Requiem for a Development Arrested

Now that it's over (or practically over), what are your last(ing) thoughts on Arrested Development?

I thought it was nice to have a big bang, a four new episode block, end the series, especially since all of them were hilarious.

What did you think of the big twist?

Spoiler:
I can't watch the old episodes without remembering that Lindsay is adopted!

Eleo Mar 3, 2006 01:59 PM

I thought ABC was going to pick it up or something?

I think Arrested Development failed for a bit too much gotcha-wit and not enough hardcore laughs. Maybe my brain is too slow to keep up with the wit and irony. I frequently found myself going "ohhh, amusing," but 1-2 seconds after the "punchline".

Malcolm in the Middle, Simpsons, (to an extent, Family Guy) survived because they knew how to make you laugh inside and out. Arrested Development has all the wit and irony in the world, but rarely do I ever actually laugh at that shit. Ultimately I feel this is why Futurama failed; it being pseudo-Simpsons with a lot of "ohhh. Amsuing" and not enough laugh-out-loud humor.

Part of a joke is in the camera, too. I've seen shots where I said, "Damn, if they had only filmed it just like this I would have laughed."

I bought Season 1 because critics said it was good. They said the same thing about that new show Invasion, and that shit sucks. TV critics lie. Leave it to critics to take some obscure shit that's mildly amusing and say it's awesome just because it's unusual.

Good news! Showtime has picked up Arrested Development.

NYPOST: February 28, 2006 -- fans of "Arrested Development" can relax. Word is Showtime not only picked up the canceled Fox show but also ordered 26 more episodes
So that's good.

I think this show is absolutely brilliant. Superb writing, great cast, hilarious cameos. I am very happy it has been revived.

guyinrubbersuit Mar 3, 2006 06:59 PM

I thought that if they had another season, they could've done the jokes a lot better. It was quite chaotic with everything going on but I throughly enjoyed it. Contrary to Legato, I actually laughed so hard at many Arrested episodes that I was brought to tears and often missed the the other punchlines they had.

The show had a lot of stupid jokes in them. Most of the time, they just did jokes where it would guide in one direction to make you think something, only your original idea was correct, or somewhat correct. I can't wait for it to appear on Showtime.

"Word is" still isn't good enough. Need facts here.

Too many "will", "may", "could" and question marks out there to make it concrete.

khan0plinger Mar 3, 2006 08:01 PM

I tried to watch this show on many occasions since people always gave it rave reviews...and just couldnt get into it. A friend of mine said that theres a new show...Sons and Daughters...that is basically a copy of AD.

Stealth Mar 3, 2006 08:20 PM

The show was a little to subtle with the humor for most people. Can't expect most people to actually put a little thought into watching TV, now can we?

I thought the show was great and all, but one thing bugged me about the end:

Spoiler:

They never tied up the bit of the story where Maeby and George Michael get accidentally married.

I loved arrested development. And the season finale was so perfect! Hopefully the new season on showtime will be just as good.

By the way I'm new here so hi! :)

Eleo Mar 4, 2006 09:51 AM

I don't even have Showtime, so this shit is dumb. Way to get cancelled a tenth time, lol.

"Word is" sounded pretty certain in my mind somehow.

I tried finding some of those "facts" you needed... and you're right - there aren't any. Not really. Several different newspapers have reported the deal maybe took place, but yeah, nothing concrete. There's not even an announcement at Showtime's website. =/
I'm still optimistic, but I guess it's too early to celebrate.

evergreen Mar 5, 2006 03:56 AM

The "word is" that it can't be picked up yet since apparently it isn't cancelled yet. The technicality of "stopped ordering episodes" is still in place. However, in terms of Mitch, all creative signs point to "no" if only since even the whole preview bit of 313 was labeled "On the epilogue..."

Guess that's one last look at the Bluths.

Just because I think this might have gotten buried, what are some of your favorite quotes from AD?

"What for? So we can just make out all the time?"
"Why? Does that not work for your schedule?"

evergreen May 12, 2006 12:30 AM

I remember before there was a fledgling group of AD fans here; have they all died after the finale?

Cal May 12, 2006 12:39 AM

In hindsight I can spot technical flaws, but fuck, it did so many more things originally and brilliantly that it doesn't matter.

"Fried cheese... with club sauce. Popcorn shrimp... with club sauce. Chicken fingers... with spicy club sauce..."

Creepy, yet somehow awesome.

"You're a good guy, mon frere. That means brother in French. I don't know why I know that, I took four years of Spanish!"

Hmm. Maybe I just really like a lot of G.O.B.'s lines.

Well there's nothing new with AD, so we really can't say much about it now can we?

evergreen May 12, 2006 03:17 AM

Memories, comrade, memories. FOR THE REPUBLIC.

guyinrubbersuit May 12, 2006 03:23 AM

I have a friend who is named David Cross, no joke, and we sometimes call him Tobais, or accuse him of being a never nude.

evergreen May 12, 2006 03:24 AM

Just in case you're being vague (you never know), THE David Cross? Probably a David Cross, but whatever.

Admiral Amara May 12, 2006 03:29 AM

"There are dozens of us. DOZENS!!"

"I think the world is about to fall in love with Frightened Inmate #2"

I thought it was awesome how they had Carl Weathers on the show... I haven't seen all of it, but, on the show, did Carl Weathers ever eventually die? That's just what he does whenever he has a role in films. He got his arm blown off in "Predator", remember? Name me a signficant Carl Weathers role in which his character lived.

He's a David Cross, however I refer to him as THE David Cross.

Himself. So far.

"...or cocaine."

Admiral Amara May 12, 2006 03:41 AM

"You tricked me!"

"No, mother, I decieved you. 'Tricked' makes it sound like we have a playful relationship."

Ah, vaguely connected series' of quotes.

RacinReaver Sep 10, 2006 10:40 PM

For anyone that's still interested in the show and hasn't seen it yet, G4 picked the series up and is showing reruns. I think they had the first four episodes on tonight from something like 6-8 PM Eastern.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 10, 2006 10:43 PM

That's great. Even though I own all of the seasons on DVD, I'd still love to see an occasional episode while flipping through the TV.
