Awesome DVD Packaging

If you ask me, good packaging can oftentimes be what makes a DVD worth owning.

Good example:

http://www.geocities.com/vicecitysun...ics/versus.jpg

I literally bought Versus because it's packaging is so damned BADASS. It is a brilliant package that perfectly sums up the movie and makes you want to look at the back of the box.

Bad example:

http://www.genreonline.net/Genre_fil...illV2Large.jpg

Both Kill Bills are on the top of my list of all time faves, but had I not known anything about the movie, what the fuck would make me want to check it out? HOLY CRAP, LETS PUT TARANTINO'S NAME ON IT TWICE!! Miramax has a history of making DVD art truly suck.

Anyway, what are some of DVD packages that stick out for you?

VeryLaZ May 15, 2006 08:32 PM

Of the DVD's I own, the best by far would have to be the Evil Dead movies.

Very true about evil dead.

I'll add the two-disc Rocky Horror Picture Show layout. It has this great full-color fold out digipak going. No pics, sorry.

How can you consider a DVD cover featuring Uma Thurman bad?

HOW CAN YOU CONSIDER A DVD COVER FEATURING UMA THURMAN BAD?

This is bad:

I can't really think of any that are exceptionally good though. Oh well.

I actually had this tagged and ready to submit, but the difference is, Kill Bill is a good movie and Revolutions is not.

And Kill Bill's box is bad because it's so lackluster. It's just Uma with a sword againt some colors and Tarantino's name twice. I could have done a better job in my sleep.

Here's some kickass DVD packaging that no one can deny: (w/ free bonus CD woooot!)

Tomorrow baby, yeah!

I fail to see your point.

Oh shit more Home Movies. I totally didn't know that was coming.

I like the Amelie packaging.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It has a paper slip cover with a hole cut out in it that will display either Audrey Tautou's face, or the child version of the Amelie character, depending on which way you turn the case inside of the cover.

I think people here are confusing nice cover art with the actual packaging and presentation

Matt May 16, 2006 10:51 AM

The art is part of the packaging, you know.

Though now that you mention presentation, I have to highlight this stellar boxset:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Not only is the outer casing metallic, but it opens up like an ammunition magazine, with the discs coming out in a cascading sort of way.

This is a perpetual package of win.

Not only that, but it has some nice art on the DVD holding things itself. I don't know if you've ever seen the other side of the cardboard where the DVDs are held, but it's nice.

So I second the BoB box packaging being the best.

pyrus421 May 16, 2006 11:01 AM

The Band of Brother case I would buy..Ammunition magazing ftw. I can't really make of the Battle Royale case though. Need a little rotation..

See, I'm really underwhelmed by this box. I don't think it's special or appealing in any way, really. It's sort of bland and lackluster.

DarkLink2135 May 16, 2006 11:04 AM

The Mummy Collector's Set - Impossible to tell with this picture, but the packaging is VERY sturdy, there are 2 flaps on the front which open up to reveal the DVDs sitting inside. The entire left flap includes the seal that you see on the front, so its pretty sweet. The cardboardish stuff that the flaps are made out of are close to 1/4" thick. The packaging is built like a tank :p.

Jurassic Park Adventure Pack

This is also pretty sweet, the flaps on the right and left open up to reveal a scene from (i think) The Lost World. I'd get mine out but I'm hungry and I'm heading off to lunch right now :).

You gotta admit though, the Versus one is just a guy with a sword - pretty similar ...

Yeah but the packaging is not part of the art. Theres quite a few DVD cases with pretty boxes - that have awful packaging. Look at the Simpsons sets or The X-Files before they went slimlined.

Yea, but the Versus one makes great use of white space and is pleasing to the eye, the gaze just sort of slides over it, whereas the one for BR is stunted and poorly designed.

True, however, the Versus box looks like something that had atleast some effort put into it. It has some STYLE. It's not a stock photo against 2 colors. Kill Bill Volume 1 is a film that is OOZING with style, and the DVD should reflect that. All Miramax did for the KB boxes were take a picture of Uma and put her up against a bland background with 2 bold colors, and then slapped Tarantino's name on it TWICE. Kill Bill 1 and 2 are my favorite movies of all time, so, it's depressing to see how little effort was put into their packages.

My point is, it's not effective packaging for the movie.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2006 11:25 AM

Why does it not surprise me for a moment that Kill Bill would be Sprout's favourite movies?

Wall Feces May 16, 2006 11:51 AM

Anyway, before the thread gets fagged up any further...

http://www.ixbt.com/news/dvd/pics/al...rology-jap.jpg
I suppose it's not fair to not bring up this package in a DVD packaging thread... How do you feel about this? I'm not all that partial to it because it wouldn't fit anywhere. It's nice, yeah, but I think it's a bit overdone.

Eh, I dunno. It's the simplicity and cleanness that gets me.

Yeah, those damn Japs get the best box sets.

But you forgot the new Planet of the Apes set:

Quite awesome, I must admit.

Not bad, and its easy to remove/putback, unlike the above Xenomorph case.

Its simplistic but gets the job done very well.

I would worry about the disc scratching if its just being held there by the arm.

Haha, nice. They need to make a Ring 3 with a DVD instead of a VHS Tape,
just so that they can do this kind of thing again.

Looks completley average.

Misogynyst Gynecologist May 16, 2006 12:43 PM

I think that JP box is actually for a 2 VHS set, not DVD
