Music to sleep by...

I recently found myself in more somber moods, lulling myself to sleep by the Peach Healing music Nintendo Sound CD. Its just so docile and the selections soothing. The Luigi CD is a close follow up but not quite as nice as the Peach one.

A second favorite of mine would probably be the Animal Crossing gamerip as its tunes are pretty simplistic and quiet.

What tunes/soundtracks do you think are good ones to just lull back and recline to that either put you to sleep (in a good way) or possibly just play in the background while you're falling asleep?

The albums you mentioned are both really good for relaxation. I'm making a VGM compilation at the moment and the first disc has a theme of 'Relaxation'. Of course I'm not gonna mention all the tunes on there, but I'd recommend several tracks from these games:

Super Monkey Ball 2
Kingdom Hearts
Kirby Air Ride
Sonic Adventure

Also, check out 'Fear Factory' from Donkey Kong Country, really nice indeed. There's also an unused track from Super Monkey Ball 2 that sounds spectacular, I couldn't possibly find a better song. I'll upload it for those that would like to hear it:

I listen to Chrono Cross' OST most of the time. Sometimes, I feel like listening to something more rock like Chaos Legion or the Black Mages though.

The Peach Healing music is great but I just can't sleep listening to it. I just keep listening to it again and again... :(

The music to Age of Empires 2 is definitely one I would say fits in this category. Although, usually I go to sleep by listening to the hum of my computer fans, as it downloads another 4 GB of music overnight. :p

orion_mk3 May 15, 2006 11:56 AM

The key is compilation; I know of few albums that don't break their moods (someone suggested "Kingdom Hearts" above, for example, but the percussion and organs in "Forze del Male" wouldn't help *me* sleep!)

I'd suggest, in addition, some tracks from "Dew Prism" and the "Secret of Mana" series. Jeremy Soule has some good atmosphereic music too; some critics *claim* it puts them to sleep.

I have often fallen asleep during the Ending Theme of Terranigma (it's a good track). If I INTEND to let myself lullaby to sleep, I put on the FFX-2 Piano Collection. Oftentimes however, fast, beat-driven albums like Internal Section or Drag-On-Dragoon have calmed my soul for easy eyeshutting. As strange as it sounds, for sleep I only need music of CONTINUATION.

So it doesn't surprise when I actually fell asleep in the discotheque. UNZ UNZ UNZ, but me still ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.

Kinggi May 15, 2006 01:25 PM

Mood music from Ecco Songs of Time and Defender of the Future does it for me.

squaretex May 15, 2006 04:59 PM

Good call on DewPrism...there's actually quite a few Junya Nakano tracks that fit the bill. I remember once creating a playlist from DP, Another Mind, and FFX.

PiccoloNamek May 15, 2006 05:01 PM

Drag-On Dragoon. Yes, I mean Drag-On Dragoon. The music is extremely repetitive, and will quickly lull you into a deep slumber.

I fell asleep to it once, and I woke up feeling strangely uneasy. (Damn babies!)

elwe May 15, 2006 05:06 PM

"Speaking with the Stars" from Baten Kaitos has always been one of my favorite "sleeping songs," although I'm not saying that it's boring. In fact, it's one of the most moving pieces I've had the privilege of hearing.

CelticWhisper May 16, 2006 10:58 AM

Try some of the ambient tracks from Silent Hill. Not the SH1 noise-horror numbers, but some of the stuff from parts 2 or 4. Very relaxing.

Argentis May 16, 2006 11:02 AM

FF Piano Collections always work...

PiccoloNamek - Drag-on-Dragoon wouldn't lull me to sleep, more like give me a headache! lol

K3nn3dy - Where's that library track from?

Rydia May 16, 2006 11:28 AM

Romancing SaGa 2 Eternal Romance and Romancing SaGa 3 Windy Tale are two soundtracks that come to mind. I first discovered them through a friend after I asked if there were any good serene soundtracks I might have liked.

Krelian May 16, 2006 11:42 AM

Roger Matthews - "Older Promises". Short piano interlude, but it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. It's a remix of "A Distant Promise" from Radical Dreamers. Here get.

Mitsuda is a genius.

Josh_1 May 16, 2006 03:00 PM

The most relaxing VG album that I can think of is Sailing to the World Piano Collection. Masashi Hamauzu brilliantly arranges Mitsuda's originals and turns them into something truly relaxing and remarkable. Melody of Aqua, in particular, will relax you almost immediately. I listen to the album quite often if I have trouble sleeping, because each piece is just gorgeous. It works every time :D!

DarkLink2135 May 16, 2006 03:34 PM

I spliced together the last 2 tracks on the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack, and cut off the ending of "may it be" where it gets very loud. It's pretty much the perfect anti-climatic song I can think of, it just keeps getting gentler and gentler.

Fire On Ice May 16, 2006 03:55 PM

I find a lot of talking puts me to sleep. My praents bought a bunch of tapes with a radio show recorded on them ages ago and I usually just put them on at a very low volume and either the white noise from the tape playing in my boom box or the really low speaking tones lull me into a deep sleep.

Rimo May 16, 2006 04:41 PM

All those suggestions are very interesting! I'd like to add one more that works for me: the music from the Myst series. It's usually very calm and ambient, sometimes even hypnotizing.

maxmontezuma May 16, 2006 05:17 PM

I had an awesome Ambient CD, i can't remember the name.. but when you listen to this and you lay down on your bed.. you feel pretty good and you are asleep faster than you can say hello ^^

I remember I awhile back Kureisama made a vgm compilation of for studying. It also works surprisingly well when I want to lull myself to sleep. Despite some of its upbeat tracks. I've attached the album info to my post but if anyone is interested in hearing it just PM me!

As for other OSTs, I have a long list. Some of my favorites for sleeping are:
Dew Prism OST
Music from the Other Side of Vana'diel THE STAR ONIONS
Gradius Suite Fantasia
ICO ~Melody in the Mist~ OST (a little short but some of the old OCremix tunes of ICO made great sleep music.)
Orchestral Game Concert 2
And of course Peach Healing music

Goubot May 18, 2006 04:26 PM

I can't imagine falling asleep to Drakengard's music. Sure, it's repetitive, but it's so damn frenetic sometimes. Dunno.

Romancing SaGa 3 Windy Tale does the trick for me, most of the time. I've also fallen asleep while playing Dragon Quest 8 a lot, which is weird since I like the game and I like the music.

Snowdjinn May 18, 2006 06:52 PM

I accully have a smooth song file where i coppy all the smooth songs i find into it so i can play it for sleeping. Some of the songs i have in there are..

Chrono Cross - [1-13] Leaving the Body
Deus Ex - Lebedev Airfield - Quiet Conversations

Torque May 22, 2006 08:19 PM

Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus - Calm Before The Storm
Final Fantasy X: Piano Collections - Via Purifico

Both of the above tracks are very ocean-esque and guaranteed to lull you into 'la-la land'.

Synthesis May 22, 2006 08:35 PM

I usually put in my Star Ocean: The Second Story OST is I want to fall asleep. I have it preset to play songs in a certain order so just in case there is a loud, fast song.

Some of the standout sleep inducers:

The Venerable Forest
Pure A Stream
Weathercock
The Dim Light of Dusk
Teary
White the heart
Resolution
We form in crystals

Tappy May 22, 2006 08:51 PM

I'd have to say the music from Secret Of Evermore.

Songs from this game like: Horace, Pyramid, Collosia Chamber 2, Ivor Tower (The Town & Castle), Puppet Show, Flying, Ebon Keep Castle, Introduction/Credits ...really take you to a dreamy & mellow place.
I really consider this score to be a true masterpiece!

The Donkey Kong Country soundtracks likewise.
And I recently discovered the new score for the remake of DKC3 on the GBA, which is definitely another Dave Wise soundtrack which everybody should give a try.
(IMO it's even better then the original score for the SNES version of DKC3)
