Anime Song of the Year, maybe? >_>;

Been pondering somefin'. There is a soundtrack for sections of the boards (never touch 'em myself) and there's also an annual VGM contest in the summers (<3). But there's not one for anime themes. And there's quite an anime following here on GFF.

Has this been addressed before? o.O A large-scale collection of songs (any song from an anime, I s'pose? Vocal and BGM or just Vocal?) that get whittled down to the best tracks.

I dunno if I'd be capable or able to host/handle it, though =I I am moreso tossing the idea onto the proverbial fireplace and waiting to see if it catches fire. Anyone interested in giving it a crack, lending a hand, or shooting the idea down entirely?

Well. I doubt I'd have time to be able to host it, but I'm more than willing to help out.

We were actually supposed to have this event sometime last year (NYRSkate's idea) but it got sidetracked due to the VGM contest. After that Skate lost access to a computer, yadda yadda.

Right now the Song of the Year contest is running, after that we'll see if Skate's interested in picking up where we left off (he's gotten his computer and connection back, last I heard).

Do you guys really think that there are enough people that listen to Anime music to support such a contest? Or are we counting on random people to listen to the songs and participate?

There were quite a number of votes in the last thread, by people familiar with anime tunes.

I'd reccomend we limit this to vocal tracks, because if we don't, we'd be swamped with a lot of Kan'no/Kajiura/etc. It'd allow for more variety, and people are usually a lot more familiar with those.

Lee-chan, there are also a variety of excellent instrumental pieces that are not by popular composers. It'd really be a shame to overlook those just to avoid the popular songs. :) Besides, adding instrumental pieces would just make the contest more varied.

As for the voting, I'm pretty sure that if people are interested enough, they'll listen to the nominated tracks whether they listen to a lot of anime music or not. But then again, we have those people who avoids this forum like the plague. :p

I'd be happy to lend a hand, if any help is needed.

I'm not saying that there aren't excellent instrumentals; its just that more casual anime watchers would probably be less knowledgeble in that area. People are usually more familiar with vocal tracks since they stand out more... Of course, if the AnimeSpot is filled with dorks dorkier than I'd previously thought, then maybe we won't have a problem. =P

Ah, I remember now - last year, it was limited to OP/ED songs. That allowed for so many songs in itself. Should we do something like that?

I wouldn't mind either method. Most casual viewers may be more familiar with the vocal songs, but there are great instrumentals as well. Perhaps having two categories may work.

I'm in favor of OP/EDs mostly because they're much more limiting in terms of series people can select rather than allowing all tracks to be included. It'd certainly make the contest more accessible for most of us at least. That way, I don't have to dig through my music collection just for the nominations phase.

Last contest seemed to be fine up until the actual execution of uploading tracks and such. I'd like to start it up again or at the very least, continue where we left off.

Vocal tracks only would limit the contest nicely from one series monopolizing it all. There are some anime with incredible BGMs. They could end up possibly bloating the numbers, though. If we take vocals only (image songs, OPs, EDs), it'd keep the line-up nice and stay diverse.

But that's what I think =d

Synthesis Apr 21, 2006 02:02 PM

I agree. I think sticking to OP/ED songs is the best idea. Although, in my opinion, there are some BGM tracks from certain anime that are better than their OP/ED sequences.
