Harvest moon series

I was thinking about trying the harvest moon series, can anyone tell me how the game is played and such stuff? Also which would be the best to start with? I was thinking maybe the one for gamecube its been out a few years figured i could get it cheap.

Free.User May 30, 2006 11:07 PM

Wheras I can't offer personal opinion, http://spacelist.org/images/wikipedia-logo.png is your best friend.

EDIT: Hold on a shit, yes I can. Harvest moon is a great game/series, and make sure you have lots of time to spare before you dive into it because it is very (read: extremely) addictive.

The Ghost May 30, 2006 11:09 PM

Yea i was just there before i posted that, but i wanted someone advice who had played it. :D Thanks though for trying to help me.

Free.User May 30, 2006 11:13 PM

In my honest and personal opinion, I like Harvest Moon 3 (GBC) the best.
Er, but that's probably becuase it's the only one I've played extensively...

VMDX May 31, 2006 12:08 AM

A Wonderful Life for Gamecube is extremely slow and very set in path and pattern, not recommended IMO.

I personally very much enjoyed Harvest Moon 64 and Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town for GBA. Those two offered great open-ended gameplay. Friends of Mineral Town nearly perfected the farming system, doing away with some annoying lag/nuisances the 64 version had.

AWL threw that all out. I hate it :(

I haven't tried the new GC one though (Magical Melody), but its gotten great reviews from the GameFAQs HM community, so I might try it out sometime :)

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 May 31, 2006 04:41 AM

Like he said, HM64 and FoMT. Personally I would recommend HM: Back to Nature over FoMT since this is the original for the PSX and is a bit more expanded. The GBA version gets rid of some things but it's only minor. Still to be missed though, but since your a new player it wouldn't really matter I guess. Plus the GBA rom is easier to get.

If you need a manual/guide, check out the faqs on GameFAQs.com

I don't really like the console versions of the games. I'd suggest you get MORE Friends From Mineral Town (GBA) over Friends From Mineral Town, as there's more events and stuff. The game took over my life once I started playing. I'm looking forward to the HM DS game.

ComCrimson May 31, 2006 07:35 AM

I love this series and would recomend that you buy the games for the portable consoles. The GC games really did suck. The whole 3-D thing doesn't lend itself well to Harvest Moon. You should also try picking up the PS1 version of the game. You can probably get it on Ebay cheap. It's not quite as good as the GB versions but it makes a nice change to play it on the TV.

As Free.User said though, make sure you really have nothing better to do before playing it 'cause it takes so much damn time. The most addictive game ever.

The Ghost May 31, 2006 09:20 AM

All the ones everyone seems to dis-like got great scores :(

Yeah, well, different strokes for different folks ;3

Personally, I think the HM is better suited to handheld systems. I prefer the nice 2D look with the cuter looking sprites and animals. The 3D-ness of the console games aren't as appealing.

Of course, that doesn't mean any 3D HM game is bad. I've only played A Wonderful Life (Girl's version) and I didn't really like it.

If you want to play some 3D games, I do have A Wonderful Life and one of the PS2 games here that I could sell to you. They're are brand new, never opened, and still wrapped up. Another Wonderful Life is opened, but I've only played it once. PM me if interested.

I'd like it if I was a girl. It just doesn't feel right playing it as a guy, but that's just me :p
Are the events the only thing that's added?

RABicle May 31, 2006 01:27 PM

Every Harvest Moon game is worse than the one before it. I'm dead serious when I say the SNES game is the best. Expect it to be a top selling game on Wii's virtual console while any Wii sequels flounder.

More Friends of Mineral Town is probably the most complete and thorough Harvest Moon game though if you want to have a thick slice of gaming. Just don't expect it to be as fun.

Wait a minute, I thought More Friends of Mineral Town was the one where you play as a girl. I remember buying it for my sister on her birthday, and it had a girl on the cover as the main character.

I don't know about the first part, as I haven't played that many of the other games, but I would definitely say the SNES version is the best version out there. You should definitely try out a rom or something of that game if you want a good starting point into the series (that's how I got my start).

I thought Havest Moon 64 was the best of the series. Even though there arent features from the later games, I thought it was the most fun to play. Less is more sometimes afterall. Certainly comparing the psx harverst moon and n64, you should get the psx for the features and extras but I personally would recommend the n64.

In addition, Havest Moon: Save the Homeland was also fun. It is different from the other Harvest Moons and is very quick, short and easy. Nice if you want to see what Harvest Moon is all about.

Well, being a girl, we've had to play male characters for eons, and it doesn't bother us any one bit ;)

Aside from events and the fact you can marry a guy instead, you can sell items to Won now at higher prices than normal shipping prices, although I'm too lazy to bring all my goods to him though. There's also more recipes, and there is a Farm Judgment feature, which gives you points for doing various stuff.

The game is also linkable with Another Wonderful life. There may be more stuff, but I can't remember them all.

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 Jun 1, 2006 05:17 AM

Ah, that's why ;)
I had no idea. The name "Freelance Wolf" doesn't really sound feminine you know :p but the girl versions are a good thing. My sister loves the way they are doing :)

So anyone seen Harvest Moon: Innocent Life? It's another spin-off and takes you to some volcanic island. You can drive vehicles so that's going to be pretty interesting. Somebody will need to buy me a PSP though cause I don't have one yet :/

Wonder if we'll ever see a Harvest Moon 2142 :p

When will people learn that usernames are never a good indication regarding the gender of the person using it? Wolves are my favourite wild animals, and Freelance is a tribute to Sam and Max: Freelance Police, the darn coolest duo there is in media land.

I've never heard of it. : /
Have you heard of HM: Rune Masters or whatever it's called? It's for the DS, and not only do you take care of your farm, you get to fight monsters and stuff. It's also online compatible.

Well I know I will never learn unless there's a gender indicator available near the avatar :p. Sam & Max are my favorites too. I just hope they change the voice for Sam, then all is ok.

The DS game is called Rune Factory: New Harvest Moon. It looks ok, I just hope they tune the action/rpg elements the right way not to forget online play and possibly co-op. This game is also being developed by another team other then Natsume which worries me slightly. Does anyone know the release date?

Freelance Jun 1, 2006 10:14 PM

XD Well, I like to pretend that everyone is a guy until they say otherwise, so no harm done. Besides, anyone who likes Sam and Max is cool in my book, and yes, I'd like to see Sam with a decent voice for once.

Oh dear...another company is doing Rune Factory. I hope it doesn't end up like another Star Fox: Assault. IGN says the release date for Japan is December 31, 2005

P.S. Does nobody wanna buy the HM games I have? I don't want them just lying around here unused :(

Yes, if they are at a decent price. What do you have to offer, and at what price?

B4-Hunter Jun 2, 2006 02:52 AM

Oh if we are talking about Harvest Moon anyone heard about: Harvest Moon Online for PC?

I love Harvest Moon from PSX and GBA. HM for N64 was tested only for a sec so can't say.

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 Jun 2, 2006 07:22 AM

Yeah, I've heard. Never expected this from Natsume though, they should stick to consoles where they have years of experience. Being a PC title makes it also more prone to cheats/hax, but if they develop a good anti-cheat system then it would be OK I guess. Popular MMOG's like World of Warcraft showed how well defended they are but ofcourse it's impossible to stop every kind of abuse.

I hope this game will be free to play, like Guild Wars :p

Another Wonderful Life, A Wonderful Life, and Save the Homeland. What sort of price do you have in mind? All but Another Wonderful Life were purchased at $18.99 Canadian if you want to know.

Harvest Moon Online! Sounds cool.

Ebay is offering those at about $18.99 (Buy It Now), so you'd have to offer a bit lower. I might be intested in one of the GC titles.

Rockgamer Jun 2, 2006 02:44 PM

Wow, that Harvest Moon online sounds pretty sweet. I'm not too thrilled about it being on the PC (I'm not a big PC game player), but if they manage to do it right I might actually get this.
