United 93

So, the movie is getting great reviews, despite all my predictions of it being crap. (Although, these predictions were based on the trailer, and people are saying that the trailer grossly misrepresents the movie)

Anybody here see it and have any thoughts? I'd like to know if it's worth it or not.

Saying otherwise brands you a traitor of Freedom.

Anyway, i don't know. Does a movie really need to be made on something that happened 5 years ago? $$$~

Stealth Apr 29, 2006 11:07 AM

Isn't it United 93 anyway? Flight 93 was the A&E movie.

{changed the thread title}

Sounds like a good movie. It's supposed to be an uplifting view of how, under pressure, people can band together to fight a common enemy. I don't see how this is exploitation in the least, especially when many actual family members of the victims supported the movie (and some are even in the movie).

What are you talking about, movies are made about topical issues all the time.

American Dreamz, Primary Colors, Farenheit 9/11, etc...

I think if the film was actually bad, people would have railed on it even more than usual since it'd be perceived as a 9/11 cash-in.

Even though it's being considered such a great film, I honestly don't think I'll be able to see it at least until it's on DVD. I just don't think I'd be able to sit through the whole thing.

avanent Apr 29, 2006 11:31 AM

Even a year later when they start showing it on cable... I still probably wont bother watching it.

While we were waiting for Silent Hill to start, they were showing a special on United 93. I grew bored before the special was even 5 minutes in, it was very unintresting. I'm not really intrested in supporting hollywood's capital recreation of an event that happened not even a full 5 years ago.

SemperFidelis Apr 29, 2006 11:46 AM

Make no mistake. The people that were on that plane are heros. I just pray that the movie doesn't dishonor their memory. And I saw that special on the Discovery Channel a few months back. Couldn't help sweating tears.

Cirno Apr 29, 2006 11:48 AM

I'm not seeing this.

Even if the film turns out to be some great work, I still think it's way too early to make a film based on or around the events of 9/11. Sure it may be more about, as Jazz said, people banding together to fight a common foe while under an insurmountable pressure, but it still feels cheap to me. Especially when the media's been saturated with 9/11 material anyway.

Agent Marty Apr 29, 2006 01:42 PM

I may check this movie out. If it's getting a decent amount of positive reviews (as people have stated), then it might be something I'd like to see.

I am curious about your statement here. What do you mean when you say, "Especially when the media's been saturated with 9/11 material anyway"?

LizardSC Apr 29, 2006 08:52 PM

I'd like to see this. I don't think it was too early to make a movie based on 9/11, supposing it gives it the delicate treatment it requires. Mainly because it stars alot of unknowns without the exaggerated patriotic bullshit. Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" this summer, however, I think is too early. I really like Nicholas Cage, but his placement in that movie absolutely screams Hollywood mega-budget movie.

Grundlefield Earth Apr 29, 2006 10:15 PM

I just watched Flight 93, not United and it was decent. It definitley brings you back and fucks with your mind on where the hell the plane went. And how it evaporated and whether or not it was actually shot down or not.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Apr 29, 2006 10:49 PM

I would see this if it didn't involve a bunch of gushy crap from the families who lost their loved ones.

Can anyone tell me if it IS in fact a bunch of interviews sparsed with some recreations of the plane crash and bonding people? I am all for people bonding in unity to come against a united cause, but unless its actually going to be about THAT, I don't really feel like paying $10 to go see a bunch of interviews with the families of the people on the plane.

May as well make a movie about every person who lost a soldier, someone in the towers, someone in the Pentagon, someone who died in the Vietnam War, et cetera.

As in, I'm tired of 9/11 stuff?

It's kind of died down a bit since the attack, but it's still there. I take it they don't have televisions where you live.

I think you are thinking about The Flight That Fought Back, which was a "docudrama" that aired on the Discovery Channel last year. Like you said, it featured interviews with the families of the people who died on the flight, along with re-enactments of events that happened on the flight. I haven't seen United 93, but from what I can tell it is all drama, with no interviews or stuff like that in the film.

What?

It's not that at all, it's essentially a real-time recreation of the events.

I'd imagine that "Flight" 93, the TV documentary was more along those lines. No, "United 93" is a straight forward actual movie. What I meant about "some of the victims' families being in the movie" is that they put them in the movie somehow (I'm assuming either extras or playing the people who answered the calls from their loved ones).

I certainly do have a television, which means I'm aware of the fact that there's a war going on. A war that, I'm sure, can be attributed to the events of 9/11, in some way, shape or form.

Not to mention United 93, which is, for all I know, the first movie of its kind to hit the silver screen since 9/11 itself. So while yes, the war has been going on for a decent amount of time, the movie is a pretty big deal. Especially since some theaters are banning it, if I remember correctly.

With both the war and this movie being released, I would be hard-pressed not to find the media covering some kind of aspect of 9/11 still.

So, what I was curious about was, what did you expect?

LizardSC Apr 30, 2006 12:03 PM

Yes, the entire movie is supposedly in real time... minute by minute. Apparantely only 1/3 of the movie actually depicts the hijacking, the rest depicts the events through air traffic controllers, military commanders, etc. If you like suspense thrillers, this is supposed to be right up your alley (although calling this a thriller seems kinda wrong somehow).

I'm not saying the movie isn't a big deal. The simple, itty bitty point I was trying to make is that I'm tired of seeing non-stop coverage or references to an event that, despite how tragic it was, happened a few years ago. I don't need a movie to try and "lift my spirits." If I needed that, I'd go watch Pay it Forward.

The war might have something to do with this. Hell, the movie might too, I don't know. I guess the most I can do is turn off my TV or get my daily dose of news from soundbytes on the radio. It's not that I'm overly sensitive about 9/11 or quiver in fear at the mere mentioning of the World Trade Center, I'm just tired of having to be "forced" to care.

Wojo May 5, 2006 10:53 PM

I saw this tonight and I thought it was quite good I really enjoyed it. I fealt that it didn't really push the GO AMERICA HELL YEAH agenda which was good because I know some people in here wouldnt like that. I thought it was interesting how the air traffic controllers were really disorganized and confused.

Also if anyone saw it can someone tell me what that one guy yelled? He was the guy that wanted to ask them what they wanted and not provoke them or whatever. I couldnt make out what he yelled.
