Star Wars Empire at War

Anybody picked this up or tried it out yet. I have been tempted on my last couple of trips to the store to get this. Just haven't been williing to part with the cash yet. Maybe I will pick it up tomorrow on payday.

This game is great. It breathes new life into the RTS genre with it's new gameplay methods, and there are actually tactics involved in an RTS for once. Plus the MP is fun as hell.

It's a great game, basically you take a side, build up and etc.

Over time the enemy will attack, take over planets and etc.

You get limited resources and etc. So if you aren't wise, overtime you will get your ass kicked.

I tried playing it, got passed the tutorials, got passed the first few missions... then went "fuck it, I dont have time for this" and uninstalled it.

Casaubon Mar 3, 2006 12:50 AM

I didn't think it was that great, I mean wasn't this hyped up to revolutionize the RTS genre. It doesn't even feel RTS-y unless you are in a battle which is pretty standard fare. I was gonna actually pick this up but the demo completly turned me off from it.

sabbey Mar 3, 2006 12:55 AM

I plan on buying the game, but probably won't be doing so until it's less than $30. Too many others I didn't buy in the last year still to get...

Zio Mar 3, 2006 01:39 AM

Yeah, my mom bought it, I was just going to wait to buy it once the price drops like usual. I think it's a good game though. :)

But the best Star Wars games were the old school Tie Fighter games. ;)

Echolyn Mar 3, 2006 07:58 PM

Amen, one of the best space sims too.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed by this game it's like Casaubon it's all so standard and even then it's also soo simple. It hasn't a lot of options. Maybe i was expecting a little too much, since i thought this was going to be like a 4X Star Wars game done right, but I found myself soon bored by this game. :(

Coming from a huge fan of RTS games, I played the demo, and was also bored to death by it.

It seems like most new RTS games these days have too many special effects and guys moving around, that you lose track of exactly what's going on in battle. Unit movement is also usually very awkward compared to games like WarCraft 3, and even C&C RA2/Generals.

Age of Empires 3 did the job alright, but the game hardly changed at all.

Breakable Mar 5, 2006 07:13 AM

Well, Im playing the game now too and I have to admit, it seriously lacks something.
Its complete standard fare. Sure, you can fight in space, and all that, but other than that, it just isnt "interesting". Also, the textures look like crap if put on anything but the highest, which seriously kills my enjoyement. I want a Stormtrooper to LOOK like one. And is it me or does Darth Vaders voice suck?

Shoops Mar 5, 2006 10:02 AM

I tried empire at war, i didnt' find that great, easy game, easily boring, not very tactical!

Cyrus XIII Mar 5, 2006 01:52 PM

I'm a couple of hours into it and quite impressed. Graphics are nice but not too distracting, sound and music are just what we came to expect from a SW game and as for the content, I was amazed how much stuff there was, I never encountered in an RTS before (though I must admit, I've not really kept up, WC3 was my last). At the moment, the whole planet/orbit/surface management seems to be something that'll make the game a lot of fun.

Grawl Mar 5, 2006 02:16 PM

This game is pretty fun. It's certainly more interesting than most RTS games, and the planet/spaceship/groundfights are fun too.

Those are my complaints in a nutshell about this game. It's a shame, because the trailer for this game left me very optimistic. Alas, another mediocre Star Wars title.

Stealth Mar 5, 2006 04:29 PM

Not very tactical? Were you people playing the same game?

Breakable Mar 9, 2006 06:25 AM

Wellp...
Sorry, but the ground level fights just suck.
The graphic is ugly like hell. The Maps and missions are pretty much identical (kill every rebel / kill everyone else). The only fun fights are the space fights.
And its great having a few real stardestroyers under your control.

On the ground fights only the AT-AT are somewhat fun to move around, and only the hero AT-AT has a good power.

It is a mediocre game, imho.

shining_force Mar 9, 2006 04:49 PM

my only complaint about the space battles is the population cap or whatever you want to call it that makes it so you can only fight with 5 star destroyers at a time. You can't fight those immense epic battles that were in the movies.

The Wise Vivi Mar 9, 2006 10:55 PM

Its a great game. I truly enjoy the cinematic cut stuff you can do while everything is moving around. I enjoy the space battles more than that land battles though.

The graphics are great, the sound is awesome, and they did a great job putting it all together.

It isn't tactical at all... IGN explains this very well. It's only fun for a few days max.
