Might as well post an early nomination (for orion's sake.)

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 17, 2011 06:38 PM

That Dimahoo / GMD nom from last week got me relistening to the OST, 'cuz it's awesome. It struck me for the first time that the stage 5 theme is kind of NON. And once you connect to NON you're trapped into binging on him, you know how it goes.

So the point of that story is just that I'm shoving more NON down your chutes:
  • Album: Bucky O'Hare (Arcade Game Rip)
  • Artist: Star Hanzawa (Norio Hanzawa)
  • Track #: 5 (27 in Dubble's combined rip with the NES version)
  • Track Title: Stage 2: Planet Punk
  • Year: 1992
  • Windows Broken: 8 (per loop)
  • Source: game credits, GameFAQs

No need for explanations. You had me at "Bucky O'Hare."

Let's keep this nom train a-rollin':

Album: Jekyll & Hyde Original Game Soundtrack
Artist: Bertrand Eluerd
Track #: 1
Track Title: Dr. Jekyll
Year: 2001 (game) 2009 (album)
Source: VGMdb, Bandcamp
Notes: I never noticed until just now that the composer died six years ago. Let's have a belated memorial theme week with only music from the two games he wrote for.

Chuckster Nov 22, 2011 03:38 PM

The lesson, as always ... I'm a sucker for piano. And celtic music. And slower-moving tracks this week.

(3 points) Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy

Quick votes:

(3 points) Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy

(2 points) Legend of Gold Wind - Legend

(1 point) The Witcher 2 - Assassins of Kings Official Game Soundtrack - A Watering Hole in the Harbor

Special mentions for Operation Logic Bomb and Guitar Freaks.

Duck King Nov 26, 2011 02:28 PM

2 points: Hokuto no Ken - Fist of the North Star (Arcade Game Rip) - Lynn's Village
2 points: Legend of Gold Wind - Legend
2 points: Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
Just missed: Jeremy, CENTAUR, A Watering Hole in the Harbor

A good number of tracks this week that I could have awarded a single point to, but then again the top three deserve a 3-3-3. Sweet RBTL on Base 2, heck the whole second half is pretty neat. And Legend is the kind of baroque I can get behind.

manwesulimo2004 Nov 26, 2011 06:15 PM

Bomberman Live Battlefest - Bomberfunk I guess it's okay.

Divine Divinity - A Wind of Aleroth Very peaceful. Feels connected to nature.

Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy Great composition. Production could be better though.

GUITAR FREAKS 3rdMIX and drummania 2ndMIX soundtracks - CENTAUR Funky and bouncy. I do not like this kind of music.

Hokuto no Ken - Fist of the North Star (Arcade Game Rip) - Lynn's Village Don't see anything special about this. It's a guy with a synth trying to sound heavy or something like that.

Legend of Gold Wind - Legend Fantastic intro. I'm also a sucker for piano. The clarinet(?) coming in almost ruins the track but the violin takes it back in the right direction. When the celtic drum starts things get really interesting and I'm reminded of Riverdance.

Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2 Not terrible, but close. This style of music is not for me.

The Witcher 2 - Assassins of Kings Official Game Soundtrack - A Watering Hole in the Harbor A decent piece of music but too upbeat for my liking.

Points
Divine Divinity - A Wind of Aleroth - 2 pts.
Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy - 2 pts.
Legend of Gold Wind - Legend - 2 pts.

Muzza Nov 26, 2011 11:50 PM

mega vote string CONTINUE

3 points: Legend of Gold Wind - Legend (a simultaneously flighty and poignant masterpiece of progressive classical music)
2 points: Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
1 point: The Witcher 2 - Assassins of Kings Official Game Soundtrack - A Watering Hole in the Harbor

Really short week, huh? Lots of flash but not much substance to many of these tracks in my opinion. Base 2 was really fun though, so points to that one; and the Witcher track has pleasant shades of Mitsuda without sounding derivative. Special mention to "Jeremy", though it lacked the lasting power and oomph to warrant points. #terribleweekuntillast3tracks

By the way manwesulimo2004 make sure you stick around for the BBSCSC which starts on December 1st! :) And of course it would be great if you stuck around for Song of the Week/Fortnight/Blue Moon.

manwesulimo2004 Nov 27, 2011 12:40 PM

What's the BBSCSC?

EDIT: Ok, I think I've figured it out.

3 points: GUITAR FREAKS 3rdMIX and drummania 2ndMIX soundtracks - CENTAUR
2 points: Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
1 point: Legend of Gold Wind - Legend

I've recently come to the conclusion that Yasuyuki Suzuki may in fact be a hero of legend based on Operation Logic Bomb, Kingyo Chuuihou for the SNES, and Soldam (how did I ever dislike this soundtrack).

Well there's some Acoustic Asturias, that's guaranteed a point. Toes my schmaltz/prog line a bit closely at times, but it's still the joint.

orion_mk3 Nov 29, 2011 02:14 PM

Bomberman Live Battlefest - Bomberfunk
It's funky, retro, and melodic, which means it gets no nevermind from anybody.

Divine Divinity - A Wind of Aleroth
Really nice epic woodwind piece. Despite being a staple of RPG's from here to eternity, it's very well-done here.

Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy
Pretty piano and some acoustic guitar help make up for the fact that it's 100% ambient with no melody.

GUITAR FREAKS 3rdMIX and drummania 2ndMIX soundtracks - CENTAUR
Well-meaning loungy licks straight out of a 1970's game show that do absolutely nothing for me.

Hokuto no Ken - Fist of the North Star (Arcade Game Rip) - Lynn's Village
Your basic beat-em-up arcade music--absolutely nothing to get in the way of the SFX or visuals.

Legend of Gold Wind - Legend
Woodwinds, piano, and Melodrama Violin all having a fun, jaunty time. Little on the lengthy side though.

Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
I looked this up on Mobygames, and it seems like pretty much the best SNES game ever. Multiple dimensions, holograms, and robots? Hell yeah. On the music front...it sounds a bit Kikuta-esque, but frankly isn't doing much to keep my attention.

The Witcher 2 - Assassins of Kings Official Game Soundtrack - A Watering Hole in the Harbor
Not quite witchy enough, if somewhat witchier than I expected. It's a nice faux-medieval tune but could be so much more.

Good week all around. I smell eighth place, but it's been awhile since that happened and I'm due.

The Pointe Spreade
Bomberfunk - 3 pts.
Windy Ale Rot - 1 pt.
Jeremy Irons - 1 pt.
Legend of the Legend Legend - 1 pt.

just missed: A Watering Hole in the Harbor, Jeremy

Hey if I knew we were gonna do a faux-acoustic week I would've... not followed suit at all screw you guys

Great week. CENTAUR rocked my face off. Knew it was Weckl the second it started. I also don't think it's possible to not give Legend a point, and believe me, I tried.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 3, 2011 07:28 AM

closing on sunday for real, chop chop, etc. Don't get sucked into the BBSCSC too early!

Or, alternatively, just blast through the whole thing in one sitting like a boss. http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/im...icons/cool.gif

EDIT: Bomberfunk isn't nearly funky enough; I'm disappointed. And not nearly enough happens for it to warrant consideration of a point.

A Wind of Aleroth is nice if you like solo flute (or whatever that is) pieces ... I guess?

Jeremy hits me right stylistically. It's more mood than melody, but it's a really nice mood so it'll get at least a point for sure. (After a few listens, I now really dig this. That piano is kind of hypnotic).

I dig jazz fusion, but CENTAUR is unfortunately way too short. The sound quality's a bit lacking as well.

Lynn's Village is too "generic rock." Also a victim of poor sound quality.

I've never been a fan of the hyper-kinetic style found in Base 2.

Legend isn't quite the "baroque" I was hoping for, but it's more interesting that most of what's on tap this week.

A Watering Hole in the Harbor is my nom. I admit I don't love it or anything; it's kind of insubstantial. But it's pretty pleasing to the ears and has an easy-going Celtic feel that I like. The acoustic section at 1:20 is particularly nice.

3 pts. - Jeremy
2 pts. - A Watering Hole in the Harbor
1 pt. - Legend
Close - CENTAUR

I'm not gonna nominate anything right now, 'cause if I did I'd probably just be mining a game I've nominated from multiple times in the past. I should be listening to a bunch of new vgm soon though, thanks to the recent Indie VGM Bundle. Hopefully I'll find some stuff to nominate in there.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 5, 2011 05:19 AM

Oh, well I guess it's kind of difficult to have a next week with only four nominations.

Anyone who doesn't want me to fill the remaining slots with Super Sonic Racing is advised to nominate something.

We do have manwesulimo2004's other nomination from his three-fer, which was from Terranigma. If you use your Super Mod Powers to lean on the Dragon Twins, Drakken and Draconis, that brings us to at least seven.

Elorin Dec 6, 2011 05:22 AM

Er, would music from Child of Eden be eligible? I realise the music from the game is based on remixes of songs done by Genki Rockets, a virtual band formed by video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi of Rez fame. The band's first single, Heavenly Star, was used in No More Heroes before a commercial CD album was released.

The track I'm thinking of nominating is based on two previously released remixes of a song from Genki Rocket's first album but rearranged, though not a great deal, for the game. It's also just over 10min long.

The Genki Rockets album is listed on VGMdb (AVCD-23448 | Genki Rockets I -Heavenly Star- - VGMdb) and the composer for the track I'd like to nominate is Yusuke Tanaka, who has apparently composed for the Idolmaster games (Yusuke Tanaka - VGMdb).

In any case, here's another nomination:

* Album Title: Attack Rate
* Artist: Ryu Takami
* Track Title: Real Life
* Source: RISQ-0001 | Attack Rate - VGMdb
* File Location: Nominations folder
* Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
* Track Number: 15
* Catalogue Number: RISQ-0001
* Year: 2007

3 Points - GUITAR FREAKS 3rdMIX and drummania 2ndMIX soundtracks - CENTAUR
2 Points - Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
1 Point - Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy

the 1 point could have gone to many different things, I sort of picked it at near random, but I know for sure that the top two favorites of mine of those were definitelyJIMMY WECKL IS COOL and Base 2 by a significantly far-ish margin !

Normally I would make silly either long winded or short quick posts saying what I thought of all of them but:

I made this post quite late, but I hope that is acceptable ! !!

Maybe I should nominate something !

Just found out about a wonderfully retro iOS game soundtrack, so here's a nom!

Album: Super Stick Golf: Original Soundtrack
Artist: Whitaker Blackall
Track Title: Cloud City
Track #: 9
Source: Bandcamp, VGMDB
Year: 2011 (game apparently came out in 2010)
Comments: It was hard to decide which track to nominate. I immediately wanted to go with "Funkier Town" due to my funk bias, then was gonna nominate "Mars" for its more ambitious build-up and longer running time, but decided to go with something fun that I think better represents the soundtrack.

Will upload shortly. Just realized I have no FTP client on my computer. (Yikes! Guess it's been almost a year and a half since I regularly nominated stuff? Or at least stuff that needed to be uploaded.)

EDIT: Switch from Mars to Cloud City.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 12, 2011 05:17 AM

Jolt did you pick up a speedball habit since the last time you were around here.

Also Elorin, if they're not really rearranged from the original remixes apart from being combined into one, I would think probably not. (Also those Idolmaster credits for Yusuke Tanaka are for covers by someone else of an anime song he wrote. He didn't write anything for the games as far as I know.)

Also also I guess that's eight, huh. Guess you lucked out this time. This time.

1). [17] Legend of Gold Wind - Legend
2). [15] Granado Espada Renaissance ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK Vol.3 - Jeremy
3). [10] Operation Logic Bomb (Game Rip) - Base 2
4). [9] GUITAR FREAKS 3rdMIX and drummania 2ndMIX soundtracks - CENTAUR
5-t). [5/4] Divine Divinity - A Wind of Aleroth
5-t). [5/4] The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Official Game Soundtrack - A Watering Hole in the Harbor
7). [3] Bomberman Live Battlefest - Bomberfunk
8). [2] Hokuto no Ken: Fist of the North Star (Arcade Game Rip) - Lynn's Village
