How much should I charge for a simple html/php website?

I'm not sure where to post this, so I just post it in here.
A professor just discovered my graphical talent and has offered me a small design job for a firm that he's working with.

I'm just curious how much I should charge them. What is the normal prize for a website?

Grawl May 3, 2006 01:12 PM

Depends on how much work you need for it. I'd go for $50 to $100.

gaming May 3, 2006 01:41 PM

Isn't $100 way too little?

Grawl May 3, 2006 01:48 PM

As I said, it depends on how much work you need. A random site asks $250,- ~ http://design.aplus.net/

Yeah I'd go for $200+ or so.

But what you really need to consider is how much he can give you. Is he rich or po'. How tight is he with his money. If you charge him too much he might find someone else to do it, if you charge him too little you might be selling yourself short.

It depends. I've known several people that do/did web design for money.

Here's the problem, someone who likes all the fancy shit like flash etc. and draws everything all fancy like and is new and therefore slow, tends to think that a web site design is worth TONS, because it takes so much time/effort etc.

Someone who has done this for a while, and throws together a decent site in no time at all might charge quite little for a simple job.

You should charge them based on what they want, and how much effort and time you *should* have to put into the project.

I've got one friend who claims it takes a month to put together a site. And another that can make one just as good in a day

I've put together a 7-page static site (no php, no fancy flash or javascript, just CSS magicks) with graphics for $200, within a week of on-off effort.

Then again, since it's a recommendation by someone you know, charge less =p

They gave me $571.
Should I be happy or cry?

Grawl May 4, 2006 09:29 AM

You can't do the job, you suck at it.

Let me do it.

gaming May 4, 2006 09:54 AM

I can do it if I believe!

Grawl May 4, 2006 10:25 AM

That's what the goverment wants you to believe - don't be fooled.

gaming May 4, 2006 10:55 AM

I work for the goverment! (from August 1st)! :D

Zergrinch May 4, 2006 12:01 PM

The obvious Singaporean response is that you are a price taker, thus you take whatever is offered you.

$571 ain't too shabby for a day's work, seeing as the time differential of your posts indicating the offer and payment are that close :p

You better make a fucking good site for $571.

Why such an odd number?

Eleo May 5, 2006 02:29 PM

I wish I could make a site for that much :( I made three websites for a local filmmaker and got $200 out of it, total.

During the time gaming decided on the price, the guy bought himself lunch a few times from the original $600.
