Atelier Iris 2: new trailer + various reviews

There are so many ways to create items and customize weapons, it's easy to think Iris 2 has an ocean's depth. It really doesn't. The story shepherds Felt and his intrepid group from place to place, then bounces back to Viese and more potions classes. But dammit ... everything's so crisp and workable that it's hard not to just smile and deal with all the little problems that try to bring the game down.

All that aside, though, this game clearly is among the top role-playing games I've had the pleasure of playing in a good long while.

But while it's certainly no Oblivion or Final Fantasy, Atelier Iris 2 is a charming and mostly fun adventure that will have you recalling your favorite classic role-playing games. And for that reason alone, it's a good game.

Overall, while not raising any bars, Atelier Iris: The Azoth of Destiny certainly lives up to its predecessor. It manages to keep things fresh while maintaining the feel of older RPGs, and for that, this reviewer tips his hat. It's also not as fetch-quest intensive as the first. Hat tip times two! A worthy addition to any gamer's collection.

Excellent.

How about your review?

I forgot that this was coming out soon (if it already hasn't), although I have other things to save my money for.
Would you consider it better than the first, or more of the same?
I particularly like the item creation of the first, since I spent more time doing that than being concerned with the actual story.
Is "Eternal Story" by Haruka Shimotsuki the opening for this one?
I'm mixed about the difficulty. I really liked how easy the first one was, and so I hope they kept the difficulty the same or didn't jack it ludicrously high.

I pre-ordered my copylast week and it's good to hear such postive thoughts. I loved the first one but it was a tad easy. I have yet to beat it yet but it was indeed a fun ride. The item system was insanely fun to toy around with when I wanted a break from the story but I do hope that more depth was added to make more dramatic changes to items like in Star ocean. I can't wait till this weekend to go pick it up and get that free soundtrack.

I have this preordered too. I really liked the first game, so I'm looking forward to this. I hope they have the soundtrack there. I heard the plot is a lot better this time around. Though I agree in that the item creation was the best part. I was more interested in making the chronolex than finishing the game.

I couldn't bring myself to pre-order this one after the game-stopping bug faced after defeating the last boss. The load hitching and voice skipping was also extremely annoying. As much as I liked the first game, I'd really like to know if these issues have been resolved with the second game before I spend the money on it.

According to the reviews I've read (the RPGfan one in particular makes sure to mention it), all those bugs are fixed.

I sure hope the bugs are fixed. I've been playing through the first game the last few days and I lost 45 minutes of gameplay due to the game crashing for no reason. Also, the voice acting cutting off isn't cool either. And then there's this bug I just read about with the ending of the game crashing unless you have the voices set to Japanese. I guess it's a good thing I got owned by the final boss. I'd be mighty ticked if I spent all that time fighting just to get a black screen. -___-

I been listening to the soundtrack for the Atelier Iris 2 and I like what I'm hearing so far. It even has a few tunes from the first game.

So I took the chance and picked up the game and played around with it for a bit. So far the odd load pausing in battles found in the first game is gone and there hasn't been any voice skipping problems either.

Anyway on a different tangent, how does one pronounce Atelier Iris? This came up at the game shop where I bought the game. Personally I've heard it is "Ah-Tell-Yah Eye-Ris" which I use. Anyone that happens to know French care to confirm or correct this?

Rei no Otaku Apr 27, 2006 09:28 PM

Ah-tell-ee-yay

I've been playing it inbetween Ace Combat Zero. It's been pretty good so far, haven't played too much though. AC0 is taking up all my time...

ZeroSlash Apr 27, 2006 09:36 PM

Acording to dictionary.com, it goes something like At-le-ay. I was calling it At-le-air Iris.

It's nice to know that all those bugs are fixed but it looks like it won't be able to pick it up for two more weeks after getting a copy of Culdcept and Rubrabbits.

I've been playing this latley and liking it quite a bit so far, I'm a episode 7 right now. The battle system is really fast this time around but I got used to it and am liking it now.

Atelier is french for studio, so I presume it would be At-el-yay. Basic French courses for the win? Or not. Whatever. :{
