You DO NOT laugh at this Japanese man trying to speak English!

Here's a little test. It's 1AM here and I just watched this video and tried not to laugh but I just started bursting into laughter once in a while.

Try it!

It's pretty amusing to watch the guy try to pronounce Venice. I enjoyed that part quite a bit. Also, what exactly were the ones being disqualified hit with?

evergreen May 11, 2006 11:59 PM

FLOGGING STICK.

EDIT: One, two, three, ho!

josho May 12, 2006 12:02 AM

Never heard of it. Is it made of bamboo? Whatever it is it looks mighty painful.

Dullenplain May 12, 2006 12:07 AM

"ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten" indeed . . .

Synthesis May 12, 2006 12:11 AM

10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10...I couldn't help bursting out laughing at his inability to speak English. Plus, that one guy who continually lost and got hit with the stick. Ka-youbi = Tuesday. :judge:

SketchTheArtist May 12, 2006 12:17 AM

Yeah, that stick hurts like shit.

And oh yeah, that '10 10 10 10...' part was so fuckin' funny!

Synthesis May 12, 2006 12:19 AM

They guy trying to speak English looked like he was about to cry a few times during that video. I almost felt bad for him.

evergreen May 12, 2006 12:29 AM

What the hell kinda game show is this anyway? It's so funny: every so often some snippet of an Asian show shows up online, everyones LOL's, but does anyone have any idea what the whole thing is like, if there even is one? We only see bits and pieces, but does this stuff go on for thirty minutes at a time or something?

Rockgamer May 12, 2006 12:30 AM

I watched the whole thing without laughing, so do I get a prize or something?

But seriously, wow...I can't believe the Japanese failed at funny.

Synthesis May 12, 2006 12:30 AM

They should show a video like that in front of an American classroom and see how many laugh and face the same consequences. That would be hilarious.

Rydia May 12, 2006 12:40 AM

I thought the parts that showed the audience trying not to laugh was amusing. One of the students was holding his face steady with both hands.

You're too cool for us man.

@Evergreen: Don't know, they have so much fucked-up TV shows there, it all seems to come from ONE show.

Trench May 12, 2006 12:52 AM

It didn't work. Did I do something wrong?

Yay! I'm cool!

But to be honest though, there were a couple of times where I almost laughed, though I did nothing more than smile for a little bit.

It's a shinai used in kendo.

josho May 12, 2006 01:04 AM

Okay, I figured it was some sort of practice sword.
I looked it up and found out that it's made up of 4 bamboo slats. Definitely on the painful list.

SketchTheArtist May 12, 2006 01:11 AM

Isn't it some type of discipline weapon? I saw that in some documentary. Is there more than one usage or type?

josho May 12, 2006 01:17 AM

From what wikipedia says here I guess it can be used as a disciplinary tool as well.

Cool. Thanks!

evergreen May 12, 2006 01:20 AM

Undertones of S&M going on here. We all want to 'learn.'

JazzFlight May 12, 2006 01:28 AM

It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be. It was more humorous watching the contestants flunk out. However, the "ten ten" for 20 got me pretty good.

What's funnier is anime shows when the characters are in English class reading a passage and they mangle the language horribly, or in Beck where they're supposed to be a native speaker and so they insert English slang and curse words.

Koneko May 12, 2006 01:53 AM

I managed not to laugh. He did pretty well and I'm sure I'd sound pretty funny trying to read German or something (or romanji Japanese)

I didn't laugh, but I smiled--especially at the one trying to eat his magazine....

But the student that amazed me was the one who giggled, and just got up--knowing he was going to get hit.

But, yeah, the guy in the video looked like he was ready to cry, and I liked his style: can't say it English--say it in your native language.

Mojougwe May 12, 2006 06:15 AM

You crazy people, it's not one continuous chain of 10s! It's 10-10, 10-10, 10-10! PAIRS TO SAY 20! (Funny! :D).

And I really like the parts when he gets stuck on a particular word and the red highlight goes forward then back in repitition.
