General Art thread 2010OCT

General art thread, post your stuff, show off, get comments, or critique if you want. Or just talk about random things going on in the artwork/industry lately.

Random stuff, related to my other project, can't get the image out of my head when listening to 2 step from hell, courage of heart.

So, what's been going on lately?

VitaminZinc Sep 30, 2010 05:57 AM

Sketched this.

realized it looked a lot like

and now I probably won't finish it beyond the slapdash coloring.

Feels bad, man.

Although I may just finish it for the hell of it now. I haven't drawn anything in so long. My tablet's been so... lonely...

Magi Sep 30, 2010 12:36 PM

Nah, its not the same, its just a typical power usage pose for that character. Don't think too deep into it. :p

Edit:

For the sake of consistency, I have created a shading modeling sheet for my characters.

They ain't got no legs! Sweet Jesusu!

And I actually might go back to the Emma Frost picture once I finish off this one I'm working on of Blink. ...Hopefully I'll have a WIP to post later tonight.

Magi Sep 30, 2010 09:46 PM

Zinc: You seen to draw her a lot, do you like the character? :p Special place in you heart? lol

Devo: Whoa, lovely stuff. It something like that that goes a long way in creating immersion in an environment. :3 Details can't be missed.

Two works in progress.

My most recent work--I'm kinda stuck on this one; I'm not really happy with how the hair is turning out. Maybe it's because I half-assed the lines on it but it's not really turning out the way I want to. =\ Plus like it's hard to get accustomed to the tablet thingee when I've been coloring with mouse for so long.

My other doodle--this one's been on hold for about 6 months lol.

Yup. Even named my NE rogue in WoW "Blink". Cause hey, she looks like a NE. It works. =P

No idea why I'm on such a kick for drawing Marvel characters, though. Emma, and now Blink.

Magi Oct 1, 2010 02:57 AM

Shorty: So far so good, you got tablet fairly recently? How do you like it? You don't have to be so formal about just drawing. Its probably and good idea sometimes just to doodle ideas and not trying to make perfect. :p

Zinc: Blink? A character I don't know. :o From marvel right? I was mainly referring to Emma, I seen you drawn her a lot.

Some random thing for +4c

Nah, that's actually the first time I've drawn Emma.

I've drawn Blink a ton, though. Here's the newest one I'm doing.

Ah... I see. I seen to confuse you with vemp sometimes for some reason.

VitaminZinc Oct 1, 2010 10:38 PM

Our names do start with 'V', I guess.

Here's the finished thing.

Rough idea that basically started as a joke. I call it "Tank City". Kind of based off the SDF stuff from Macross, but on a tank. ...and it doesn't and won't transform.

This is just a rough. I spent a decent amount of time on the wheels/treads before I decided to just block most of it in and change it as I go.

Magi Oct 7, 2010 02:43 AM

How interesting. :p I wonder what life would be like in such a city. Maybe you can make a series of image to that effect as a sort of portfolio pieces maybe? Its difficult to get a sense of the actual scale of something like that.

Recent stuff, just sort of personal interest kind of thing.

I really like that Starfire picture.

She usually shows more skin than that, though. =P

Heh, I know, especially the original comic version. I wanted to draw more stuff on the character to increase some of their design complexity. To give people some more things to look at other then breasts, I guess? I don't know. Just thought it would be an interesting things to try and design.

I love drawing robots, but every time I draw them I feel like I am going to kill myself. >w<;

Stance on that one's a little odd. Something with the torso, maybe? Plus, I get the idea at first glance that the head doesn't belong on that. She needs like, a helmet or something to tie it together.

Anyway, went back to Emma Frost. Changed up the angle a little. Shoes look like crap, but feh... I'll color it tonight, probably. Going to bed. Blargh.

Finished, or at least as far as I'm going with it. Shading's not 100% perfect, but I got tired of messing with it since it's at a kinda weird-ish angle to me. I dunno. NEXT PROJECTU!

Magi Oct 16, 2010 02:47 AM

Originally I had a response all typed out, but it got eaten for some reason.

Anyway, that is a difficult perspective to draw. Its surprising how little of the body is showing when view on high angles, so sometimes its hard to balance what you wanted to show and keeping the perspective consistent. Recommended looking for additional references.

As for shading, next time, maybe you can try adding darker core shadow to what you already have at this step, just as an experiment, to see if you like the way it looks, or its too dark for your taste.

Recent stuff: so lol random

Thanks for the critique/comment. I was actually trying for a deeper shadowing, but for some reason it never quite looked right. This may sound kind of dumb, but is there a certain formula on picking a shadow color? I seem to take forever to find just the right shade, and even then it's usually not quite what I was looking for.

For example, I had a hell of a time finding a shadow color for blonde without making it look wrong (to me, anyway). I guess practice/experimenting is the obvious answer, but I figured I'd throw the question out there in case there's an easier way.
