Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement In a contest of movie and concert minimalists, I'll take Philip Glass over Michael Nyman any day of the week and twice on Sundays (why hasn't Glass scored any games?). The cell-based structure of the music is interesting, but the Melodrama Strings take a really long time to do anything that matches it. Still, not without its moments.

Madballs in... Babo - Invasion (Game Rip) - Desert 3 With a name like that...I was expecting something off-the-wall zany. Instead, it sounds like an Alex Brandon imitator. A pleasant surprise, to be sure, but the tracker style on display here lacks Brandon's chaops, though not for want of trying (and it's still fairly decent).

Penny Racers (PSX Game Rip) - Lake Circuit Actually a really nice racer track, with all the neccessary sense of movement without sacrificing melody or getting too repetitive. I still have no idea what a Penny Racer is, but that's okay.

PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION - Sound Collection I - The Ground Phantasy Star has in many ways lacked the cohesive feel of many big RPG franchises (especially if you compare the Online games to the Not-Online ones) but there have still been some good tracks. I really like the synths and piano runs here, the melody's not half bad either and the way additional layers are added in as the track evolves is pretty cool.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Original Soundtrack Wings of Universe - Hunt up Two Phantasy Star noms in one week? Maybe the other six of us should just have acceded to a theme week. This sounds a lot more sci-fi than Ground, but it's also a lot less impressive in terms of melody and structure. Still a decent ambient listen though.

Raskulls Original Soundtrack - Big Bone Boogaloo - World 1 Music 3 One for the BSC, one for here. Synths, melody, and humble Bandcamp origins--the tune has it all. Get the whole thing here and maybe throw the creators a bone.

Shantae - Risky's Revenge Original Soundtrack - She's Got Moves I seem to remember a Shantae nom in the Best Chiptune Contest in the halcyon days before the Great Crashes of '06, but those papyri are now lost to the desert sands. I do remember it being good, though, which this also is. I was reminded, in a good way, of Needle Man's stage music from MM3.

Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest Nice synths and nice beats with a decent melody and apparently enough name recognition to make people tremble.

This is the best week ever. Seriously, I dowloaded every track, which I *never* do.

The Point Spread
W1M3 - 2pts.
Lake Circuit - 1 pt.
The Ground - 1 pt.
She's Got Moves - 1 pt.
Vote Harvest - 1 pt.

A lot of tracks were good this week. Had a difficult time picking a #3. At the same time, half of these tracks I had already heard and had in iTunes already (including all the ones I voted for =P).

3pts - Phantasy Star Portable 2 Original Soundtrack Wings of Universe - Hunt up
2pts - Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest
1 pt - Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement

Not superb by any measure, but not bad either.

<<3 Points>> Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest
<<2 Points>> Raskulls Original Soundtrack - Big Bone Boogaloo - World 1 Music 3
<<1 Point>> PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION - Sound Collection I - The Ground

Muzza Jun 6, 2011 08:08 PM

@ orion: yes, that is the correct de blob track to nom, good choice

I thought I'd end up hating them, though I really loved the strings in Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement. The tone is one of triumph and melancholia, and while there's no distinct or poignant melody to speak of, the piece doesn't really need one to be effective.

Madballs in... Babo - Invasion (Game Rip) - Desert 3 is for the most part average desert BGM stuff at least in terms of atmosphere, though to its credit it doesn't rely on sitars to convey the setting. Indeed while it's a tad on the boring side for me, 1:20 is a great development and the track deserves props for being unique.

!!!!! i just nostalgia'd. Penny Racers (PSX Game Rip) - Lake Circuit turns a distant switch on somewhere in my brain. I love the energy, which sometimes manifests itself as cheese; I can't help but feel an attachment and attraction to this one. <3

Every time I listen to a Phantasy Star track in SotF or BSC I always tell myself to look more into the series' discography, but I never do. I really should now, because PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION - Sound Collection I - The Ground is really nice. It's got a nice 'morning glow' kind of feel to it. I could have done without randomguitar, but I guess it works in the context of the composition.

The neo-Phantasy Star isn't as good, for once. Phantasy Star Portable 2 Original Soundtrack Wings of Universe - Hunt up goes for an epic sound rather than a heroic one, and ultimately lacks substance. There are some neat builds (2:04), but they're not neat enough to make the track shine. It's OK, but it's also static.

I've just purchased this soundtrack for a couple of bucks because <3. If Raskulls Original Soundtrack - Big Bone Boogaloo - World 1 Music 3 is anything to go by, this composer has the old-school peppiness down pat. Tracks like this which combine the retro and futuristic are usually tops in my book.

I'm actually not a huge fan of virt's score to the Shantae sequel and prefer his score to the original GBC game. :( Even Shantae - Risky's Revenge Original Soundtrack - She's Got Moves, which is one of the most accessible and distinctive tracks on the score, lacks for me the melodic strength which was emphasised so well on the original chiptune soundtrack.

Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest is the sexiest piece of music I've ever heard. It's one of my favourites, and it's a shame it got bundled out so early in the BSC last year. Mind-bogglingly entertaining and addictive from start to finish. and 2:47 oh my godddddd <3

sexy POINT nostalgia, yeahh

2 points: Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest
1 point: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION - Sound Collection I - The Ground
1 point: Raskulls Original Soundtrack - Big Bone Boogaloo - World 1 Music 3
1 point: Penny Racers (PSX Game Rip) - Lake Circuit
1 point: Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement
6th: Madballs in... Babo - Invasion (Game Rip) - Desert 3
7th: Shantae - Risky's Revenge Original Soundtrack - She's Got Moves
8th: Phantasy Star Portable 2 Original Soundtrack Wings of Universe - Hunt up

Coming into this week I thought for sure I'd be giving "Kinetic Harvest" 3 points, but wow, this week is really good. Still not satisfied with the point spread.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 12, 2011 03:40 AM

Oh yeah, this thing's still happening, isn't it?

3 points: Shantae - Risky's Revenge Original Soundtrack - She's Got Moves
1 point: Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement
1 point: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION - Sound Collection I - The Ground
1 point: Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest

She's Got Moves admittedly isn't super strong in the melody department, aside from the fabulous '80s dancefloor hook that comes out of nowhere, but it makes up for that with rhythmic infectiousness. Undeniably groovy.

Kinetic Harvest is a Shatter track I can actually get behind.

I have heard the Phantasy Star III overworld theme far too many times to not give this arrangement any points.

Elorin Jun 14, 2011 07:25 PM

Thought I should vote before I forget. So many good tracks this week but only 6 points to distribute!

(2 points) Enemy Zero Original Soundtrack - The Last Movement
Really like how it straddles between the triumphant and the wistful.

(2 points) Madballs in... Babo - Invasion (Game Rip) - Desert 3
Great desert theme that progresses very nicely.

(1 point) Phantasy Star Portable 2 Original Soundtrack Wings of Universe - Hunt up
Would have liked a bit more variation but still a great listen.

(1 point) Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack - Kinetic Harvest
The intro was ok but the rest of the track was very cool.

Just Missed: Hunt Up, The Ground

What on earth is Madballs in... Babo - Invasion and why do I like it's music so much.

WHAT at that guitar solo in The Ground. That may actually be my favorite part of the track.

-----

Got a nomination for next week, whenever it may happen:

Game: Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo ~ Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu (New Mystery of the Emblem ~ Heroes of Light and Shadow)
Composers: Yuka Tsujiyoko, Hiroki Morishita, Takeru Kanazaki, Shoh Murakami
Track: One who Carves a New History
Track #: 10 on Serenes Forest rip
Catalog #: n/a
Year: 2010
Source: New Mystery of the Emblem, New Mystery of the Emblem
Additional info: Haven't done too much research on this, but I do know this is an original track and not an arrangement from the original Mystery of the Emblem (or any other FE). No clue on composer breakdown.

Also DC72 nominates generic RPG music :gonk:

Why? I think it should be part of the template from now on.

I can't believe none of us noticed that for like three weeks.

Chuckster Jun 21, 2011 08:16 AM

I was going to vote on this today, but considering I've been away for two weeks and have a (very) sizable backlog of BSC songs to listen to, so be it.

orion_mk3 Jun 23, 2011 01:52 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention: I'm at a conference, so ability to create new voting thread = nil, at least until Tuesday.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 23, 2011 10:42 PM

Well, even if you were just slacking and hadn't vanished to attend a meeting of whatever shadow organization it is you're part of, I still meant to get the thread up yesterday. Sooooooooooooooooooo, working on it right now.
