also, this whole character-being-gay concept being used a selling point is somewhat lame. Yes, it might boost sales due to it appealing to horny guys who don't know better and girls who actually are lesbians. However, just in terms of the hero, if this Batwoman is just a female Batman, much like the Batgirls were, it's a waste of the character. We have enough Bat-people. Marvel even has about three characters that are similar. So, really, if DC wants to do this smart, which would be doubtful considering their resent collection of stories, they won't go back down that road.

Well, i think everyone is more focused on her bring a lesbian because its somewhat newsworthy than just a new Batwoman.
And her name is Kate Kane, so she's a new person, who is like Bruce in that she's high society so she has a different backstory than the other Bat-family characters.

Why the big fuss over this? Is it really THAT special?

Gay superheros are nothing new. North Star from Alpha Flight came out of the closet in the early 90s. Batwoman is just - well, who the fuck cares? It ain't TAS and it ain't the Adam West series, so its not like its something the intarweb can to beat off to.

Nope. It's that DC is acting like it is that causes the problem.

Hah, if you're looking for that in a Batman comic you'll be disappointed.
I suppose you can check out Y:The Last Man, where every male on Earth dies except for one guy, leaving him in a world of women. I haven't read it though so i woudn't know whats in it exactly.
