Quick question: Is Dawn Metropolis a legitimate nom? On Wiki it says that Anamanaguchi is a chiptune band -- and it looks to me that Dawn Metropolis is an album, not a soundtrack from a game. Doesn't that disqualify them?

Aion (Game Rip) - Shugo Quirky fun. What's not to love? Cyberwar - Entity Nice atmosphere, phat beats, but not even the faintest whiff of a melody which makes for a long slog. Dawn Metropolis - Blackout City I was disappointed by the work Amanohootchiecootchie did on the Scott Pilgrim game, which nailed the sound but not the melodic catchiness of classic chiptunes. This is in the same category; the melody doesn't have much bite and that's ultimately what makes a good chiptune stand out above a decent counterfeit (see also Mega Men 9-10). DecapAttack (Game Rip) - Level 7 Being on the other side of the Console Wars, I'm always glad when someone brings out a Genesis nom. Broaden your horizons and junk. This doesn't break any new ground in platformer action music, but runs thru the motions pretty well. Gran Turismo Original Sound Collection - Yummy Trip Laid-back grungy surf-music. Typical for the genre, I guess, but doesn't do much for me at all. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (SNES Game Rip) - Ninja Training Michael Giacchino's come a long was from this to Oscar gold. Nails the ninja aspect and gets a fair amount of mileage from the SNES soundchip, but never really transcended that. Rockman Strategy (Game Rip) - Track 5 There's a "Rockman Strategy?" I would so play that if it meant tactical gaming with the original Robot Master crew. It's an oddly soothing piece that goes off in a totally different direction from the music I'm used to, but not necessarily in a bad way. Xardion (Game Rip) - Oceansphere Surface I generally like Kohei Tanaka, despite people's attempts to add unnecessary vowels to his name, but this just didn't do much for me. The Point Spread Shugo - 3 pts. Track 5 - 2 pts. Level 7 - 1 pt. Nom Composer: Yoko Shimomura Album: Xenoblade Track Title: Colony 9 Disc Number: 3 Track Number: 3 Release Date: Jun 23, 2010 Catalog Number: DERP-10008~11 (heh, derp!) |
(3 points) Dawn Metropolis - Blackout City: I think Orion's right in one sense; it lacks the raging strong melody that defined chip tunes of that era. But looking at it from the viewpoint of a band dipping into chiptuneage, it turns up some strong sounds and makes this a worthwhile choice. Maybe it's a flaky choice for this week given what it is and how it got in, but it did get in and it's the best tune, so my choice is made.
(2 points) Rockman Strategy (Game Rip) - Track 5: Very laid back for Rockman, but strong nonetheless. (1 point) Gran Turismo Original Sound Collection - Yummy Trip: Okay, a tad cliched, but smooth as well. |
3 points - DecapAttack (Game Rip) - Level 7
2 points - Rockman Strategy (Game Rip) - Track 5 1 point - Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (SNES Game Rip) - Ninja Training Didn't really find much this week to be that interesting. |
Here's a new nomination. Looking at the game now, I'm reminded how technology has advanced in so many ways for mass market video games.

3 points: Xardion (Game Rip) - Oceansphere Surface
1 point: Aion (Game Rip) - Shugo 1 point: Cyberwar - Entity 1 point: Dawn Metropolis - Blackout City |
Aion (Game Rip) - Shugo has a playful Halloween vibe that's easy to enjoy, particularly given the time of the year. No single element impresses me and brings me back for more, but it's accomplished and wholly palatable.
The clicks and beats make Cyberwar - Entity a breezy package that never really outstays its welcome. Nondescript for the most part, but it's definitely the kind of music for which I have a certain penchant! Anamanaguchi is a great 8-bit artist and has a knack for up-tempo shots of action & melody (Scott Pilgrim soundtrack is sex IMO). Dawn Metropolis - Blackout City is a neat representation of their sound, and has a couple of kickass hooks to boot. Music that makes you smile. :) DecapAttack (Game Rip) - Level 7 is OK. It doesn't excel, nor does it really falter. DRUMS @ 2:00 made me laugh though, great stuff. I get strong Gitarooman vibes from Gran Turismo Original Sound Collection - Yummy Trip. To me it has a classic, authentic and immediately engaging melody, coupled with a smooth and cool atmosphere. Very, very cool; Solaya wears the coolest shades I bet. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (SNES Game Rip) - Ninja Training has an air of class in its understated tribal minimalism. Some impressive composer names only enhance the appeal. Rockman Strategy (Game Rip) - Track 5 doesn't do anything for me, I'm afraid. Peculiar quasi-orchestral stuff. =/ Kouhei Tanaka! <3 Xardion (Game Rip) - Oceansphere Surface is solid: mysterious, aquatic and spooky all in one. I have no problems with this. POINT or treat 2 points: Gran Turismo Original Sound Collection - Yummy Trip 2 points: Cyberwar - Entity 2 point: Dawn Metropolis - Blackout City 4th: Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (SNES Game Rip) - Ninja Training 5th: Xardion (Game Rip) - Oceansphere Surface 6th: Aion (Game Rip) - Shugo 7th: DecapAttack (Game Rip) - Level 7 8th: Rockman Strategy (Game Rip) - Track 5 Great week! So it turns out that I'm blind and misread Muzza's 2-2-2 point spread as a 3-2-1. This flips the top two tracks, making Blackout City the real winner. Unfortunately, I can't blame this foul-up on orion too. :(
ikkei can thank Draconis for noticing this and pushing his track into the top spot. Muzza, contrarily, can curse Draconis with a rage hotter than five thousand stars. |
:eagletear: No worries, I like "Blackout City" a good deal (as shown by my even point spread) and am happy having it as the winner. :)
|
Hey thx Draco, I didn't have a winner since Week 174! This was getting a little depressing :P
