XP: you may be a victim of software counterfiting

So ya they are finally on to me, I think it was the windows automatic updates.
Im running winborg5.0 im pretty sure its xp professional.
Is there anyway to get rid of this, change my key, hack it anything its really annoying and has a timer when you want to log into windows which im sure will do nothing but get more annoying and bigger.
So ANY help is mucho appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hey, Rock. Are you getting a message when you first boot up your computer asking you to "Get genuine"? Because I've been getting a pop-up for about a week now saying that, along with a blue star icon in the lower right screen that you can't exit out of.

I think it's spyware, but I'm not sure.

YeOldeButchere May 28, 2006 09:12 AM

Nope, that's something from Microsoft. They think, and may or may not be justified in doing so, that you use a pirated version of Windows. They offer you the opportunity to buy the real thing if you want, but otherwise that stuff won't go away.

Frankly, if you do use an illegal version of Windows, it wasn't exactly the smartest move ever to enable auto-update and the like so that it could report back to Microsoft.

Well, it's on my work computer and we're on a server, so that shouldn't be a problem. I guess I'll call our computer guy next week and tell him to get his pasty ass over there fix it.

Thanks.

lol enjoy your Windows AIDS.

One way to stop it from bothering the shit out of you (but I don't know if Automatic Updates will work again,) is this.

That's pretty much the only way to disable it without doing any hacks and such.

It definitely stops the annoying messages.

I really don't know anything else that would happen, though. If it stops auto updates, well, you can just go to Windows Update and use the wga="disable" javascript trick, or use Windiz Update in Firefox.

To get the security tab, you need to turn off Simple File Sharing, which is under Tools -> Folder Options -> View, it's at the bottom of the list of checkboxes.

Popped up on my Mother's computer after an update (and pissed me off because her license is legit), and I just reformatted and disabled automatic updates. Problem gone.

Frankly, that doesn't surprise me. About the only way to be safe is to use an old version of Windows that they don't care about. ^^;;

Soluzar May 28, 2006 03:28 PM

Is there any possibility whatsoever that this incredibly annoying crap could manage to affect genuine, legitimate copies of Windows XP?

Signs point to yes.

This link should help you disable that POS Update.
Some preventitive medicine:
1. Manually update, do this by telling Windows to notify but don't install or download updates. Also hide any Windows Genuine Advantage related updates you find so you don't absentmindedly install them (though you might have to install some of these to update).
2. If your copy of XP is legit, then call Microsoft and have them sort out the problem. Remember, only do this if you get this shit pop-up with a legit copy of WinXP
3. Download this file and extract it to the [systemdrive]:\Windows\system32\ folder and overwrite the "LegitCheckControl.dll". Check 9down.com every once and a while to get a newer version of this file so it can disable WGA checks. If you have an illegal copy of WinXP, you'll be able to do manual updates now.

A hassle for sure, but if you have a pirated copy, it's what you have to do. In fact it's better than some of the other cracking programs out there since Microsoft isn't trying to disable your OS if it's pirated (we'll see how they do this with Vista).

They care a fucking shitload about Vista. There was a way for people to disable the trial runout in Build 5243 or something like that, but to do it, you basically got a dead computer in return. Windows Explorer wouldn't work after that, nor would Internet Explorer.

All signs point to pirates in trouble.

unknown_user May 30, 2006 03:26 AM

Whats the status on what could happend to your computer if you dont do anything about this?

Little Shithead May 30, 2006 11:21 AM

Uh, you don't get any updates for Windows, pretty much. That was divulged back when the update came out.

lazuli May 31, 2006 12:50 AM

I believe there is a Corporate Edition of XP that doesn't report back to MS...I have it on my desktop, but haven't used it in forever, so I wouldn't know if it's vulnerable to this.

It is.

What you're thinking of is activation.

Yup, looks like it's now one of the High Priority updates: http://i2.tinypic.com/11bhxt2.jpg. If you don't run automatic updates, you can simply go to the Windows Update site and select "don't show this update again" and you won't have to worry about it installing when you run updates. But if you did already install it, isn't it possible to uninstall the security update through the add/remove program tool and removing the KB905474 item? It looks like just a standard update as far as Windows is concerned. Alternatively, you could probably use System Restore to roll back a week and that should get rid of it as well.

Unforgiven Jun 1, 2006 10:34 AM

You can't uninstall it using the Add/Remove Program once you installed it.

But there is a method of removing it (See above).
