Dark Messiah of Might & Magic

Being developed by Ubisoft: http://www.gamespot.com/e3/e3story.h...507&pid=929360

Looks great - it will be out this fall. At this point I'm much more interested in this than Oblivion; although it isn't fair to compare them because this is an action game and Oblivion is an rpg.) Based on the Source engine, it should run better than Oblivion yet have a similar graphical quality. I wonder if they will be able to incorporate some of the M&M humor that has been sprinkled throughout the role-player series?

It certainly seems like a very interesting action game with some realistic in-game dynamics. The thought of interacting with in-game environments like sending chairs flying at enemies or ducking under a table for temporary cover is very exciting and innovative. As with point specific damage effects like blinding a cyclops by stabbing it in the eye.

But as an MM game, I think Dark Messiah might irk a lot of long-time fans. It certainly doesn't look like it will have the trademark MM humour considering all the blood, gore and violence. The monsters also look more menacing than goofball. After the traversity that was MM9 and the numerous MM action spin-offs, I'm not quite sure what to think about MM anymore. I would think serious fans are more interested in a solid traditional MM RPG and not another MM action game.

A new article about the multi-player portion of the game is up on Gamespot:

Now I'm really interested in this!

God this game is so fucking gorgeous. Its currently must buy on my list.

EDIT: some more stuff here: http://www.jeux-france.com/news16120...te-obscur.html

This game looks promising. I just hope the fun lasts longer than 5 days. After Oblivion's wow-factor from the graphics wore off, it was just "oh, i'm doing this again..." Well, at least it was like that for me.

Goubot Jun 1, 2006 01:12 PM

I'm all for a decent MM action game if they can actually pull it off, but most of the ones I've played have been pretty bad. The screenshots for this game look insane, and my current box probably wouldn't be able to handle it. Augh.

I'd also be all over a return to a traditional style. I'm fine with the company as long as they release quality products, but that... hasn't been the case, at least for the MM series (MM9, what the hell).

grendelrt Jun 1, 2006 04:51 PM

If your current box can play HL2 good, it should be able to handle MM:DM. It runs off a modified source engine (the HL2 engine). Dont know how heavily modified, but I think that HL2 would be a good indication.

The singleplayer demo was released today and I must say i'm quite impressed. It's actually quite a fun game. It definately does feel like an action RPG, similar to Deus Ex, but in a fantasy setting. It has good combat, the weapons are cool, especially with dual wielding, and it makes good use of the source engine. I suggest you give it a try.

I just remembered this awesome game was released today when I found this thread.

I'm DLing it right now! :D

Gechmir Aug 8, 2006 03:35 PM

Whoa. It's already almost out? I remember reading about it when HoMM5 was still in the works. Fantastic ;D Must try it out.

Thalin Aug 8, 2006 03:45 PM

I just completed the demo, was fun, but it says it's not coming out until fall of this year :(

Gechmir Aug 8, 2006 04:34 PM

Waited 50 damn minutes on Fileplanet to start the DL. Then it relogged it to 46 minutes and hasn't budged. Went to Fileshack which has a DL cap at 100k. ANOTHER LINE. JOY :( I'm pissed. The DL should be going by now. I got stuff to do. Lemme at least get it running ;_;

i've probably played through the demo 4 or 5 times since last night and now i've just been seeing just how much i can mess up. everything about this game feels right to me. the headbob, player animations, full body model (yay!). all the combat types are cool to mix up, although you only get so many points for a basic level in each; and it feels much better to max out one kind of class and tear shit up. i can't imagine the end of the full game when you can have almost everything available.

it's a shame that the level can be completed in say... 5 minutes if you want. definitely do as they suggest and play it a few times and experiment with everything you possibly can. i've had some really cool moments given the small toolset you can play with. this game will be quite a treat it looks like.

unrelated, source engine sure is shaping up. with this and portal and the art style of team fortress 2. i'd love to see what directx10 will mean for valve and co.

*edit* i completely forgot. this demo is posted on newsgroups if you have the know how. it's quite simple. get grabit and look up your isp's news server. here's the nzb file to make it easier. enjoy :)

I like the game but geez. My computer gets real lag spurts. I dumbed a lot of the graphics down to the lowest levels. My poor GeForce 6800 OC I got last Christmas is starting to look like real shit. Can't run newer games well AT ALL. But then again, games are getting brutal in graphics.

I just loooove how the character moves in this. The camera tilting as you hit turns, blood accumulation on weapon, etc. Plus, on higher resolutions, the things far in the distance look absolutely *gorgeous*.

I was kinda having that problem with HL2, so I'm still not sure if it's worth it to dl this demo. I had all the effects tuned to the bare minimum, only then it was playable, but the load times were still horrendously long.

Darkelf Aug 25, 2006 03:41 AM

Actually I'm gonna rely on good faith, and buy the game without playing the demo. The gameplay looks solid and varied and the graphics are brilliant. I like the ways you can get rid of an enemy. Enough reason for me to invest in it. And besides I wanted a game in this genre for so long now...

I was able to play HL2:EP1 on max detail at 1024x768 so I'm hoping for the best with Dark Messiah.

Gechmir Aug 25, 2006 01:09 PM

HL2:EP1 was murder on my rig due to the new lighting tricks. If you can play that on Max, then this'll be about the same. It's REALLY good though. FPS RPGs are rare birds and most of them to see daylight have been smash hits (Deus Ex, System Shock, etc). I don't think this'll be any different. Unless it's rittled with bugs upon going Gold, then it should be worth the price. Dunno how long it'll be but it has ample replayability just for brutality.

I love how you can take out enemies in sword combat type stuff or try to one-shot them somehow. Or kick them on to the ample spikey objects ;D I'm going to buff my rig up once I have cash. Get a new MoBo with PCI Express and a higher end graphics card, maybe a 7800. Then we'll see what's what... >_O

Darkelf, what sort of rig are you running on?

Darkelf Aug 26, 2006 09:05 AM

P4 2.4 Ghz, 1 gig RAM and 6600 GT AGP over here. About 3.5 years old but it's my longest running system so far... Still good for some of the newer games but I may have to upgrade in time for Crysis to get released but that's another story.

Anyway I love Deus Ex and System Shock 2, so hopefully the gameplay has enough depth in store for us as well.

Gechmir Aug 26, 2006 10:58 AM

What the crap ;__; My rig is better than yours but I can't run HL2 on max specs. I hafta run textures on medium to low to avoid massive lag. *cries*

WolfDemon Aug 30, 2006 02:47 PM

I watched my friend play the demo and I actually found myself laughing and clapping like a retarded kid when he did something cool. I'm definitely looking forward to this game. The multiplayer mode is gonna be sex.

Inhert Sep 12, 2006 06:47 AM

wow I played the demo and god this game is fun!! really I think it's even better than oblivion! well at least in term of gameplay! realloy in Oblovion I didn't really like to fight melee I find the battle boring, but in this with the different attack and finishing strike, it's so fun! I think they made the mage really more enjoyable too, I so love to freeze ennemy XD and finaly I think it's the first game that made a thief job (or assassin) as fun and good than this one, the double dagger is very fun and the bow too ^^

I doN,t think that they will let you as much as free will like in oblivion but where Oblivion was less interesting (at least for me) this game really make it really fun! (talking about gameplay XD)

and the graphic ar so nice too and in run so well! I think they use the source engin no?

Some new screens here: http://www.worthplaying.com/article....thread&order=0 that show off some very cool effects. I finally downloaded this demo (just got higher-speed Internet) and am going to give it a try this weekend.

Rosencrantz Oct 15, 2006 11:13 PM

If the whole game sounds like the demo, I simply think that Dark Messiah will be one of the 3 greatiest game of the year.
