One Winged Angel (Game Boy Mix)

So I was browsing over Newgrounds yesterday and I found this mix from a search in the Audio Portal. It's the exact same OWA song, the only difference is that it sounds like Gameboy music and not PSX music.

It sounds pretty damn awesome as well, and the vocals are still included. To my knowledge this is a fan-made track and can't be found on any OSTs.

So what are your opinions on it? Good or bad, and why or why not?

I like how this is better than the original song.

PiccoloNamek May 19, 2006 08:49 PM

Haha! Awesome. It lacks the power of the original, though. ;)

Maybe because the sound bits is composed for gameboy.

orion_mk3 May 19, 2006 10:25 PM

Nice how the remixer was able to boil the song down to its essence. I would have liked for them to try and synthesize and/or replace the vocals, though, since they sort of break the mood.

Now I'd like to see the GB version of FFVII. It would have to be one of those crappy "borrow the title" games, and would most likely wind up being a subpar platformer :)

Basil May 19, 2006 10:56 PM

I can agree on the GB mix of the song not being as powerful as the original, due to the fact that most of the percussion is removed. The vocals sound a bit loud, so the mix in general would have been better if they were quieter or removed completely, IMO.

Awesome! I love it when people take modern vg songs and make chiptune versions. Speaking of which, does anyone know of a good site with this kind of stuff (not just chiptunes in general, but chiptune versions of modern songs)? I tried searching for one a little while ago but didn't have much success.

2A03.org has a very large number of covers of a wide variety of songs, all in NSF format.

Thanks! I'll have to check them out once I'm back on my regular computer.

I really like the rendition with Gameboy sounds. There's enough staccato tuning to remind me of Pokemon Battle-esqe GB themes. :)

Keeping the choir in the arrangement was I think the biggest mistake in this song. The choir is too powerful and completely overruns the synth background (from about 3:20-End).

That's my only gripe. Other than that. Cool song.

This is wicked, I once found a Gba version of owa somewhere - but this is way better.
But could the vocals really work on a gameboy??

Absolutely not. Which is why that is the major controversy of this rendition.

Ryunam May 20, 2006 04:09 PM

This is pure gold!

Didn't know a Gameboy-esque rendition could sound so fitting!
I wonder what kind of tools/soundfonts/synths they used to emulate these sounds. Anyway, it's definitely worth listening.

I suppose it depends upon which version of the Gameboy we're dealing with, honestly. If it were the DS, I'd say yes, the vocals could work, although they still wouldn't be quite as rich as the OWA chorals heard here.

But then again, if it were the DS, the rest of the chiptune quality would be higher.

My guess is that this is, by and large, something you'd hear on the GBA. (Minus the vocals)

SuperSonic May 20, 2006 05:59 PM

Actually, it could also work on the GBA...however, you would have to

downsize the vocals a bit. Look at the ending song to KH: CoM.

Yeah, basically I think what was done here is that he took the vocals from the PSone version and integrated them into the song. If you notice, the vocals are slightly off tempo as well.

One Winged Angel, just lol.

p.s. this is a good track. I love chiptune arrangements.

eriol33 May 28, 2006 12:35 AM

would someone upload the track again? the ysi link is dead already.:(

I actually like this version as much as I like the real version, from the FFVII OST. However, I've always been at a loss to understand why this track gets so much love. Very nice, but not his best work, in my opinion.

Grawl May 29, 2006 06:10 PM

Doesn't sound too bad, but probably not incredibly hard once you know the trick.

Dhsu May 29, 2006 07:51 PM

Yeah, I don't think this qualifies as a strict chiptune...you wouldn't be able to do this on a real GameBoy, even without the vocals. It sounds like he just replaced some instruments with saw/square/triangle waves and stuff.
