Internet Jargon: You Know You're in the Know When...
O RLY. YTMND. All your base are belong to us.
These are a few of the many terms and phrases that get used as part of some exclusive part of the internet, those in the know, to separate the vets from the, the n00bs, is it? That's it, right? Yeah. Or newbs. Root: newbie as in new person right? Yeah, okay. Anyway, this stuff gets tossed around annd they get really popular, some across the entire web and some in little communities like GFF. What would you classify as your "need to know" list, the stuff you've gotta have in your head to be best equipped in traversing this internet? |
:bigmiu:
You can close the thread now. TEAM AWESOME has won this round. :p |
You pretty much need to be able to survive a day or up to a week browsing /b/
After that, you should be instilled with proper mental strength to face anything on the net. |
Around here, you can't get by without Megaspeak. Why lie.
|
wtf, stfu, lol, rofl, brb, and at least some concept of what the heck "1337" is are rather required in my opinion. If you have those you can usually figure out the rest.
PEBKAC is a great way to find someone who really knows their stuff, however. Anyone who spends enough time around computers (and gets asked to fix them) just about has to know that one. Heck, I use it in real life. |

As for more acronyms, GTFO and AFK are other common phrases that pop up all over IM conversations. |

EDIT: Well one time, I had a watermelon on my lap, so it was either my fault or the fruit's. |
PEBKAC = Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair. I love firefox with its handy dandy search extensions.

it's all about the acronyms... but one thing I've seen people is, OMGWTFBBQ I think... I get the OMGWTF bit, but what's the BBQ stand for??? let's see... I've used tyt... some above mentioned... I'm sure there's more, but can't dig them out =/
|
BBQ would be barbecue. Even though you can't really call that an acronym, because there's no Q in the word, and it's only one word, anyway.

One should realize that "fake" tags are not mistakes but usually humorous attempts:
eg. </sarcasm> = "end sarcasm" You have to know your smilies too, or else you'll think people are making punctuation errors :o "*" seems to indicate corrections or actions eg. hueg -> *huge eg. *drools* Some silly phrases are derivations: eg. rofl -> roflcopter, roflmao eg. lol -> lollin' |
I see intentionally mispelling words everywhere nowadays: liek, caek, wut, just to name a few.
|
I think any of the gb2/b (or y, or anything) is one of the things I've gotten from web lingo. Or maybe it's just too much 4chan?
Also, FAIL, Sage, Party Hard! and Why you throw chip? It amuses me greatly when I see these things outside of the internet. |

You know, there's always the flipside to this little situation. What if people think you're a total geek for saying shit you only know from years upon years of web browsing?
Example: One day I was at work moving the color printer to the opposite side of the work area so that it would clear up some room for some filing cabinets. Xerox printers are fucking huge. So huge in fact that I said, "Fuck man. This thing is HUEG LIKE SASSBOX." Nobody laughed. :( |
OMGWTFBBQ was originally OMG WTF be back quick. as in OMGWTFBBQ TORNADO.
http://www.catb.org/jargon/ - good resource for some of the :nerd: things. http://www.wikiworld.com/wiki/index.php/4chan - IS DAT SUM 4CHAN THING? |
The Urdan Dictionary :dotdotdot: Forgot that even existed.

I'm personally a fan of the phrase "OH NOES." It always makes me laugh, and it's even crept into everyday conversation among my friends.
. . . Yeah. Plus there's always: http://bart.trendmill.nl/forum/rolleyes.jpg |
One thing that I wondered about was "zomg" I mean come on, WTF, why the hell do you want a "z" there. Beyonds the bounds of stupid ;\

I've always been a fan of 'rofl'. It is good funny time to pronounce. I pronounce 'lmao' lammo. |

"DID YOU GET MY POST IT WAS SARCASTIC LOL I'LL MAKE SURE YOU GET IT" "I HAD NO IDEA" "WAIT WERE YOU BEING SARCASTIC JUST THEN?" "IMAGE OF AN OWL GOES HERE" |
Surely that isn't as bad as adding stupid letters infront of well known acronyms ¬_¬? Why do people do it :(?
