Big or small laptop
 

My boss is going to buy me a laptop.
Should I get a big one or a small one? I really don't know since I've never had one before. It will be used for work during travels (mostly writing documents).

Small. Dell Latitude D620 my currently preferred smallish laptop that has good power. The Dell Latitude X1 is the TINY model that is pretty good too, but it lacks an internal optical drive, so you may want to avoid that one. I think that Sony's equivalent TINY model does have an internal optical drive though, so you may go for that.

Is it hard to write on small laptops...?

My friend has this uber nice ultra small Sony (built in camera too), I'd recommend that if your looking for ultra mobile laptops.

Not at all, unless you have tumors for fingers, but anyhows you will get used to it.

Ok, it seems like everybody is suggesting small laptops. So I'm going for a small one. Can you guys post links to the laptops? Maybe he wants me to give him a link later so that he can buy it (don't worry about the price, I belive the goverment has a lot of money...)

Except its white and orange and comes with a few extra things like a camera on the top of the screen, its highly portable and gives him decent enough performance. I think it had Pentium M 1.2ghz, 1 GB of Ram, 60GB HD, 128mb shared graphics, wi-fi etc..

I'm not sure about the realibility of Sony laptops but his has been rock solid this past year. He doesn't even have a laptop bag or anything for it, he just grabs it along with his text book when he goes out the door, and just walks to uni with it in his hand covered by his textbook. [/steal]

Here is a list of ultra-portable laptops at What Laptop; take a look and see if one catches your eye. I really like the IBM Thinkpad laptops, but after looking at the Dell Inspiron X1 I must say I'm tempted to opt for that instead. However, for optical media you must use an external drive, which could be troublesome but with flash media so widespread it shouldn't prove to be that much of a problem for office work. It also supports widescreen resolutions which IBM Thinkpads lack; but that's more of personal preference.

I recommend the ThinkPad ones - I've had nothing but trouble with Dells.

I have the exact opposite experience.

I have a friend with a ThinkPad, and the thing is a pain in the ass. He's lucky if the thing will ever do what he wants, and even luckier if it will connect to my wireless.

I have another friend with a Dell, and he's had no problems with the thing.
