Yoa, haven't been here for a while, thought i'd nominate something.

Album/Game Title: Shatter - Official Videogame Soundtrack
Artist: Module
Track Title: Kinetic Harvest
Year: 2009
Source: vgmdb

Don't know about its popularity, also thought about nominating something from Super Meat Boy, which might also be problematic, if not maybe some other week...

Fewer noms means lower standards. Frankly, I'd allow just about anything that isn't from a numbered Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, or Zelda at this point.

To make up for the late nom, here's a new one.

Kinetic Harvest was in last year's BSC, but it didn't make it past the first round. If that affects anyone's decision. (I would've taken it over The Amethyst Caverns any day of the week but that's me.)

I'm fine with Super Meat Boy, but it's gotten a few noms in this year's BSC, so I'd prefer those tracks be avoided.

Also here's a thing for people who listen to music:

I for one am aware of that, the BSC starting again and the fact that it did this badly last year prompted me to nominate it now; i also saw the SMB nominations this year and i would not nominate any of those tracks anyway.

Opfer May 18, 2011 07:31 AM

It's quite a shame Kinetic Harvest was pitted against a VVVVVV track in the first round back then, I'm curious how it will do in SotW.

Votes:

3 Points: Radiant Historia Original Soundtrack - Mechanical Kingdom
Nicely flowing, melodic, relaxing tune. Personally, I could have done without the violin, but as a whole, this one just clicks.

2 Points: Freelancer Original Soundtrack - Bretonia Space Suite
This is the set of background music pieces that play in the Bretonia systems. In the game, the music changes dynamically according to the current situation of the player.
0:00 - 2:00 Ambience: Really nice, moody stuff, I love listening to this at night :)
2:00 - 3:02 Danger: Basically just a transition to lead into battle theme
3:02 - 4:11 Battle: Really energetic battle music with emphasis on percussion, great for listening while driving your car at high speed :)

1 Point: High-Tension Princess Comedy Special Disc Set HIMEHAJIME BOX - A Princess, Running
The melody is a little cheesy, but still nice and catchy.

I see you don't normalize the tracks anymore, or maybe only when they're actually posted? In any case, I just wanted to say that the Bretonia Space Suite track is normalized to 83 db, so it's really quiet compared to the other tracks. If you want me to upload a louder version at any point, just give me a yell.

More nominations (shamelessly copied Stalky's nomination info from week 192, blame him if it's not correct):

Game Title: Madballs in... Babo: Invasion (PC Game Rip)
Artist: Greg Drover
Track Title: Desert 3
Year: 2009
Source: Madballs in Babo: Invasion - an interview with Scott Simpson, Playbrains President and CEO - San Francisco SF Gaming Lifestyle | Examiner.com, In-game credits & game files

Hey Stalky, can you upload your looped and not-super-quiet version of the thing? That would save me some work.

CHz might, but I don't. The debacle a few years ago put me off ever attempting it anywhere, ever. If you want to upload a louder version, I'll put the original in the Extras folder.

Huh, what debacle do you mean? I've had a pretty good experience with this stuff so far.

And I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a louder version, considering how ambient the first half is. I've uploaded the new one to the FTP. And I guess there's no reason to keep the quiet version, since there is nothing original about it, I just normalized it to 83 db so it would fit into my library. I'll try and make sure things are at the right volume for future nominations ;).

I ran a musical contest and normalized files first to silence and then to near inaudibility without making spare copies of the source files. It sucked. Now, let us speak no more of it, forever.

Enduro Racer (Arcade Game Rip) - Main Theme A nicely upbeat and competent racer track. Two complaints: it wasn't in Racing in Circles, where it might have placed in a weak field, and there's a bit too much filler (all the repetition between the opening and the enjoyable breakdown at the 50% mark).

Freelancer Original Soundtrack - Bretonia Space Suite I've only ever heard the bits of Freelancer that were composed by my man James Hannigan, which may have influenced my expectations a little bit. I have to say, as someone who appriciates a good bit of electronic ambience at times, it wasn't my cup of tea. I think a stronger melody over the admittedly impressive sound design would really have helped.

Gemini Rue - Bonus - Credits Who's have thought an obscure game and an unknown composer could produce a truly great piece of film noir music on par with Jerry Goldsmith's "Chinatown?" But here we are. I could listen to that mournful solo trumpet and accompanying piano all day, preferably while pounding the bricks trying to solve a murder or lounging in a smoky jazz club with a femme fatale. Another great Bandcamp (well, CDBaby) find; please support the artist if you can (and check out the next track on the album for a kickass Vangelis style remix of this song).

High-Tension Princess Comedy Special Disc Set HIMEHAJIME BOX - A Princess, Running An enjoyable bouncy but heniously repetitive bit of Asian-influenced cutesypop.

Music Contest 4 (The Hornet Archive) - Universe Electric Alex Brandon is always good in a pinch, and I'd stack his best work up against any other composer anywhere ever. This isn't his best work, though: the tracker rhythm is, predictably, kicass, but there's virtually none of that trademark Brandon synth melody to go along with it. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Ninja Blade Original Soundtrack - Searching Ye gods. Sorry, Darkcomet, but this is just unlistenable for me: a sparse and repetitious piano overlaid with every annoying atmospheric sound effect known to man. Nominate one of the album versions of "Beanstalk," though, and we'll talk.

Radiant Historia Original Soundtrack - Mechanical Kingdom Ms. Shimomura is also good in a pinch, and has been awfully busy of late (Radiant Historia, Last Ranker, Birth by Sleep, plus special guest appearances in Xenoblade and 3rd Birthday). I'd have put forth To the Future that Waits Ahead, Dreams Showered by a Cloud of Dust, or Affectionate Moment from this OST myself, but this gets the job done.

Suiheisen Made Nan Mile? Sound Track - Where the Sun Shines Very sunny and funny indeed, even if that question mark makes the MP3 tag shit itself unless I percent encode the hell out of it.

The Point Spread
Credits - 3 pts.
Where the Sun Don't Shine - 2 pts.

Anyway I've adjusted all of the files now.

Super big thanks to orion for covering for me in a pinch while I tended to an emergency at my sinister underwater volcano moon base.

I recommend the simplest solution to this problem: just leave the question mark out of the filename!

Pretty nifty week.

(2 points) Gemini Rue Original Soundtrack - Bonus - Credits
Getting vibes of detectives poring over case files in musty, sepia-tinged offices. Nice.

(2 points) Music Contest 4 (The Hornet Archive) - Universe Electric
Way too cool to pass up.

(2 points) Radiant Historia Original Soundtrack - Mechanical Kingdom
Wonderfully unassuming track that builds-up nicely.

Special mention to Freelancer. I quite enjoyed the track.

I hope you folks in the U.S. are having an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend (which you should be using to vote).

3 points: Suiheisen Made Nan Mile? Sound Track - Where the Sun Shines
1 point: Enduro Racer (Arcade Game Rip) - Main Theme
1 point: Gemini Rue Original Soundtrack - Bonus - Credits
1 point: Ninja Blade Original Soundtrack - Searching
and this is rad: Music Contest 4 (The Hornet Archive) - Universe Electric

The drum loop in Where the Sun Shines gets old (Yack I know you can write better percussion than this), but man that melody is so happy and of course Yack is a fifth-dimensional being so we get things like that middle section.

Searching is neat.

The final minute of Bretonia Space Suite was actually really good.

Above-average week.

wtf was that Enduro Racer track composed by 6 people simultaneously or something? How can a piece be this terrible and awesome at the same time without being a joke?

Yack I've been neglecting you for too long :(

Nomination... if this week is still open, maybe.

"Universe Electric" is wonderful, and I hope it wins this week. I'm willing to say it's leagues above my nomination. Also thumbs up to "Searching" for scaring the crap out of me; gotta love it.

I should rekindle my love affair with Yack one of these days huh

THE POWER OF WATER May 31, 2011 05:29 AM

Haha, it looks like the Freelancer track didn't do all that well. ;)

I guess I'm gonna have to nominate something more melodic from that one next time.

So close :(

At least my Bandcamp project seems to be a success so far!
