guyinrubbersuit's art thread
Here's some of my stuff, you might've seen some before (I'm skedar_grey remember?). Here are all the current works of mine in this thread.

Hey skedar, haven't seem your stuff for a while. For the human drawings at least, are you using reference for it? And particularly, the girl drawing, are you planning on finishing it? I think the first 3 drawing can use some shading, even if they are concept arts.
|
For the woman, I wouldn't mind finishing it up. I try to use reference when I can, I know I fuck up the proportions sometimes. It really pains me.
|
What Proportion? It isn't an issue of proportion in my opinion, even though that's super hero proportion. >.> So you are not using any reference for it?
|
For the woman, yes I did, otherwise everything else, no.

Here is a piece I did for my Advanced Photoshop class. This isn't the first time I colored in Photoshop, however it is the first I used more of a painting technique. I did a very loose sketch of the figure, scanned it and went to town. Took me around 20 hours I guess over the course of several days.
|
Hmm, I don't remember your other coloring stuff. So I don't really have a point of reference.
The musculature looks really nice. Although for some reason the shading for muscles on the one side just stopped. It feel like the shading doesn't have enough variation, at least as far as I can see, the shading on the skin (of the vampire dude) doesn't feel dark enough, but you had spent 20 hours on this, which shown by the clean edges and the really nice chrome effect you have on the metal parts of his costume. On the highlight, I think, at least on the parts of leather looking belt thingy, you should have choose the color and slowly gradate it until a tinted highlight, instead of the pale white you have now. Hmm, you really need to post more. We don't get a whole lot of traffic around here now-a-days. |

Thank you for the critiques! My fellow class mates weren't any help, however, I wouldn't want to ask help from them. Shading seems to be a problem that I have. That's something I need to work on. I guess the highlight might be a bit much, especially when I just now looked at the point of reference for the belt I used. Here is a piece I painted for a defunt gaming site. This was probably my second or third painting at the time. Painting in general is something I really want to get into. I have some experience with oils, however only with tone, not with hues. |
Tone but not hues? Does that mean you painted monochrome? Well, I know this guy who did a very good tutorial on basic coloring, I thought it might be worth your while to take a read.
http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm Also, if you are digital painting with a tablet, I am recommanding you use a method called light on dark (I think that's what is called?) to color the character, as in, start with the darker shading, sorta between the very highlight and dark shadows, and then paint increment of different shades all over. Hmm, what's a good example of this? |
I agree with Magi on the vampire one. You really need higher value contrast. Your light source is at the upper left of the page, yet there are highlights all over the entire figure. Just go deeper with the contrast on the shadows. It'll add a more dramatic feel to the scene, because as is, the bright pastel looking colors look too happy imo.

I read about using dark to light, but I sort of found that out later in the project, so it was too late for me to change it. It's something I'll do later on. |

Thank you. Bah, I guess ART105 wasn't worth much. Or maybe I just didn't pay attention in there well enough.
|
awesome! who'd you have for 105? Was it Roy? I swear that guy doesn't have a clue how to use Photoshop. The gradiant mapper just blows his mind.
|
Yep it was him. He seems like a nice enough guy. Yeah, anything default Photoshop did was the greatest thing in the world to him.

Something new that isn't a drawing or anything. It's a little animation.
This is Stan Bush - The Touch. I did about a minute of the song for an assignment requirement. I hope to expand upon it next semester. |

Here are some older sketches I've done.
The first on is something I called Spartan. It's just a sketch I did of a spartan warrior. I was bored one day and just started doing it. The next one is called Android Creep. Again I was bored and just let my pencil go where it wanted. The final one is Diving Man. This was done as a practice in perspective and foreshortening. |
For some reason the clothing doesn't seem as if it is conforming to the shape of the body so much, as in this case it looks like the other way around. So the figure looks a bit unbalanced because it looks like he has really tiny hips and small lower bodies. Granted that it doesn't look finished. I do like the shading a lot though.
I like how the creep look. This looks like a perfect chance to practice some shading though. The perspective between the box shape(?) that is in the background and man. He is also seem to be conform to two different angles. The type of stacking on the arms towards the viewer is very very difficult. It'll probably take some practice for one to actually get good at it. The key is to imaging the approximation of the human body as a stack of simple shaped boxes. Dynamic angles can be very challenging, but it could be very fun too. |
Updated the first post with an animation I did back a couple of semesters for Maya animation. It was my first animation and the first time I rigged something.
Anyone know where I can get my Shockwave file hosted? Photobucket is being a bitch and I want show off my new Flash animation I recently did. |

Yeah the whole thing needs work. I'm pleased overall considering that it was my first animation with Maya. It's a little wonky, and I've decided that I really don't like automatic inbetweens. I feel I'm better at it now, which is why I'm going to do animations for a game project next semester.
Here is another animation that I've done, this time with Flash. This was done as a final project and I hand animated it all, except for some scenes that I could reuse. A little rough around the edges, however I like it. Check it out here. |
With any kind of projectiles, you need to use "slow-ins" and "slow-outs" (in and out of keyframes) to simulate acceleration and deceleration. Same with anything under the influence of gravity really (for example arms and legs etc). Can't say i'm too keen on Maya from my initial experiences, but my friend made an animation called "The Wet Pet" several years ago using it so it must be pretty capable.
I really like these two last flash animations you made. It'd be cool if the singing guy moved his head occasionally, but the lip-synch is pretty damn good. |

Some random doodle I did for a game I'd like to make someday. Sometime. Whenever. I was bored and decided to draw it. |

This guy is named Cyro Kylian. He's a character for a made up RPG that I've been working on and off since high school. He's been through a lot of changes and the game idea has gone through some changes as well. My dream is to one day create the game and hopefully make it into a six part series. Right now I'm just trying to nail down a style. I'm trying to go for the hyper detail of FFXII. |
I actually like your rock n roll guy a lot. There doesn't seem to be any problem with how he is standing compare to the current guy. Did you work on the detail as you go along? Its probably best to work out the whole character and how he should stand before coming back to detail. Although You'll probably need a pretty good steader for that.
